Do you like shortbread?

It's one of those foods that I never buy myself but often have it given at Christmas. I don't dislike it as such but I find it a little too sweet for my taste - that's why I prefer biscuits like HobNobs and Lotus Biscoff. Cheap shortbread is grim compared to the stuff made with clotted cream.

It’s not something I’d ever gravitate to, no. I mean I don’t dislike it but it’s quite boring to me, if I’m going to have a biscuit I like something chocolatey personally.

PragmaticIsh · 25/01/2026 11:16

Homemade and still warm = food of the gods.

Bought shortbread is usually dry and disappointing.

muddyford · 25/01/2026 11:17

I love it. I loathe those Lotus Biscoff things though!

I love it!

I do quite like it, but agree it only ever seems to make an appearance when you're given some for Christmas. My employer gives us all a hamper every year and there's always some Scottish shortbread in there.

When I was younger I used to make it sometimes.

soupyspoon · 25/01/2026 11:20

I want to like it, Ive had very very well made 'posh' stuff and Ive had shop bought stuff. I wouldnt choose it over other types of biscuit.

BernadetteJune · 25/01/2026 11:21

Love it!

justtheotheronemrswembley · 25/01/2026 11:22

It is very sweet, and that is an advantage I suppose because unlike other biscuits, you only ever want to eat one!😁

SueSheeMee · 25/01/2026 11:23

I love the proper all butter stuff, my absolute favourite biscuit, and DS's too. He always gets a big box at Christmas.

Secretseverywhere · 25/01/2026 11:23

I think if it’s too sweet it’s probably rubbish shortbread. It should really have a big hit of butter and a shimmer of sweetness. Sugar is a cheap ingredient so is used as filler. When I make shortbread it’s about 500g of cornflour/ butter/ flour to 100g of sugar.

I’m also aghast at the amount of sugar supermarkets stick in scones and find flavoured porridge sachets an abomination so am probably just judgy about excess sugar in general.

Disturbia81 · 25/01/2026 11:23

It’s food of the gods for me.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 25/01/2026 11:24

I love it. Not the cheap stuff though. But I find it much plainer and less sweet than the biscoff the OP mentions? It's the reason I prefer shortbread because it's less sweet and a lot plainer.

minipie · 25/01/2026 11:25

Made with clotted cream?? Never heard of that.

I quite like it, the proper butter version, but like a pp it wouldn’t be my biscuit of choice.

TheTecknician · 25/01/2026 11:26

Petticoat Tails shortbread always arrives broken and it's impossible to snap it into the triangular pieces!

Edit. I still have some Clotted cream sb at home which I got at Christmas. I'll finish it eventually.

One of the first things I ever learned to cook. My is,if I may be allowed to say so out loud, absolutely delicious.

Sometimes just perfect with a cup of coffee.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 25/01/2026 11:27

Yes I like it, wish I didn’t as it’s very fattening.

Bonbon21 · 25/01/2026 11:27

Clotted cream has no place in shortbread!

OttersMayHaveShifted · 25/01/2026 11:29

Yes. I find it less sweet than Hobnobs and lotus biscuits tbh. It's only good if it's made with butter instead of cheap fat or palm oil though. Homemade is lovely. I can't eat it any more as I am gluten intolerant. Might try making some with gf flour but it wouldn't be the same!

MerryGuide · 25/01/2026 11:29

Its so good and I'm always suprised to remember how much I like it. Currently making a shortbread cranachan for Burns night and snaffling loads as I go

Papergirl1968 · 25/01/2026 11:29

It wouldn’t be my biscuit of choice because it doesn’t dunk well but a patient (I work in a GP surgery) brought in a tub of home made shortbread at Christmas and by god, that was amazing!

minipie · 25/01/2026 11:31

I like shortbread in fat rectangular sticks rather than triangles or rounds. Better for dunking although you have to be careful!

I have the opposite problem as I can’t stop eating it.

Bjorkdidit · 25/01/2026 11:35

Yes it's probably my favourite 'normal' biscuit as in I'd always pick a shortbread off a plate that's also got custard creams, digestives etc.

But its got to be all butter, but 'nice' supermarket level is absolutely fine for me.

lostarc · 25/01/2026 11:35

Properly made yes. Mass produced stuff not so much.

connie26 · 25/01/2026 11:35

I love shortbread. M&S shortbread fingers are much cheaper than the fancy shapes which they also sell and which are exactly the same.
