Looking for cheap walking pad to help build up my health, are they a waste of money or a good purchase?

Until a couple of years ago I had a really lovely expensive treadmill which I used on a daily basis but had to sell it as I needed the space and it was a very large gym type treadmill and due to some health issues I no longer have the energy to run.

However, I do really miss it, for walking on. We don't have the space for such a big treadmill now and I can't afford to go to the gym and due to my health issues I wouldn't always feel well enough to go to a gym anyhow.

I keep seeing these ads for walking pads and they look ideal for my needs.

I do get out for walks everyday with my dog but I'm looking for something that I could just pull from from under the bed and use on a daily basis to get some extra steps in and help build up my energy (I am on a quest this year to get better). I feel that a walking pad may be ideal as I just want to walk on it, I have no interest or energy to jog/run, I just want to move my body.

Does anyone have one of the cheaper walking pads and are they any good?

I love mine. I do a gentle 5k most nights while watching football/sports. I’d otherwise be sat in front of the tv so it’s an easy win. Some days I’ll push myself and up the speed to do a longer distance but some days I’m just strolling. Either way it’s more active than I was before

I bought one just over a year ago - nothing particularly fancy and about £160a it's great during the winter in particular- has a foldable bar, goes up to 10km per hour and I just store it under the sofa.

Great if you're not feeling mega energetic but just want to get some brisk steps in!

Are they heavy, or difficult to manoeuvre? I like the idea of one to use at my standing desk, but would want to store it across the (carpeted) room under the sofa-bed.

Mine has two wheels at the front so pretty easy to manoeuvre (and a bit of final shoving to get it under the sofa properly)

I bought mine on Marketplace and so glad I did. I live out in the countryside with no street lamps so I use it a lot. As does my husband.

That’s what I’m hoping for. I always get a burst of energy in the evenings and not keen on waking the streets at that time of night so thought half hour or so whilst watching tv would be a good idea.

Just go out for a second walk. Save your money and get some fresh air

BubblinTrouble · 25/01/2026 19:26

Can you somehow work with it? As in can you put your laptop on it so you can work and walk, as that would be ideal for me. I keep looking to get one but not sure if I’d actually use it.

That's the sort of thing I'm thinking of, I was worried as some online reviews say they break after a few weeks. Good to hear you've had no issues with yours.

I have had mine since June. Used a few times a week for up to an hour

I have a treadmill but never use it as it’s in the garage and cold! I’ve been looking at this one on Amazon. It has an incline which I quite like to help build fitness https://amzn.to/49FZSjp

DemonsandMosquitoes · 25/01/2026 20:26

I’ve heard they can cause motion sickness if you’re prone to that.

ElizabethsTailor · 25/01/2026 21:21

I’ve just looked on Gumtree near me and people are selling them for more than on Amazon (same brands) 😅

As per my op and replies you should have seen that due to health issues I would like a walking pad to add extra steps in during times when I don't feel well enough to go out and when it's dark etc but thanks for your helpful input.

I've never had any issues with any treadmill so hopefully I'll be ok 🤞

That's what I keep seeing. Think I'd rather buy new as knowing my luck I'd spend £80 or so and it would break the next day!

I use my walking pad all the time. I WFH and use it with my standing desk. I did 16,000 steps the other day!

MrsMiagi · 25/01/2026 22:02

Its been a gamechanger for me, especially in winter. I have a sedentary job so need all the help I can get. I'd recommend!

Seahorsesplendour · 25/01/2026 22:08

Honestly save yourself some money & try Lucy Wyndham- read workouts on you tube instead!

I bought a walking pad (reasonably priced z& reviewed well) it was fine and worked well
butvwasnt light and didn’t easily slide under or behind the sofa as I’d planned!! It was hard work moving it!

lucy workouts have suited me much better & my sister now has my walking pad …. She hasn’t used it either!!!! 🙈

Any time 😉

I’ve got one and use it daily in the evenings while I’m watching TV, it was around £100 and worth every penny. I walk a fair bit outside during the day, and I do other workouts too, but this is ideal for the evenings when I want to catch up on TV but don’t want to be sat still.

WhatsitWiggle · 25/01/2026 23:52

@somanychristmaslights what standing desk do you have? I've got a walking pad but it's in the middle of the lounge and the gap under my sofa isn't big enough to hide it away. I figured if I changed my desk, I could walk whilst on my many teams calls.

Clefable · 25/01/2026 23:56

I have a standing desk and a WalkingPad Z1. It works really well but I would want one with handles if I was using it away from the desk and freestanding in room I think (I have a proper treadmill for running so the walking pad is only ever used with my desk).

BangFlash · 25/01/2026 23:57

I got one from amazon at Christmas, about £60. It goes up to I think 6km/h which is a fast walking speed. I do intervals of medium and fast walking.

Mine doesn't have a bar because I wanted to be able to have it partly under my desk. As PP says it's pretty dangerous without one, my balance is surprisingly bad. I'd def get a handle if I purchased again.
