Funfairs always make me feel on edge.

As for empty funfairs... 😱

Churches because pictures and statues of Jesus on the cross always scared me. And graveyards for obvious reasons. I have Submechanophobia and Thalassophobia, so anything big underwater or deep water. I do like to watch videos just to scare myself though 🤣

Fernticket · 28/01/2026 21:22

I agree with PP about the elevated section of the M5. Also hate large tall white structures such as Lighthouses and wind turbines. They really creep me out.

calpolandcuddles · 28/01/2026 21:22

The White House...🍊🤡

shakercream · 28/01/2026 21:23

In 2012/2013 I worked in Southampton just as the old Bargate shopping centre was closing. All that was open in there was basically a shakeaway which I treated myself once a week to. It was soooo creepy (but worth it for the shakeaway at the time)

Bosnia.

Several years ago I needed an Ultrasound. I was sent to a local hospital that was in the process of closing down. Additionally it was adjacent to an old style asylum that had already closed. It was incredibly strange walking through this virtually abandoned hospital. All the wards were closed and only the outpatient department for Ultrasound patients open. There were no other patients in the waiting room. Eventually the Sonographer came out get me. She was working alone in that place 😱Very creepy!

I went for a chest xray under almost identical circumstances.
It was a Victorian hospital and the waiting room had framed photos on the walls of people in hospital beds in olden times. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

It's posh flats now.

@BiggyJ

Exactly. I do worry it’s something from my early childhood though - I went to a nursery that was in a big Victorian villa building. Shiver…

So did I! In fact, when I was 10 (in the 80s), the school celebrated its centenary.

The Strid on the River Wharfe, a 210 ft deep channel of river that has such a strong undertow that there is no way to not drown. it supposedly has a 100% fatality rate.

Also whirlpool spillways. Seriously, google them. It’s like a hole in the middle of a reservoir that sucks everything down. Absolutely terrifying.

Funny enough, I am an open water swimmer. I swim in lots of big deep bodies of water and rivers with currents. But the idea of either of the above just scares the pants off me. I’d never get close to either, ever. Don’t even want to see it from afar. Don’t like looking at pictures of them!

Fuck that shit!! 😂

BiggyJ · 28/01/2026 21:34

Ooof @Stickytoffeetartt

I live in Ireland and there are some old buildings here that used to be institutions but are being used for other things (such as for example Covid test centres during Covid). You are walking around and you see all these creepy old statues of Mary around the place and prayers on the walls about suffering and all sorts. It freaks me out .

Howyoualldoworkme · 28/01/2026 21:36

Cathedrals.
Nearly got locked in Winchester cathedral on a Sunday School trip so that's probably why!

Was it in the south by any chance? Seaside?

Snifflepig · 28/01/2026 21:37

I didn't realise so many of us were scared of churches and cathedrals!

Weirs.
Also the workings of reservoirs, the pipes, channels and the plug hole things.

This. I am convinced I'll fall in and get sucked away down the pipes

BiggyJ · 28/01/2026 21:39

Mazes.

And corn fields.

And cornfield mazes 😱

I'm confused by this. Surely you just turn round?!

Google nutty putty cave

having read about this cave and also watched “the descent” I cannot understand why anyone in their right mind would want to go caving.

Mistyglade · 28/01/2026 17:44

Me too, I keep clear of east anglia, it creeps me out that aside from churches everything seems limited to 2 storey buildings.

See also: Kirby just outside liverpool. I can’t bear the place, it’s just so flat apart from a few high rises

stollenisthebest · 28/01/2026 21:52

Lincolnshire and parts of Norfolk. I feel really uneasy that they are so flat that as far as the eye can see there's absolutely nothing. No hills, no trees, just nothing.

It's a much stronger feeling than just a dislike. It's like a pressure building up in my head and I feel quite unwell. There have been times when I've just wanted to turn round and escape as quickly as possible.

This doesn't apply to the city of Lincoln though, which is lovely because it has a Steep Hill in the middle of it!

ChurchWindows · 28/01/2026 21:55

Villages with no real people in sight but they're having a scarecrow competition week and there are random straw-stuffed ' people' sitting on benches or peeping over walls.

Wast Water.

Clifton Suspension Bridge and the woods around it.

Lobbies between two doors. One closes behind you then you're in some kind of air lock space before you can reach the next one. Often in art galleries.

Art galleries, especially when empty.

TheWelshposter · 28/01/2026 21:55

Circuses.

Vague memories of being brought to one as a child and hated it. Only good think about it was the slushie souvenir cup.

Churches give me the creeps too, even modern ones. I hate having to go in.

Mirabellas · 28/01/2026 21:56

Farms / houses in the middle of nowhere- I have to home visit people and these ones freak me out, keep expecting Leatherface to appear and hang me on a hook.

🤣🤣. We live in a very rural farm, it’s normally fine but rutting season can sound scary to visitors.

Yes, what the hell are those huge holes in reservoirs.. absolutely frightening
