Things you're holding off buying because you don't know if they're worth it

I've been holding off buying a hand held steam cleaner (I have a chronic pain condition so if it helps make cleaning physically easier, great!) as I'm not sure if they're as good as the Tiktok reviews I keep seeing say they are. I thought Mumsnet would be good to ask as everyone is very honest on here, and then I thought maybe a thread where we post the thing we're unsure of so others can say yeah actually that's decent, buy it-or not-might be a good idea?

Anyone using a steam cleaner, are they decent? Anyone else got things they're unsure if they're worth the cost that they'd like an opinion on?

People who have the Philips Lumea - does it work on underarm/bikini line hair?

My thing is a Lumie Bodyclock. I am absolutely not a morning person and I keep sleeping through alarms because I am not fully awake and press snooze loads of times. I've tried everything, different alarms, putting it on the other side of the room - I just get back in and fall asleep again. If I disable snooze then I just turn it off entirely and am late. I would love to break the snooze cycle!

I couldn't get up in a morning in winter without my lumie alarm. I've had it years so I imagine there's more sophisticated models out there now but honestly, I wake up so much better - and stay awake - with the light than I do over the alarm on my phone

I love my Dyson hairdryer. I have very thick, frizzy hair. The Dyson gets rid of a lot of the frizz that I would get with a normal hairdryer, meaning I don’t need to straighten it as much. It has also cut the time down that it takes to dry by 30%.

however, I wouldn’t bother with the Nural one. When it’s in Nural mode, it’s not hot enough to dry my hair so I always end up turning it off.

PepsiBook · 14/01/2026 12:53

Rono vac is absolutely one of the best inventions ever.
As is the hair Lazer remover.
Both literally changed my life for the better!

I8toys · 14/01/2026 12:53

Air Fryer, Soup Maker, Clothes steamer, Steam anything really

Never use the Robo vac. Its stored under the bed. Use my Kindle every day.

Sorry OP, can't help with the steam cleaner but mine would be a Kindle! I love reading and love holding a physical book but I'm almost certain I could read double the amount if I had a Kindle because it's much easier to get out to read for a bit, you don't even have to hold it if you don't want too! I also see physical books as a kind of trophy. But Kindles are quite pricey, and there's different versions now too. I've been debating this for about a year now.

I was the same!

I’m so glad I got the kindle! It’s so easy to pop into your bag and take with you. It’s definitely been one of my most favourite purchases ever! Battery lasts for weeks and week as well!

and the books are cheaper! I highly recommend!

I don’t miss real books at all

I have a kobo reader and the books are soooo cheap to buy !! 99p ! I used to buy loads oysical books and even on 3 for 2 not a good value !!

Needspaceforlego · 14/01/2026 12:54

Thanks for heads up on steam cleaner, I'll give that a miss.
I do like the steam mop though.

I do like my dyson hair dryer bought on sale.
And my robot vaccum also a sale purchase. Just need to tidy up and off he goes.

My wants are a airwrap and a handheld hoover thing mainly for the car

You can try out the Kindle interface by downloading the free Kindle for phone app.
Mine is Olaplex. I have dry brittle hair but a Superdrug protein treatment fried it 8 years ago si I’m scared to try it. The Aldi dupes have done nothing for my hair.

Don't bother !!! If your hair is ok it doesn't need anything

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 14/01/2026 12:55

Mine is handheld/cordless stick vacuums.

I have a full size shark which is mega.
But whilst it's good on hard floors, it struggles with bits of stray cat litter or bigger bits of dirt, so I'm endlessly stopping to use the hose to get bits, then when I think I've got them and can go back to pushing the hoover around, I find more.

Is a cordless likely to be any better with bigger bits on a hard floor?

Ineedcoffeenow · 14/01/2026 12:55

Oh and don’t get the Dyson cordless straighteners. The battery only lasted 30 mins and degraded quickly so it got to the point that it only worked for 2 minutes before needing charging. I went back to cloud 9.

Robot vacuum
Another set of headphones to join my ever growing collection
The courage to donate about half my clothes as I don’t use them

I have a robot vacuum and think it's great; saying that we have 2 teens (no longer messy like little ones) and no pets. I don't think it would be suitable if you had lots of dog hairs etc

An e-bike
My health is a bit shit now so I never cycle any more and I miss it.
But would i use it? Would it go on fire? Would i look stupid on it? What if run out for battery? What if I'm actually just lazy?

To have an e bike it’s fantastic. So easy and you can cover a lot of miles. Batteries are long lasting and you know how much charge you have before you leave home. No idea why you think they would go in fire?

rainbowstardrops · 14/01/2026 11:06

Shark or Dyson hairdryer. Are they really any better than my standard hairdryer? I have fine, brittle hair.
Not sure I can justify the cost.

Not worth it in a stylist and the best is a parlux !! The alyon light

Isanyonereallyanonymous · 14/01/2026 12:57

Oh - also how about the window vac /window cleaner gadgets. Worthwhile?

AltitudeCheck · 14/01/2026 12:58

thenightsky · 14/01/2026 12:45

I've got Musicozy ones too. I really need to wash the band part, but I'm scared to pull all the bits out in case I can't get them back in again.

It's a bit fiddly but doable... that reminds me, mine is overdue a wash!

My husband bought me the Dyson Supersonic for Christmas and it is AMAZING! So fast and dries really well. Would never have spent that myself though!😀

I use the Kindle app on my phone. It has rendered my Kindle obsolete.

coronafiona · 14/01/2026 13:00

Botox
robot hoover
I have an old kindle that I really like. It saves so much space for book storage. I also have BorrowBox from our local library.

Nope for some reason mine leaves streaks on the windows.
Its good for our glass garden table. But I wouldn't buy one just for that.

SiobahnRoy · 14/01/2026 13:01

I held off buying Cloud 9 wide straighteners for ages, wish I hadn't waited so long!
Now wondering if I need a Bosch Electric Cleaning Brush, also keep almost buying a new epilator as mine is ancient.

Philips Lumea. I like the idea but it's a lot of money to waste if it doesn't work.

They are brilliant of you have dark hair and pale skin. A family member used to work in their manufacturing. We are ginger so not for us.

I love mine i just buff out streaks with kitchen roll and you don't need as much of the solution.

I have both and use them constantly. I would like to upgrade the steamer to one that uses suction but even my little cheapy one is great, and the kindle is just so convenient for reading on the go or in bed with its screen light, and as comfortable for the eyes as reading a book. My original Paperwhite lasted 10 years before I upgraded last year, and only then because I'd damaged the screen.

My "thing" is a Ninja Creami. I love ice cream but struggle to get flavours I really like as I don't eat chocolate, and would like to be able to use ice cream as a way of eating more protein. But it does seem like a lot of precious space to dedicate to a single use appliance, we don't have much freezer space either for pre-freezing the bowls, and it seems a bit gimmicky.

Not directly helpful, I know, but: I have a cheap little Aldi Ambiano ice cream maker (I'm in Germany) that only makes a pint. Bought by DH, who is a middle-of-Lidl maven and loves ice cream. At first I thought "Pshaw", but then I realised the size is perfect for trying out flavours and using up odds and ends like one squishy banana (with nut butter and mascarpone/quark for your protein, plus condensed milk, cream, Greek yoghurt or custard), and there are only two of us although one of us is an ice-cream demolition machine so we finish the ice cream before it goes all icy. No bowls to freeze, either. It's not superfast but it really does the job. The specific brand may not be available in UK, but maybe look out for a cheapie/second-hand similar model and give it a go?

Have a look on Vinted. I got my husband a bargain deal on a second hand one!
