If you had that bad flu/virus in December, how are you now?

I had that rotten virus (flu? covid? other?) over a month ago. After a few days of being wiped out I was able to get back to work, but luckily it wasn't too long before the Christmas break. Took it very easy then. But I'm still wiped. Main things are tiredness but being quite puffed or unable for any exertion. I used to go the gym three times a week for a good workout, so this isn't normal for me. I can go for a walk, but uphill or up steps I'm totally puffed. I had to run for a bus the other day and it wasn't normal breathlessness after a sprint, it felt like my lungs were suctioning together trying to get the air back in. Tried the gym over Christmas and couldn't cope. I love the gym but have no desire to go back yet. Anyone else taking ages to get fully back to normal?

Same, all cough type symptoms are gone but the lungs aren't better yet.

Oh no.

I had it for about 10 days in December but thankfully turned a corner by Christmas Eve (was symptom free by then just had no appetite, felt like crap and was exhausted). I had the most delightful Christmas dinner after a week of not being able to face food though!

I am feeling fine now and was full recovered by NY. (I WFH / have a chronic autoimmune condition / have primary aged children - just to indicate demands on my energy levels)

Cough lingered on for weeks
Was lurgy free last week and woke up yesterday with a bad head cold
Very fed up

CurlewKate · 22/01/2026 11:58

DP is still coughing and tired. In bed by 9 every night. But much better than he was.

Pinkchilli · 22/01/2026 11:59

Feel exactly the same as you. Virus and cough for days in between Xmas and NY. No appetite, lost sense of smell and taste and exhausted. Still feel wiped out nearly a month later. If I sit down too long I fall asleep. Have been back at gym and it is a struggle and feel exhausted afterwards. Have been going twice per week for five years so shouldn’t be an issue! Have two young kids and wfh so functioning but only just.

Do you think you had RSV? I am sill breathless and tired after it and my doctors says it can cause anemia so I’m going to try some iron

I don't know which one it was. It was sore throat, cough, awful sinus, fever, chills, night sweat, stomach pains, so I think it was the flu. Off work for two days then it was the weekend and spent all those days in bed/couch. Could work from home from the Monday. I'm just wondering if I go to the GP or if it's just normal. The first time I had covid I had this kind of thing for about three months after and it resolved itself, so I'm not sure. I also had whooping cough about 18 months ago so I'm also wondering if my lungs are a bit wrecked after that. It's good to benchmark against other people!

I really want to go to the gym just for the social side and because I'm starting to feel stiff as a board. But my energy is saying no way! It's tough as there's all these things that my brain is motivated to do but my body says I'm only able for work, kids' activities, dinner and bed.

Started on December 6th, much much better but still easily wiped out and finding cold wet weather difficult. Experience from years ago taught me that pushing exercise too soon just makes recovery longer and harder. You will recover.

PatchouliPrincess · 22/01/2026 15:27

I didn't have a cough but all through December I felt utterly drained and unwell. I had nightsweats, 'hot flushes' during the day, my lymph nodes were inflamed and just felt 'ill'. DH was the same.
I'm still shattered now and just want to hibernate.

JacknDiane · 22/01/2026 15:29

Yep. Just tired really.

pasteldome · 22/01/2026 15:31

OK but I think my sinuses are still affected, still a bit run down. I think it was made worse for me because it hit in December when I still had so much to do for Christmas and I pushed myself to keep going when I needed to rest. If it had hit me now when I can relax a bit more I think I'd have got over it sooner.

Bimblepops · 22/01/2026 15:38

I had it at the start of December and it then developed into a chest infection (asthmatic). Took me around 3.5 weeks to feel well again.
I'm still absolutely exhausted, regardless of how much sleep I get and my lung capacity is way below what it usually is. I've also noticed that my lips are continually cracking, despite careful application of balms and salves.
Very bored of it all now!

CapriceDeDieux · 22/01/2026 15:43

Ill from 21/12. Still struggling with tiredness. Cough occasional, but appetite still weird. DH seems to have declined a bit this week and is v tired and feeling rotten. Only ibuprofen helps

tsmainsqueeze · 22/01/2026 15:51

I started on 3rd Dec , wiped out for 4 days bedridden could barely stand up , most of the symptoms listed too.
Now over a month later i am nowhere near back to my usual energy level but getting better , i am so happy to get into my bed every night !

bumphousebump · 22/01/2026 15:54

Very tired after a month - spent Christmas and NY doing nothing - 2 weeks wfh as had awful cough. 1st week back in office and been knackered. And going to an exercise class tonight - but I'm not sure it's a good idea - it's Pilates so not too bad.

I want to go back to the gym (was going 3 times a week) but I'm not sure it's a good idea yet - I might book in for Monday.

I'm still v v tired. Though the cough has almost gone.

ThatWasMyLastFatFreeFrush · 22/01/2026 15:55

Knackered. And my bones are stiff. I know they're meant to be stiff but they hurt!

BlahBlahName · 22/01/2026 16:41

It seems there are loads of us who were sick in December and are still not back to normal. It's such a pain but at least it's in the realm of normal for whatever that dose was. @DeanElderberry I agree with you re the exercise. I haven't tried anything more than a walk since I tried the gym and couldn't manage it.

I hope you all recover soon and we'll be back to the joys of exercise and energy.

I got ill on Christmas Day, tested positive for “flu” and hospitalised for a week. I was coughing so much I broke a rib and inflamed my oesophagus. The cough is lingering but it’s the exhaustion that is getting to me. I usually work 4 days a week and have only managed 2 each week.

MoonWoman69 · 23/01/2026 18:06

Still not 100%. I feel exhausted all the time now.

Crushed23 · 23/01/2026 19:29

How old is everyone?

DP and got this on Dec 22nd/23rd and were very ill (bed bound, living on Uber Eats) for a few days, but by Dec 30th we were well enough to catch a 6 hour flight and then go to a rave on NYE. Back in the gym on Jan 5th.

We’re mid-30s.

I'm late forties but very fit and well, no health concerns.

Can I ask - with this horrible virus pending, did you take precautions? I don't mean covid/flu shots controversial but general stuff like hand washing and avoiding hugging?
