I have loads of original art which i buy when i see something i like.
A lot of my art now is work by my DS, mainly linoncut prints. He is amazingly good at them. He recently gave me a 7 block lino cut print of Polzeath. For our 25th wedding annivesary. Its small, but a little gem...

Too many...when my Polish lodger has a quiet period for jobs, he stays in his room painting..acrylics...fish..flowers...all bright colours...then he hangs them on the upstairs walls which is nice. He is very talented but isnt keen on people coming over to see his work and wont even discuss selling any !

We are lucky my husband’s grandfather was an artist, so we have a lounge wall of his work. A mix of landscapes, portraits and surrealism.

I love the bottom left painting in the first picture!

It’s great isn’t it? pretty sure London, with Bedlam, now imperial war museum.
Unsigned, bought with the one above it for I think, around £100.

I need a bigger house, I've no walls left to put more art on... 😩

spiderlight · 12/01/2026 23:27

Yes. Several beautiful paintings and drawings by my very talented MIL, plus some originals by other artists. They aren't big expensive pieces but they make me very happy.

Lightwell · 12/01/2026 23:29

To show off, we've got two small line drawings from someone who subsequently became stratospherically famous and now they are worth about a third of our house. We have to have a special alarm thing and security frame, they are in a very discreet back room.

Do you still enjoy them? I hope so 😊

Yellowcakestand · 12/01/2026 23:36

I have a few Soohie Long originals. Local artist whose work i love. Bright colours

atiaofthejulii · 12/01/2026 23:48

Yes, I have a mixture of prints and originals (mostly local artists), plus paintings and lino prints and textile pieces and pottery (and probably more) that friends have made, some of my daughter's embroidery, etc. Love seeing it every day. Count myself very lucky to have so many things made by people I love.

To the person who asked where to buy -

  • Local art trails are great
  • once you tap into a local network of artists you will find all sorts of talented people, who often have open studios or similar
  • Affordable Art Fair have a few sales in London each year. There used to be something similar called Contemporary Art Fair but they don't seem to be still going. But if you search for similar in your area you will probably find something
  • auctions for older works - I have a friend who does lots of buying and selling antiques and I'd love to go to an auction

We bought our retirement home a couple of years ago and wfh/ spend most weekends there/ give the boomerang kids some breathing space. It’s very undone up, a real bolthole and I’ve filled the walls with job lots watercolours from a local auction house. Literally 40 paintings for £300 in 8 different lots.

Roseberry in South London and Lotts Road. We’ve also bought at Christie’s and Sotheby’s for low hundreds.
The 40 paintings for £300 was an out of London auction house, I’ve visited several over the years and you can always pick up for pennies.

Not a thing. No art, clocks, nothing. Just bare painted walls. A wee ND foible. Things hanging on walls make me uncomfortable and edgy because I see them as needless clutter.

Foggytree · 13/01/2026 00:12

Yes a couple of originals, a few prints - 2 of which are faded and need replacing.

2 ceramic pieces too.
Still love them.

7catsisnotenough · 13/01/2026 00:15

Loads of art - a mix of prints and original pieces.
I've learned to buy what I like when I see it, it doesn't have to be expensive, but it needs to "speak" to me...
Lots of Mid Century prints mixed with Mid Century originals and modern Mid Century style original pieces...
My go to is buy what you like when you see it, don't wait because it will be gone, if you love it and can afford it buy it!!

can relate to this .. reason started the thread.. don't think its ND is it 🤔 at moment my place looks clean & fresh with nothing on walls but I've recently fallen in love with Angela Harding's illustrations now considering whether to get just one print of hers..its nature & animals; two of my faves ❤️...and break habit of a lifetime

Two paintings of local landmarks 1930s so the areas have changed considerably.

Giraffehaver · 13/01/2026 00:42

Yes from my friend who is a professional artist. I love it

CoastalCalm · 13/01/2026 00:49

5 pieces of original art which I love hopefully to be joined by some of my own some day

LetticiaFitzgerald · 13/01/2026 00:59

No. I don’t like messy visual clutter. I might put up one or two in the future, but don’t want to live in an art gallery.

BeaTwix · 13/01/2026 00:59

Yes. I’m going to sound pretentious but I decided a long time ago to only support photographers or printmakers.

I’ve bought some from big name galleries but increasingly I buy direct as I now know whose stuff I like. One was a gift from a primary school friend who is a very talented professional printmaker.

Am obviously doing something right as I visited a friends house recently to find they had bought a print from one of my favourite artists after staying with me!!

Oh and I also have framed kids art. A treasured angel made by my little sister when she was about 4 and a rather fetching guardsman outside Buckingham palace drawn by my pseudonephew who is now 20 and achingly cool but still very flattered his picture is in my hallway!

mondaytosunday · 13/01/2026 01:54

Yes every room has art. Here in the living room a very large abstract landscape by a Scottish artist, a piece be an English sculptor which I absolutely adore and two ceramic pieces by different artists (one was on Great Pottery Throwdown)! More paintings in the kitchen/dining room and one by my grandmother in the loo. Art going up the stairs, one Aboriginal work we brought back from Australia, and works by my children (my DD is very talented).
I never tire of them, and love looking at them. They add so much character to a room. My children’s artwork reminds me of different stages of their lives. Most of the paintings I know the artists, or met them when I bought. I also have about a dozen pieces in storage as I moved from a house twice the size of my current home. I also have a bedroom rug I commissioned as a Christmas present to myself from a Scottish fibre artist who lives in my road. It makes me smile every time I walk on it.
