If you're a Radio 4 native but can't stand the current Today presenters ...

... have you found an alternative breakfast news programme that you prefer?

I grew up with the Today programme on in the kitchen every school day morning and have woken up to it almost every working day of my adult life. But I don't like the current presenters and now get frustrated listening to it. Where do I go from here?

Indeed. Far too young.

I used to like Jenni Murray. It's sad that she's died.

Loved Jenni Murray, sad she's gone.

That's a real shame about Jenni Murray.

The female presenters seem to be too focused on proving themselves. Emma Barnett for good reason: she lacks the knowledge and skills to do the job and deflects from her professional inadequacies with identity /gender victimhood. Anna foster is completely wrapped up in the 'excitement' of news reporting and the fact that she works for the bbc(!!). The men all seem to be more comfortable with themselves and less ego-driven (aside from AR). Why can't the Today programme just deliver the news by competent, well-informed journalists. I'm all for women being in the mix but less of the navel-gazing, instagram gang, please!

NorWouldTilly · 28/03/2026 09:15

Wasn’t it Anna Foster reporting from a war zone a few days ago?

And to say the male presenters seem less ego driven … 🤨🤨🤨

Words fail me.

zurigo · 28/03/2026 09:36

I wouldn't say the women presenters are ego-driven! Today has had some great female presenters over the years who I've really enjoyed listening to, like Sarah Montague, Martha Kearney and Mishal Hussein. I don't dislike Anna Foster, although I find her breathless, excited war-zone reporting style a bit much at 8am. The ones I like are the calm presenters (of either sex).

breathless, excited war-zone reporting style
I hear 'warm and empathetic'. She really seems to think about the people, the huddled masses behind the headlines.

Bendybody · 28/03/2026 12:50

I was referring to the two current incombants : EB and AF. EB is ego on legs. Totally agree with the 'breathless, excited war-zone reporting style' description abt AF. JW is by far my preferred presenter. He's calm, personable and knows his stuff. If the rumours are true that EB is soon to leave(please let it be true!), I hope they'll replace her with Dharshini David.

FatRosie · 28/03/2026 13:03

Words fail me. Same here.
I have warmed to EB (apart from talking over interviewees) and have no complaints about AF, she's been working for the Beeb for years.
My complaint is more to do with the non-news content.

And to say the male presenters seem less ego driven …
I think most people who are prominent tend to have matching egos.
