*Common as in popular!

12 yr old DC has an inordinate number of female friends called Isabelle/Isabella/Isabel/Isobel and other variants of the same.
I would say at least 10.
The male equivalent is Hugo.
There are 5 I can think of without trying too hard.
We are based in the SE home counties.

What are the most popular names in your DC/s friendship groups?

I teach in a very mixed comprehensive and the names we have millions of are Lily and Izzy for girls, Riley and Alfie for boys, Taylor for both sexes. And yes a lot of names from all over the world including two lovely Oluwanifemis. No Mabels, no Olives, no Ottilies, no Axels or Judes or Aces - can’t believe so many of you are seeing all these! I’m fascinated!

The names of the babies at baby groups we attend with our one-year-old are mostly similar in nature, what I would call classic but what others might call 'traditional', or, less charitably 'old-fashioned'. However, I think they are all beautiful and timeless, which I suppose I would say since our baby's name fits in that category too. There are no babies at the groups we attend with the same name as our little girl but we have heard of other babies nearby with the same name so I know it is far from rare, even though we had chosen it on the basis we thought it was unusual but not too unusual! Apparently it's much more common than we realised!
By far the most common girl's name in our baby groups is Mabel, followed by Grace, Nola, Hazel and Lily, a few Phoebes too. For boys, James and Teddy seem to be most popular. All lovely names, but I must admit I do love meeting a baby with a more uncommon name too!

My kids have very few friends with the same names as each other:

Boys - Yusuf, Mo, Ibrahim, Mordecai

Girls - Alesha, Latisha, Lucia

ADHDat43 · 25/01/2026 04:18

DS is 14 and at a (posh) private school. Multiple Charlies, Hugos, Christophers.

garlictwist · 25/01/2026 05:05

I don't have kids so not abreast of these things but was on a flight recently and sitting near a boy of around 8 called Hugo. I thought what a weird name it seemed for a child, more like something you'd associate with a Tory MP. But I guess I'm out of touch.

DinoCookie · 25/01/2026 06:02

Theo, Arlo, Albie, Freddie.

Isla, Ivy.

MirrorVent · 25/01/2026 06:18

Theo, James and Oliver for boys.

There are no repeats in the girls' names, though names beginning with an A, E or I are popular.

Fishingboatbobbingnight · 25/01/2026 06:45

Alicia, Amelia Freja

I have an Isabella who is 15 and we barely come across another. There was one other in her primary school of 600 dc and she only knows of 2 in her high school of over 1000. In our part of the world there is a LOT of miyas of various spellings. It’s a pretty multicultural area and Miya seems popular in British, Eastern European and Middle Eastern and Indian families. There is also a huge abundance of the ‘E’ girls names - Ellie,Ella,Emily,Esme. There is probably one of each at least in every class at the primary school I work you’ll definitely have an Ava in each year group if not every class as well. Ethan v popular among boys although the boys names are generally a bit more varied apart from the multiple Mohammed and quite a few Ahmed’s

sunnysunshinebear · 25/01/2026 07:00

Dc1 - year 6- Frankie (mainly boys), Isobel/Isabella

DC2 - year 4- Frankie (mainly girls), Evie.

DC2 has a top 5 name which I thought would be really common when he started school and he’s the only one in his year which surprised me!

LegoLandslide · 25/01/2026 07:17

DD4 - not duplicates but the same sounds and themes: Ella, Bella, Isabella, Annabelle, and lots of nature names, some more off the wall than others- Hazel, Fox, Winter, Autumn.

DS8 - a million Williams. There are three Mohammed variants in his class but they use different abbreviations/use middle names so it isn't as confusing as the Williams, who never seem to abbreviate.

West Midlands- can't move for 4/5 year olds called Jackson/Jaxon here. I feel like I fall over and Isla and a Mila every where I go too.

BestZebbie · 25/01/2026 11:40

Current tweens:

Lots of Theos and Freddies. Several Noahs.

Also a lot of similar Jacob/Jason/Jayden names, and for the girls, there are loads of Mia/Myla/Maias. Lily, Elsa and Ana are all popular (with variations of spelling), as are girls names with -Mae added to the end.

Jrisix · 25/01/2026 11:41

Overseas but most of the girls at nursery are called Amelia, Olivia or Sofia. Boys are all called Leo, Max or Paul (!)

These names are all so white - are people finding people from different cultures are adopting these names are are PPs just from particularly non diverse areas. DS school has a huge range of names from so many different places that we've not really come across many double ups apart from Charlotte which seems particulaly popular with both Anglo and chinese kids.

Agree, although most of the duplicate names (except Mohammed) are the "white" ones even in diverse areas. My daughter is at a grammar school in a multicultural town not far out of London where nearly 70% of the pupils are Asian but there is just a lot less overlap between the names. Maybe parents from non white ethnicities have more imagination!

Disclaimer: my 2 (white) kids both have names that have been mentioned as common ones on this thread. I didn't think I lacked imagination but maybe I do.

WMW · 25/01/2026 14:10

I met a baby today called Isabelle (sp?). So it's still going strong!

JoannaTheYodelingCowgirl · 25/01/2026 14:20

Lots of boys with names rhyming with Aidan at the local primary school. 9/10 they are little shits Grin

As for girls, theres lots of Mia/Myas, Lexis, Millies, Isabelles. Also a lot of double-barrel names like Jamie-Lea or Lexi-Rose or Mya-Mae.
DD10's best friend is a Mia.

AnotherNC22 · 25/01/2026 14:21

DD1 is in reception. The only repeats in her class are Muhammad and Louis. Plus we know a couple of Theos and Reubens outside school.

DD2 is nearly 2 and we dont really know any duplicate names. She came close to being called Maeve until we met 3 others within the first few days of her being born ,so decided to go with something else.

We are S London and I think its so diverse in terms of everyone's background and heritage that there is just a much wider variety of names in the mix.

BitSilly · 25/01/2026 17:13

DC said there are quite a few Summers as well when told about this thread.
