Funfairs always make me feel on edge.

As for empty funfairs... 😱

I also dislike funfairs. Circus too for some reason. And while I enjoy going to old historical places because I like learning about history - like old NT houses something makes me feel very uneasy in them as well but I can never pin point why, it was really bad when I was a child but lesser so now.

Derelict houses with no windows.

They look ghostly and kind of creepy.

There's a derelict former asylum near me I just can't look at

Also derelict mills which are tall with numerous empty black windows.

Schools after dark (for parent evenings etc) Rumours say that my old school was haunted. I was convinced that I saw some creepy goings on there with my own eyes so it's probably psychological.

I will happily take my dc to Thorpe park but I’ve said no to travelling fair grounds. I understand there’s no big spike in injuries/deaths but I’m not comfortable they’ll put every bolt in tightly enough every time. Dc are fine with my paranoia and seem to agree.

ZiggyZowie · 28/01/2026 16:22

Oh and bridges .

I can't drive or walk over fast enough to get to other side because I fear they may collapse.

I'm particularly fearful of going by train over the Tay Bridge to Dundee because you can look out the window and see remains of the original bridge that fell in a storm and killed the people on the train.

Indoor swimming pools at night, used to have a recurring dream as a child I was locked in my local one 😱😱

Tearooms. Especially on Sunday afternoons

OnlyCosy · 28/01/2026 16:25

Very large old houses, hospitals, amusement parks, train stations, empty schools, shopping centres... Basically anywhere that is man-made and not home!

An exception is a library, even though I barely read. I'm not depressed or anxious, I just feel like I see past all the superficial weirdness that we've filled our lives with 🥴

BiggyJ · 28/01/2026 16:25

@Stickytoffeetartt Agree with that.
Think it's to do with corridors

Those horrible glass floors which you can walk over and look through at the same time. I visited Tower Bridge and had to walk right around the edges, holding on to the wall or whatever else looked solid. They make my legs turn to jelly.

Henry8thHoover · 28/01/2026 16:30

Weirs.
Also the workings of reservoirs, the pipes, channels and the plug hole things.

Edited

Tell us about it please!

Very posh hotel foyers.
Overly pretentious restaurants.
Railway Stations and Bus Stations.
Doctor's waiting rooms.
The Head's Office.
Posh shops when you are the only customer and you get starred at.
Pubs that look ok from the outside but then everyone turns and looks at you because you aren't a local and you can't possibly escape without having a drink first.
Any graveyard after dark.
Churches.

Foundress · 28/01/2026 16:32

Several years ago I needed an Ultrasound. I was sent to a local hospital that was in the process of closing down. Additionally it was adjacent to an old style asylum that had already closed. It was incredibly strange walking through this virtually abandoned hospital. All the wards were closed and only the outpatient department for Ultrasound patients open. There were no other patients in the waiting room. Eventually the Sonographer came out get me. She was working alone in that place 😱Very creepy!

Anywhere really high.

LittleGreenDuck · 28/01/2026 16:32

Allotments. It's where the bodies are hidden (in my overactive imagination).

peachescariad · 28/01/2026 16:34

The hulls and propellers of ships underwater

That's the local dog walking wood actually.

BiggyJ · 28/01/2026 16:36

Omg @Foundress I'm practically crying just thinking about that!

There is a local country house close to me with its own chapel and it’s a popular wedding venue. The chapel just feels off to me I was on edge the whole time I was in there.

Mirabellas · 28/01/2026 16:41

Pools with covers over them. MIL and FIL had one, after FIL died we moved in to help MIL as the house is quite big and she didn’t want to move. That bloody pool gave me utter fear even although the doors to it were locked and alarmed. Not long after MIL passed away we filled it in.

Resevoirs with those huge hill things that when they open the gates the water spills over.

Sky bars in Bangkok! So many pissed people staggering around and the windows aren’t that high. The views are beautiful but I spent my time watching people standing on stools to get a photo without the glass barrier in it.

That made me laugh! It’s strange isn’t it what our minds come up with? I like an allotment they remind me of my late DF. I find they have a certain sort of old shed/vegetable/tomato plant type smell that I find comforting 😂. I kept my late DF’s old coat for many years after he died. I used to sniff it for that smell.
