Looking for cheap walking pad to help build up my health, are they a waste of money or a good purchase?

Until a couple of years ago I had a really lovely expensive treadmill which I used on a daily basis but had to sell it as I needed the space and it was a very large gym type treadmill and due to some health issues I no longer have the energy to run.

However, I do really miss it, for walking on. We don't have the space for such a big treadmill now and I can't afford to go to the gym and due to my health issues I wouldn't always feel well enough to go to a gym anyhow.

I keep seeing these ads for walking pads and they look ideal for my needs.

I do get out for walks everyday with my dog but I'm looking for something that I could just pull from from under the bed and use on a daily basis to get some extra steps in and help build up my energy (I am on a quest this year to get better). I feel that a walking pad may be ideal as I just want to walk on it, I have no interest or energy to jog/run, I just want to move my body.

Does anyone have one of the cheaper walking pads and are they any good?

It’s worth checking with your local authority gym whether you might be entitled to a temporary free pass. The one I go to has 12 weeks for people with a BMI over a certain weight and the doctors can issue them to help people improve their health.

I don't want to go to a gym, I don't have the energy (as per my op).

I wouldn't qualify for a free pass. I am not on any benefits and have a BMI of 20. I have endometriosis and EDS which wipe me out so that's why I'm looking for something to use at home.

I ordered one but am sending it back, as there is nothing to hold onto and my balance is dodgy at times.

I have the urevo one but have since upgraded to a proper treadmill. It has been a life changing purchase for me - kickstarted a much much healthier lifestyle. I went from zero exercise to some form of workout every day now: run/walk/weights/swim. I still just do a walk on days where I know I’m going to be stuck on my laptop all day but where I don’t have the energy to do a full on workout. Sets me up for the day and I’d be doomscrolling for at least the time it takes in the morning anyway so it always feels like a win.

I got one on FB marketplace and have been using it daily. I work from home and I desperately needed to move throughout the day. Despite a very busy exercise schedule (CrossFit and dance six times a week) and walking the dog, I found it quite hard to get the steps in. Love it and wouldn't be without it.

My DD has always had proper treadmills but swapped to a deerun this year, the one with handles and that can go at a decent running speed. She says it’s the best treadmill she’s ever had (she’s had five!) they do walking pads too

Jk987 · 25/01/2026 17:45

The pavements and footpaths are free of charge and the fresh air is an added bonus!

WinterFrogs · 25/01/2026 17:48

I'm considering buying a walking pad too, but in the meantime there are some good low impact walking exercise video on YouTube if that's of any interest to you.

HurdyGurdy19 · 25/01/2026 17:49

I got mine from the TikTok shop. It was about £85, I think. It has a fold down handle, and wheels at the front for ease of movement.

It has a display panel which shows the speed at which you are walking, how long you have been walking for, the calories you have burned, how far you have walked and number of steps taken.

The picture, once it uploads, is of one very similar to mine, but I not the actual one I have. Mine is by Speedy Sports.

I use mine a lot - I keep it out permanently, tucked into a corner. There is an app to download (I haven't) as well with further information. And it has a shelf type thing on the handle, where you can slot your phone, tablet, kindle etc.

I love mine and would happily recommend it to anyone.

UREVO Smart Walking Pad, Compact... https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0F1YM8GKZ?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I have this one. Never given me any problems, 12 speed settings and a handy remote

That's the sort of thing I'm thinking of, I was worried as some online reviews say they break after a few weeks. Good to hear you've had no issues with yours.

My Dad bought one….he’s 86 now and wanted to exercise safely, indoors, without the risk of a trip or fall outside, and without having to worry about the weather.

He uses it often, daily if the weather is bad, and I’d say it has improved his fitness and overall health. He does some balance exercises and stretches each day as well.

I’d say go for it. From what I can see they are great for people who want to exercise gently in a safe way.

But not quite so convenient when trying to work on ones laptop or join meetings while walking 😀

I have what sounds like the same one by speedy sports from the tik top shop and can highly recommend. Fast enough to run on, the rail at the front is very sturdy. Remote control to speed up/slow down etc.

I keep coming across that brand online, I’ve not heard of them before. I’ll take a look on their website.

@Stonecoldhandswarmheart Please look on Gumtree, FB Marketplace, etc. Many people start with good intentions and sell them. I got mine (used twice) on Gumtree. I only walk on mine to build up my steps when no one’s home. It’s on wheels so easy to pull out/put back when not in use and it didn’t cost a fortune.

I currently have one sitting in my Tik Tok basket, I wasn’t sure how reliable they were off there. I’ll see if I can find that one, thanks.

I’m hoping if I get one to take it to show my elderly father. He’s stuck at home with my housebound mum most days and really needs to add some extra exercise in his day. Hopefully I can persuade him to get one too.

I’ve had a quick look today but many are still asking £100 or so for them, think I’d rather get one new incase it breaks down. I’ll keep checking though just in case a bargain pops up.
