U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance said he had arrived in Budapest just days before the parliamentary elections because “Brussels’ interference” in the vote was outrageous.
He also stressed that Orbán’s leadership could be a model for Europe. He added that the U.S. would do everything possible to ensure Orbán’s re-election.

Orbán said that if his Fidesz party wins the April 12 elections, he will be able to implement a plan to force Ukraine to resume supplies of Russian oil to Hungary.

There is almost no traffic in the Strait of Hormuz after the announcement of a ceasefire in the US-Israeli war against Iran, CNN reports.
Ships and insurers need positive signals before resuming traffic in this waterway, CNN writes, citing open shipping data and expert opinion.

Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) has disabled Russia’s last railway ferry in Kerch.
The Slavyanin was used to supply Russian troops in Crimea with fuel, equipment, and ammunition.
Earlier in March, the Avangard ferry was disabled, and the Slavyanin was damaged.

❗️Russia has threatened the Baltic states if they continue to support Ukrainian drone attacks, according to The Times.
The warning to Estonia, Finland, and Latvia comes in response to Ukraine’s ongoing strikes on key Russian oil infrastructure in the region.

The European Commission will find a way to provide aid to Ukraine in April, even if Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán does not lift his veto on the €90 billion loan, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot told Franceinfo.
“I want this €90 billion loan to be finalized. I know that sooner or later it will happen. I am absolutely convinced of this.”

Russia’s fourth-largest refinery, Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez, has halted operations following a drone strike, Reuters reports.
According to sources, the Lukoil facility shut down on April 5 after a Ukrainian drone attack. Fuel supplies may be disrupted until at least the end of the month.
The refinery is one of Russia’s largest and produces a significant share of its gasoline.

Russian oil prices have risen to a 13-year high amid the war with Iran, according to Bloomberg.
The price of Urals crude reached $116 per barrel, almost double the level budgeted in Russia ($59). The increase is driven by a global price surge due to the conflict in the Middle East and restrictions on supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
At the same time, Russia’s revenue growth is being partially curbed by Ukrainian attacks on oil infrastructure and ports, which are disrupting exports.

In the Kharkiv region, a 19th-century architectural monument burned as a result of a UAV attack.
In the village of Velykyi Burluk, Kupiansk district, an enemy drone struck a historic wooden building. The fire covered about 2,000 square meters.

Pilots of the 23rd Khortytsia Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine discovered and destroyed a Pantsir-S anti-aircraft missile and gun system deep behind enemy lines.

A Japanese philanthropist has returned an Olympic medal to Stanislav Horuna, which he had sold to help Ukraine.
The Ukrainian karateka and bronze medalist at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics had put the award up for a charity auction in 2022.
A buyer from Japan purchased it for $20,500 to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine and later decided to return it to its rightful owner as a gesture of solidarity.

"We're certainly aware that there are elements within the Ukrainian intelligence services that try to put their thumb on the scale of American elections, on Hungarian elections," U.S. Vice President JD Vance said.

I'm not sure whether that comes under "projection" or under the pot calling the kettle black. On the whole I think the former. Or just as straight lying, perhaps.

Politico: Budapest and Moscow signed an agreement in December 2025 to expand ties between the two countries.
The 12-point deal was signed by Hungary’s foreign minister and Russia’s health minister following talks in Russia. The text outlines plans to deepen economic, trade, energy, and cultural cooperation.
The agreement also opens the door for Russian companies to launch new electricity and hydrogen projects in Hungary, as well as closer cooperation in oil, gas, and nuclear fuel sectors.
In addition, Budapest agreed to employ teachers from Russia to “strengthen” the Russian language in Hungary, and to establish exchange programs at all levels of education between the two countries.

🇷🇺🇮🇷Russia is providing Iran with satellite data to help prepare strikes on U.S. targets in the Middle East, Reuters reports, citing Ukrainian and Western intelligence.
In particular, Russian satellites conducted nine imaging passes over Saudi Arabia. They were spotted over an area near the King Khalid Military City, where air defense systems may have been of interest.
Turkey, Jordan, Kuwait, and the UAE were also under surveillance. Additional sites were monitored in Israel, Qatar, Iraq, Bahrain, as well as at the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean.
Russian satellites are also regularly tracking the Strait of Hormuz — a key route for global oil and gas supplies, which Iran has effectively blocked.

Overnight, Russian forces launched 176 strike drones at Ukraine. Air defenses shot down 146 of them.
A total of 24 drones hit targets in 12 locations, while debris fell in one more area.
🔴Zaporizhzhia: One person was killed in a strike on the regional center. A 47-year-old woman was also injured.
🔴Odesa region: Russian forces attacked the southern part of the region, damaging port and civilian infrastructure. A warehouse and a utility building were partially destroyed.

