If you're a Radio 4 native but can't stand the current Today presenters ...

... have you found an alternative breakfast news programme that you prefer?

I grew up with the Today programme on in the kitchen every school day morning and have woken up to it almost every working day of my adult life. But I don't like the current presenters and now get frustrated listening to it. Where do I go from here?

Glad it’s not just me who can’t stand the Viking cruise ads! How on earth did they ever come to pick that woman?

And I forget whether it’s for the same cruises, but the old Scandi bloke who talks of their cruises being for the ‘thinking’ person…. Aka we don’t want any plebs!

Love Enma B

I'm only 50 but I dislike the chummy, chatty, fun style r4 programs have adopted. I want formality, seriousness and in depth discussion. It's not radio 1!!
Don't blame Radio 1, it's the interlopers from Radio 5.

I don't listen to PM as a protest against Evan Davis, the epitome of a BBC employee with his TWAW misogyny.

For those listening to the radio through an app - can you recommend one for non-BBC channels? I have BBC sounds downloaded but what do you use to listen to Times radio etc?
Thanks

ThePoshUns · 31/01/2026 10:10

There’s a Times radio app

HerculesMulligannn · 31/01/2026 10:45

There is a diary piece in the Times this morning (paper) saying Emma Barnett is leaving Today.

FatRosie · 31/01/2026 11:11

Today's presenters were Leila Nathoo and Simon Jack.

I like Sarah Montague too.

Astonishingly I glanced at that piece this morning and missed that crucial sentence.

<Whoops!>

(Just do not like her Today style. But I’m sure she’s on an upward projectory and won’t give a toss for my disapproval.)

I now feel I have to read the article and praise Emma for her hard work.

What was the feud between NR and EB?

nauticant · 31/01/2026 13:11

I assume it's a Manchester thing where EB is from the city and NR is from Cheshire.

FatRosie · 31/01/2026 13:19

I though bet he's a Macc lad. He is.

"Nick Robinson and Emma Barnett have been involved in a rumored feud since Barnett joined the BBC's Today programme. They have not co-presented on air for over 90 days, sparking speculation about a clash of egos. Barnett lodged a complaint against Robinson, claiming he was overbearing, but the matter was reportedly resolved without any formal action taken. Despite the tension, both presenters are expected to work together again soon, as schedules have been out of the ordinary following the departure of Mishal Husain. "

I have also been finding the Today programme quite a difficult listen in the past year. Woman’s hour isn’t a notch on its former glory (we all miss you Jane Garvey), and I’ll soldier on with Nula MCgovern. But yes, Today has been really difficult to enjoy whilst making my cup of tea and cracking the whip to get the mill turning.

please don’t suggest LBC, I can’t take such drivel at 6am. And I haven’t heard of Times Radio. I’ve taken to listening in the car to podcasts including that one with David Olusoga and the high speed speaking American lady.

is it Amol or Emma or any of the current others who are lacking somewhat? We miss you Mishal.

PM is currently the only saving grace that R4 has for me, along with the world at 10.

I can’t stand a few other programs, but there’s always the off button or Classic FM or UCB 2 for that.

(we all miss you Jane Garvey)

Jane Garvey and Fi Glover are on Times Radio every Monday to Thursday, from 2pm to 4pm.

Talkinpeace · 31/01/2026 17:02

Jenni Murray is very open about why she and Jane Garvey were pushed out of Woman's Hour.

This is very good news! I hope EB has realised she is not popular with Today Programme listeners.

I grew up listening to Jenny Murray @Talkinpeace. She is like a knowledgeable aunt. Love her too. Don’t believe that I’ve enjoyed WH as much since her or Jane Garvey’s departure.

NorWouldTilly · 31/01/2026 18:47

I’m sure I meant ‘trajectory’ above …

Talkinpeace · 31/01/2026 18:47

The BBC has tried to become a maker of news and opinion
rather than an impartial reporter thereon.

Hence the endless plugs on Today for other programmes and podcasts
and the 'challenge' of interviewees
rather than proper hiring of expert people to cover topics

faffadoodledo · 31/01/2026 18:58

Justin Webb is my favourite Today voice by a country mile. Super bright but wears it lightly.

Papyrophile · 31/01/2026 20:05

Justin Webb is everyone's favourite Today presenter. Nice voice and pleasant manner. I do like Nick Robinson's Political Thinking programme too, and Amol Rajan's Re:Think series. The people they bring in to fill and vary the schedules are okay, but I'd like Katy Razzall from the Media Show to get a trial run on Today. I think she would be excellent.

Bruisername · 31/01/2026 20:07

I enjoy Americast

yes will be interesting to see who they bring in. I think the temps work well because they aren’t trying to assert themselves!!

Papyrophile · 31/01/2026 20:10

And I would like them to bring back a rotation of the older presenters like Steven Sackur that they pushed back to the World Service, before dumping them. I get that the Beeb wants young hip presenters, but it must be time for the executive suite to hoist in that there is a place and a value for age and experience in broadcasting.

Papyrophile · 31/01/2026 20:13

Times Radio is scooping all the elder great broadcasters and getting really good programmes as a result, because they are not trying to flog five or six three hour shows out of them, every week.

TwentyFourHoursToTulsa · 31/01/2026 20:42

I'm saying it now. One obvious person to go to Today is Matt Chorley.

Think about his progression - Times Radio, to BBC Radio Five Live, to...

Bruisername · 31/01/2026 20:44

I feel like they’ll replace her with a woman

please not any of the woman’s hour lot! They’ve ruined it for me with their inane questions and lack of basic comprehension

They've got to replace two people - Amol Rajan, and EB.

Let's hope they stop with this themed magazine show schtick. I just want incisive news, delivered incisively!
