Should I report this?

Each week I drive my kids to an activity and we pass a house on a busy corner. They have a union jack flag proudly waiving and next to that they have a life sized gorilla (obviously a racist trope given the context of the flag and current affairs). It was initially dressed in a suit of armour like a knight but now wears a penguin onesie. I find it to be a really offensive and ignorant attempt at a racist joke - the suit of armour and penguin costume reference "Britishness". Is this something to report? It seems totally bizarre that someone can display something inciteful and intimidatory like this given the climate but also I'm aware its on private land so are they actually breaking any laws? Should mention the house is bordered by a tall hedge and these things are elevated and outward facing eg definitely can't be seen by the owner from their own property and clearly meant to be seen by the public.

Grow up stop inciting trouble

The police don’t even push to prosecute rape or interview thieves. They’re not going to do anything about a statue on private land that can be interpreted as racist but is not blatantly so.

I'm British born and bred, and have lived in the UK all my life. I am now in my seventh decade.

A penguin of any description does not say 'Britishness' to me at all. It is literally not on my radar so I find this association baffling.

I’ve seen it briefly in American TV sometimes. So I think it’s a U.S. trope of Britishness but not one most Brits would recognise of themselves.

I dont think so. I think that's a really priveldged position to comment from - if it doesn't effect you just walk on by.

"First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist...

...Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me"

I’ll remind you of the dire situation Jewish people are in at the moment in this country and the silence perpetuating this largely left leaning platform!!!

I cannot be the only person who imagines this OP to be clutching a bible in one hand and her pearls in the other, surely?

Crap as it may look, I would far rather our overstretched police services spend their time dealing with, y’know, actual crime.

Maybe take a different route to avoid seeing it? I also understand the connotations of the gorilla but it makes zero sense that it’s in an actual penguin suit and you’re stretching it to equate to a tuxedo ergo something an upper class/wealthy Englishman wore/wears. I mean, that’s some cryptic shit for a household of rednecks, if that’s the case.

Dollymylove · 28/01/2026 09:56

Would you be contemplating making a complaint if a Palestine flag accompanied the gorilla?

HeadyLamarr · 28/01/2026 10:08

I think we need a photo of a gorilla wearing a penguin onesie. That's bonkers.

Yes, the flag people are Tommy Robinson style jingoistic weirdos, but the gorilla in fancy dress is just surreal.

Beakthrough · 28/01/2026 10:12

I hate all the flag waving, but I wouldn't automatically see a Gorilla as racist, isn't it a bit racist to think gorilla = black man?

If the imagery is supposed to be black man dressed as Knight (which I really doubt it is) isn't that inclusive? The penguin link is even more tenuous. In my mind it goes to mickey take of Trump and Greenland.

"Tuxedo" is an Americanism. Do you mean dinner jacket?

It's hardly pin-striped suit, bowler hat and rolled-up brolly with a copy of the FT under the arm, is it?

😂

Wouldn't the simplest be to just ignore it?

I was wondering when someone would say that. It's quite sad.