Why the hell does Vance hate Europe this much? why does he openly support corruption and viciousness?

Because some in the current US administration see the EU as a competing politicsl and economic block and so will do anything to undermine it....and will certainly do that to favour one of Putin's allies.

The irony of Vance grumbling about the EU intefering in a vote is off the scale.

I just wish he'd keep his nose out and literally stay the F away from Europe and the EU for the forseeable future........

Key Takeaways

  1. Russia maintains expansive territorial goals in Ukraine beyond demands for Ukraine’s withdrawal from Donetsk Oblast.
  2. Ukrainian technological adaptations and drone innovations continue to grant Ukraine tactical and operational leverage as Russian forces suffer from high casualties.
  3. The Kremlin continues to engage in a coordinated information effort designed to elevate nuclear escalation rhetoric, likely in an attempt to drive a wedge between the United States and the European Union.
  4. The Kremlin may be leveraging its “Time of Heroes” program to replace the Belgorod Oblast governor with a veteran of the war in Ukraine as part of a wider effort to staff government positions with a cadre of loyal veterans.
  5. Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the Pokrovsk direction.
  6. Russian forces launched 176 drones against Ukraine.

After Starmer’s announcement of his intention to seize Russian “shadow fleet” ships, sanctioned tankers began to be escorted by Russian Navy ships as they passed through the English Channel, The Telegraph reports.
On April 8, the tankers Universal and Enigma passed through British territorial waters, accompanied by the frigate Admiral Grigorovich. They were followed by the Royal Navy auxiliary ship Tideforce, which, however, did not attempt to board them.

Iran has told brokers it will limit the number of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz to about a dozen a day and will charge fees under a ceasefire brokered during the presidency of Donald Trump.
“Ships that do pass will have to coordinate with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” Arab brokers said.
Only four ships were allowed to pass on Wednesday, the fewest since early April, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence, down from more than 100 a day before the war.

❗️As of early April, the Russian Federation has expanded the number of its unmanned systems troops to 101,000, Commander-in-Chief Syrskyi said.
By the end of 2026, it plans to increase this number to 165,500, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.
This is evidenced by Ukrainian intelligence data, the general noted.

In Saudi Arabia, a drone attacked the Petroline oil pipeline, which is called the “economic artery” of the kingdom, the Financial Times and Bloomberg reported, citing sources.
The drone attack took place just hours after the declaration of a ceasefire between the United States and Iran, and it hit one of the pumping stations along the 1,200-kilometer pipeline.
This oil pipeline exports oil to the Red Sea, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. It has become a key route following the closure of the strait.
Reuters writes that Iran is involved in the attack.

Russian authorities are considering canceling the traditional May 9 Victory Day parades in Moscow and St. Petersburg due to the alleged threat posed by Ukraine’s new long-range missiles, The Moscow Timesreported on April 8.

The European journalism project VSquare has published a new investigation detailing how Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjártó coordinated with Russia to block Ukraine’s path to the EU and other similar steps.
In particular, during the European Council summit on December 14, 2023, when leaders were to decide on the opening of negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, Szijjártó called Moscow during a break between meetings and revealed the Hungarian “blackmail strategy.”
That time it did not work — Orbán eventually stepped out “for coffee” during the meeting, and the decision was made without him.
Also, on July 2, 2024, when Orbán arrived in Kyiv, Szijjártó immediately called Lavrov to inform him about the content of the conversation with Zelenskyy and discussed organizing Orbán’s trip to Moscow before the NATO summit in Washington, when Hungary had just assumed the presidency of the EU Council.
At the time, these plans were kept secret from the EU and NATO — something that European officials later expressed great outrage over in private comments.

A record 33,000+ enemy UAVs of various types were destroyed by interceptor drones in March — twice as many as the previous month, Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said after a meeting with interceptor drone manufacturers.

Ukrainian opera GAIA-24 entered the top seven projects in the world.
Opera GAIA-24. Opera del Mondo from the Ukrainian laboratory Opera Aperta became a laureate of the prestigious international platform Music Theatre NOW.
The production is dedicated to the ecocide caused by the war, in particular the consequences of the explosion of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. This is not just a performance, but a powerful artistic statement about the fragility of nature and human responsibility.

