Has everyone stopped getting letters?

Our mail has gone from being every day,
to a couple of times a week, to once a week, and now we’ve not had any post in 12 days. It’s not just me, our local Facebook is full of people moaning about it. Apparently Royal Mail have frozen recruitment, have no staff, and have a massive backlog due to the snow. They are apparently prioritising parcels, and we’ve had a couple of those.

It is the same story nationwide?

No snow here.

Parcels are fine and I seem to get delivery a couple of times a week? TBH we don’t get many letters and are not expecting anything urgent like hospital appointments so probably not a good anecdote.

WindyBeech · 19/01/2026 14:30

We're now on the alternate day system Mon/Wed/Fri then Tues/Thurs/Sat and it's pretty reliable unless our postman is on holiday when you don't expect anything until he returns - he did train cover before Christmas but then someone else was put on his round...

Lauren1983 · 19/01/2026 14:38

We get post about twice a week. I have a weekly magazine subscription. I should get it on Wednesday although often it arrives on a Thursday. It hasn't arrived yet and we haven't had post since Wednesday. I fully expect it to arrive tomorrow (the same day the new issue is out!). It might only be a magazine but I presume it would be the same it was an important letter. I don't have any faith that things will arrive on time.

Meadowfinch · 19/01/2026 14:46

We get letters twice a week. I don't mind.

mintich · 19/01/2026 14:47

We've had no snow amd our local sorting office has also said they are prioritising parcels. Letters come about once or twice a week and not at regular times.

TheGriffle · 19/01/2026 14:48

No snow here and no post. I’ve been waiting for my new debit card for almost 2 weeks now.

Springersrock · 19/01/2026 14:53

I can’t remember the last time I had letters, before Christmas I think

I’m waiting for a new debit card and a hospital appointment letter for my DD (although I’ve already had an email with the date/time so that’s not too important) that were sent out before Christmas. Still getting parcels through fine.

We’re getting some letters through at work but only special delivery/signed for stuff. We’re waiting for some paperwork from the accountant and some V5Cs from DVLA that were sent a couple of weeks ago.

I was chatting to our work postman and he says that all overtime has been banned, all Christmas temps have been let go and they just don’t have time to deliver everything so have been told to leave letters and concentrate on special delivery/signed for/parcels.

shellyleppard · 19/01/2026 14:54

Our postal service is very patchy. Sometimes every couple of days, others a week or more between ( east Midlands)

MiddleAgedDread · 19/01/2026 14:56

No snow here and I’ve only got mail once or twice a week at most for a few years now. The postman does his rounds daily because I see him but I only get post occasionally and when I do there’s often several items and it can be dated from days and days ago.

LetsGo26 · 19/01/2026 15:03

I am part of a Royal Mail monitoring survey and the survey items are glaringly obviously survey items so you would imagine they would endeavour to deliver those asap.

Even so, I still only get letters if they are delivering parcels.

Freepaintjob · 19/01/2026 16:06

Make it make sense.
Before all of this technology we used to get post twice a day. And it was reliable. Now they have better systems, less people posting but still no post.

GentleSheep · 19/01/2026 16:09

Still having mail delivered by the postie 6 days a week here (W. Midlands).

Egglio · 19/01/2026 16:11

I'm happy enough getting post less regularly. The only time it concerned me was when this meant my new card and PIN were delivered together.

But in some ways, plastic cards and PIN are probably on their way out anyway.

Nomedshere · 19/01/2026 16:13

I get very little letter post. Bills are online and I dont want paper copies of policies sent. Love it

Nincompoo · 19/01/2026 16:13

I’m really glad it’s not just me but what an absolute shit show!

We’re waiting for a replacement provisional driving license for one of the kids as they have their theory test on Thursday. The sorting office desk is only open 2 hours a day…. While I’m at work!

Haven’t been getting regular post for about a year here. Seems to come all at once every ten days or so. Very annoying!

Teenagerantruns · 19/01/2026 16:16

Up until Christmas we had post everyday. Im at home atm so notice post lady.
Now it seems to be every other day. I mean l dont get post but we are waiting for a hospital letter and a card.

Thatcannotberight · 19/01/2026 16:17

No snow, we don't get a lot of mail anyway, but I see our lovely postie every day walking this round.

OrangeisthenewBrown · 19/01/2026 16:22

DH and I were talking about this the other day. Twenty years ago, whenever we were going away on holiday we would leave a key with our neighbours and ask them to pick up the post from our doormat and put it all in a big cardboard box, which we would leave in the kitchen.
It used to take me ages to go through it all when we got back. There were always several important letters there.

Fast forward to now. When we go away, nobody picks up the mail from the doormat. When we get home, I scoop up the heap of leaflets and junk mail. It takes less than two minutes to go through it and virtually all of it goes straight into the recycling bin.

Not so long ago, Royal Mail was collecting and delivering tens of millions of letters daily. Now it's only a tiny fraction of that.

Zov · 19/01/2026 16:25

We get the postie coming Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and every other Saturday. (Rural village, 4 miles from a small market town.)

Disturbia81 · 19/01/2026 16:25

Yes people in my bit of Yorkshire are having to go down to the delivery office to pick letters up as it’s that bad. This is our countries mail service, essential things like this shouldn’t be allowed to get like this

SkelatorIamNot · 19/01/2026 16:26

We are on once a week deliveries for post here and have been for ages.

Pineapplewaves · 19/01/2026 16:29

Our post person comes daily, always around lunch time as I see them out of the window. We are pretty much paperless so it’s rare they actually walk up our path.

LlynTegid · 19/01/2026 16:33

I don't think I get a postal delivery daily, but have still had letters come (usually the few bills I still get by post).

However, the OP is not the first to have a long period without a postal delivery that I have read about. The Royal Mail lost its way a long time ago, even before the post office was separated. In my opinion the regulations about parcel carriers are inadequate which means they face what I consider unfair competition.

The government minister who started enabling the rot many years ago was Peter Mandelson.
