Looking for cheap walking pad to help build up my health, are they a waste of money or a good purchase?

Until a couple of years ago I had a really lovely expensive treadmill which I used on a daily basis but had to sell it as I needed the space and it was a very large gym type treadmill and due to some health issues I no longer have the energy to run.

However, I do really miss it, for walking on. We don't have the space for such a big treadmill now and I can't afford to go to the gym and due to my health issues I wouldn't always feel well enough to go to a gym anyhow.

I keep seeing these ads for walking pads and they look ideal for my needs.

I do get out for walks everyday with my dog but I'm looking for something that I could just pull from from under the bed and use on a daily basis to get some extra steps in and help build up my energy (I am on a quest this year to get better). I feel that a walking pad may be ideal as I just want to walk on it, I have no interest or energy to jog/run, I just want to move my body.

Does anyone have one of the cheaper walking pads and are they any good?

The pavements and footpaths are free of charge and the fresh air is an added bonus!

Wow, amazingly helpful 🙄

I've tried all of that, they bore the hell out of me as do exercise classes. I'd rather use an exercise bike or walkingpad/treadmill in front of the tv or internet tbh, makes the time go by much quicker.

Fair enough!! Hope you’re ok find one that works for you 😊

DeQuin · 26/01/2026 13:53

I got one and used it a lot but it completely died after 18 months and aside from not being willing to spend another couple of hundred pounds on another one, it felt like a massive environmental waste for something so short lived (not something I was expecting to feel but there you go). It took me another two years before I could bring myself to take it to the tip.

That definitely is a problem if you have long legs. We returned our walking pad because with me at 5'7" and DH at 6'2" we kept walking off the edge. These are not made for people with long legs.

I thought that would be the case; if I run on mine I have to manage stride length

TheTVisneverbigenough · 26/01/2026 21:34

Does anyone have one which does not require electric? Manual one or what is it called?

Many years ago I had a manual treadmill and it caused me no end of pain in my shins. I'd never go back, electric all the way

Hi Puggy,
that looks great, is the handle easy to put up and down? I had one ages ago that required an alan key and was a pain to get in the right place. Is this one more simple?
TIA

it's just got a lever that you flip to lock / unlock the handle, no fiddling required 😄
I seem to remember using an allan key for something when I first set it up though - it may have been the little feet that you fold out to get the incline. I don't put it away as there isn't anywhere to stash it, but enough room to just push it out of the way.

For the smart arses suggesting pavements - I'm working on teaching the dog to walk on it. Stick that in your pipe 😆

Stonecoldhandswarmheart · 27/01/2026 09:05

It's arriving today.!

I will update later once I have it all set up.

Be vigilant about the silicone! I wasn't and I think that was probably what killed mine. Good luck x

Thank you. Luckily we still have a pot left over from my treadmill so ill make sure it's mot'd regularly!

Reading with interest - can anyone who has had a walking pad for a while comment on their robustness? I'm a size 22, and I worry that I would break a walking pad with my weight.

TheRealKatnissEverdeen · 27/01/2026 12:42

I purchased this one from Amazon a year ago (it's no longer in stock now) but is good. Has an incline which I keep it permanently on, has arm rail with a ledge that I can rest my phone / iPad on to watch something and also has a safety mechanism.

My two young sons (6 & 9) love using it also and can operate it themselves.

As others have said very useful to get steps on when home and, for whatever reason, can't get out.

Bonus is that it folds under sofa.

@StripedPillowcase one I've just looked at has a max weight of 110kg, so depends on your weight rather than your size

Thank you for the link to yours @TheRealKatnissEverdeen . I'm going to buy this one, depending on iPad compatibility, not sure how it compares price wise to the one you've bought, but the reviews look good, and it has a rail and the incline, which I feel will help me from falling off and increase longevity when hopefully I use it so much I need a hill to run up. In the safety of my own living room 😉

Walking pad with 9% incline

Inthefuturenow · 27/01/2026 13:20

I've had one for a couple of years. I got it on Amazon for I think about £130.
I use it on incline, 15 mins morning, lunch and evening at a decent pace. I got it because I moved from an active job to a sedentary one and for days like today when the weather is vile.
My cat also likes it and occasionally jumps on 😂

Walking pad with 9% incline

Just checked it out and looks to be of the same quality, if not better. I've had no complaints with my kne - I've just done a quick 15 min fast walk between cooking dinner.

Ok, after a bit more searching, I have bought this one, along with a bottle of silicone oil

Walking pad with 1%, 6% & 9% inclines

Really good incline options. You'll be running uphill in summer in no time 😜

helpfulperson · 27/01/2026 19:07

I've had one for about a week. Stupid question - what am I meant to be doing with the silicone oil?

Most will give a weight upper limit in the specs. Some are higher than others.

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 27/01/2026 20:06

I was going to post a link to the one I bought from Amazon but it doesn't seem to be valid any more. Regardless, it was just short of £100, goes up to 6mph (10kph) with a remote and has a handle to hold. Using it without holding on isn't as easy as I thought so I'd recommend a handle. I try to do half an hour a day at 4mph or more and its been perfectly fine so far.

When I was looking there seemed to be loads that look identical at the same price point so the are likely all from the ame (Chinese) manufacturer - but ours seems none the worse for that.

We bought one like this and had to send it back as we both have long legs. It simply wasn't long enough to walk on comfortably as our strides were too long.

Did you buy another better suited? I am tall with long legs and not sure if any of the walking pads on Amazon etc are long enough for me (and I have no idea what length I should be looking at)

Yellowsubmarine55 · 27/01/2026 21:15

We have have this one and it's great. I use it several times a week and watch TV.

No we didn't. It was bought so that DH could exercise and build his stamina up during the winter after open heart surgery, but we just didn't have room for a longer one. He has now managed to get a few walks in outdoors instead.

This is the one we bought TODO Walking Pad with 9% Incline for Home, 3 In 1 Under Desk Treadmill with Remote Control and App, 3.0HP 2-6KM/H Portable Walking Treadmill, Capacity 110 kg : Amazon.co.uk: Sports & Outdoors

It is only 110 cm long which simply wasn't long enough for us.

Thank you, that does help. The trouble is, as you say, the longer you go the less easy to store it becomes.

Can anyone who owns a walking pad post about how noisy they are? I live in a second floor flat, I do have carpet but am worried about noise for my neighbours. (I know from reviews that some walking pads overheat on carpet so I would put a bit of board down)