🇳🇴 Ukraine has not yet received the F-16 fighter jets promised by Norway — they are currently undergoing repairs in Belgium, NRK reports, citing three anonymous sources and a response from the defense minister.
Back in August 2023, Norway’s prime minister announced during a visit to Kyiv that the country would transfer six of its F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine, while the defense minister promised delivery by the end of 2025. However, none of these aircraft have yet entered service with Ukraine’s Air Force.
Previously, several Norwegian officials had given the impression that the F-16s were already in Ukraine. Now, Defense Minister Tore Sandvik has confirmed that the jets are still being repaired in Belgium.
In particular, two of the fighters were used to train Ukrainian pilots in Denmark, but have been undergoing repairs in Belgium for over a year. Another four aircraft were sent disassembled to a facility in Belgium in April 2025. That facility is facing capacity issues with servicing F-16s, which is delaying their transfer to Ukraine.
▪️In March, Belgian journalists also found that over the past two years, Belgium has not delivered a single one of the 30 F-16 fighter jets it had pledged to Ukraine.

Ukrainian forces destroyed a bridge in the temporarily occupied part of Kherson region using drones — the first known case of a drone operation leading to the complete destruction of a bridge, The Telegraph reports.
According to the report, Ukrainian troops used British-made Malloy T-150 drones over the course of two months to carry out the strike.
The mission took place in early 2025 but had not been publicly disclosed until now. The bridge crossed a tributary of the Dnipro River called the Konka and was considered a critical target.
For months, Ukrainian forces had tried to destroy it using airstrikes and HIMARS rockets, but without success. The task was eventually assigned to the 426th Marine Corps Unmanned Systems Regiment.
The breakthrough came after a Russian serviceman published photos of the bridge’s internal structure, allowing Ukrainian engineers to identify vulnerabilities and carry out precise strikes on key elements. t.me/liveukraine_media/39111

“What is the point of this question? I am not responsible for this political situation. We agreed to talk only about healthcare,” Galdikas said.

Air defense forces neutralized 99 out of 119 Russian drones overnight.
Ukraine’s Air Force reports that 16 attack UAVs struck targets across 11 locations, while debris fell in four other areas.
▪️In particular, Russia attacked the Zaporizhzhia District in the morning. One person was killed and four others were injured. Several private houses were destroyed in Balabyne.
▪️In Odesa Oblast, a critical infrastructure facility was damaged. No casualties were reported.

Key Takeaways

  1. Russian and Ukrainian reporting appears to confirm battlefield reporting that Ukrainian forces have achieved a drone advantage over Russian forces on the battlefield. Ukraine’s drone advantage is likely contributing to the stalling of Russian advances and recent Ukrainian counterattacks.
  2. Ukrainian forces’ increasing strikes against Russian air defense systems and drone interception rates have facilitated recent Ukrainian battlefield successes.
  3. Unverified reporting suggests that the Kremlin privately acknowledges Ukraine’s upper hand in drone operations on the battlefield and defense industrial base (DIB) production.
  4. The Kremlin is deploying Russian military vessels to escort Russian sanctions-evading tankers through the English Channel.
  5. Russian forces continue to conduct covert submarine operations near British undersea fiber-optic cables and pipelines in the North Atlantic Ocean.
  6. Ukrainian forces used drones to destroy a Russian-controlled bridge in occupied Kherson Oblast, possibly for the first time in combat history.
  7. Ukrainian forces recently advanced in the Kupyansk direction.
  8. Russian forces launched 119 drones against Ukraine.

Long before pysanky were decorative, they formed a visual vocabulary tied to nature and spirituality.
Central to the tradition are recurring motifs: the eight-pointed star, ruzha, symbolizing the sun god, Dazhboh; the broken cross or windmill, svarha, representing the god of sun, sky, and thunder; and the triangle, first connected to raked fields and later associated with the Holy Trinity.

Oh I might have missed that. Did Starmer actually compare Trump with Putin, or just mention them in the same breath?

The bit I've seen is Starmer saying:
"I'm fed up with the fact that families across the country see their bills go up and down on energy, businesses' bills go up and down on energy because of the actions of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin or Trump."

Which I thought was also deliberately done: bracketing the undeniable effects of the two men's actions together in a way which will chime with the audience, while carefully not saying anything to compare them as people. So he can still pick up the phone to the orange buffoon and say, "But I was just acknowledging you're the most powerful man in the world <stroke> Here, have some more kibble".

(Then presumably go and wash, after dealing with such a rancid human being. I don't envy Starmer or any of the NATO or EU politicians who are having to juggle Trump.)

Sir Keir Starmer meets uniformed aircrew members during a visit to Taif Airbase in Saudi Arabia, 8 April.

'We should not be at the mercy of events abroad' - Starmer

The prime minister says "shocks" like the conflict in Iran are becoming more frequent.
