Should I report this?

Each week I drive my kids to an activity and we pass a house on a busy corner. They have a union jack flag proudly waiving and next to that they have a life sized gorilla (obviously a racist trope given the context of the flag and current affairs). It was initially dressed in a suit of armour like a knight but now wears a penguin onesie. I find it to be a really offensive and ignorant attempt at a racist joke - the suit of armour and penguin costume reference "Britishness". Is this something to report? It seems totally bizarre that someone can display something inciteful and intimidatory like this given the climate but also I'm aware its on private land so are they actually breaking any laws? Should mention the house is bordered by a tall hedge and these things are elevated and outward facing eg definitely can't be seen by the owner from their own property and clearly meant to be seen by the public.

Yes sorry OP but it is not "blatant enough" to be deemed racist, even if that was the intention (which it may not have been).

I am not British and would not think much of it to be honest. If anything, the gorilla is dressed and changed in various outfits, probably as entertainment for the owners' children or passers by.

Sometimes a flag is just a flag and a gorilla is just a gorilla.

Fuck me

The OP is quoting the bible and Kate Garraway.

This should make us all sit up and think.

😂😂

"King kong" and "smile and wave boys" cracked me up 🤣

Funny thing isn't it that no other countries in the world are called racist for displaying their flags. But England, we are not allowed to be proud of our country. This shit should have been nipped in the bud years ago. Either be proud of your country or go elsewhere.

👏 spot on

Sunshine1500 · 26/01/2026 00:30

We need a photo!

Pacificbay · 26/01/2026 00:43

I've seen this and I agree with the OP
Context is everything.
It's positioned very high up, right next to a union Jack flag and on a main road just off a busy by pass.
Massive tall hedge, with nothing else visible.
The vibe is quite clearly racist.
As soon as I saw it when driving past, I thought "a racist lives there!"

TremblingMolars · 26/01/2026 00:56

Massive over reach OP. Calm down. Reporting a gorilla installation because of your interpretation of supposed symbolism? And how on earth is that a reportable offense? This is insanity.

newmama2023 · 26/01/2026 01:29

I am still so confused how being patriotic is now classed as racism? I dont understand how flying a British flag or the union jack in this country is a bad thing. The gorilla, i cant comment on.

RosyPumpkins · 26/01/2026 02:32

Well I think it sounds a bit weird but who would you report it to? Is it against the law? People can be offensive still, if they want.

OP, Just because some people put strange things in their gardens doesn’t mean that they’re racist - it is possible to be proud of being British, and even to display a Union Jack, without denigrating other races.

Wolmando · 26/01/2026 06:47

A photo would be useful since two people have seen it

auntfanny6 · 25/01/2026 22:59

Do you truly believe that the recent rise of flags in public spaces is all to do with patriotism? We all know there are undertones of racism and ‘we don’t want you here’ vibes. The whole thing was incited by Tommy Robinson ffs!

People who have had flags up in their gardens for years in the true spirit of patriotism- crack on. A bunch of right wing thugs hanging them off lampposts - no thank you. That’s not pride it’s divisive and intimidating.

Tommy Robinson is the least of this country's problems right now

What action do you expect the police to take?

Given the fact that we have police forces that will happily arrest and detain parents for confiscating their children's Ipads, its anybody guess 🤨

Teddybear23 · 27/01/2026 18:07

What have you got against gorillas and penguins? It just looks like a bit of fun to me.

Jopo12 · 27/01/2026 18:18

Really???
No crime has been committed, so what is there to report to the police?

What do you think you sound like?

"Mwaaaah, he hurt my feelings officer please arrest him because I don't like feeling all hurty"

You'd be laughed out of the police station.

A bit of jolly racism. All fun and games.

chisanunian · 27/01/2026 18:32

I'm British born and bred, and have lived in the UK all my life. I am now in my seventh decade.

A penguin of any description does not say 'Britishness' to me at all. It is literally not on my radar so I find this association baffling.

henlake7 · 27/01/2026 18:32

It sounds too early to tell to me....you need to wait for the gorilla to get a new outfit.
The first 2 might just be unlucky choices, the 3rd one will tell you if its a racist gorilla!😂

YankBrit · 27/01/2026 21:41

You could report it to your local counsellor and/or MP in the form of a question: “Would you consider this a racist statement? Is there anything that can be done about it?” and see how they respond.

One of the stand ups on live at the Apollo tonight said 'if they played wonder wall and handed out sandwiches it'd be lovely '.. and it reminded him of the Euros.

We had flags up for the 2012 queen's jubilee. It looked lovely.

Are there any jubilees or major sporting events happening at the moment though? Or is it just a case of thick racists following the instructions of Tommy Robinson to make a divisive statement?

TY78910 · 27/01/2026 22:36

OP the only thing you could do here is email your local Cllr and ask for advice. It won’t be a police matter, but maybe some kind of nuisance one. Unless your Cllr is a reformer then don’t - they’ll prob post it on their socials captioned ”look at this wonderful display of patriotism”

chisanunian · 27/01/2026 23:14

Maybe contact the local highways department and tell them that a gorilla in a penguin suit is causing a distraction to motorists at a busy junction.
