Because in my mind I am still 37, it hasn't occurred to me that actually, this year, there is a load of free shit I can get when I'm 60!

Pls inform me of what I can benefit from. Buses? Trains?

Turning 60 soon. Did we always use the word Senior in the UK, and did it have such a well established cut-off point?

I’ve just checked for bus pass and you have to be of state pension age.

Womaninhouse17 · 10/01/2026 08:28

Not buses yet. Not trains. In fact, very little until you're pension age. Carry on enjoying your relative youth!

RosesAndHellebores · 10/01/2026 08:34

To answer your question @WinterGardening probably a sprinkling of discrimination. I can't think of anything else but am intrigued about the Boots Points.

At 65, I'm gobsmacked that I'm no longer charged for prescriptions and eye-tests because I'm still working. It seems wrong it isn't means tested.

I always said that when I was 60, I'd buy myself a little two seater convertible. However, when the time came a little arthritis and an elderly mother who needs my help sometimes, prevented it.

you get a discount with either the camping and caravan club or the the camping and motor home club for overnight stays.

and if you fall and get an injury you can be referred to the falls clinic ( I fell over hiking a big mountain and hurt my wrist and the GP and I had a giggle about needing to refer me. I declined )

and can apply for over 55s housing . Enjoy

hohahagogo · 10/01/2026 08:43

Prescriptions and an annual eye test. Nothing else from the government but some private places give discounts from 60, varies though. Bus pass etc is state pension age now

hohahagogo · 10/01/2026 08:48

I should add most tourist attractions we’ve been to are 65 these days, don’t get excited. Oh and as the buses are crap here we have to drive everywhere so not getting a free pass isn’t a big deal, I think we should be able to choose petrol tokens instead of a bus pass if we don’t live in a city (mines a town but you can’t go to anywhere but the city by bus, not even to b&q you need to drive)

Wait, what. Free HRT? I have only been vaguely thinking about HRT. That is so cool.

You should have been on HRT for at least 10 years. Wards off a huge number of old age things ( heart problems, osteoporosis, dementia) go and get it quick.

purser25 · 10/01/2026 09:05

You should get your bowel cancer test kit!

RaininSummer · 10/01/2026 09:29

I don't know about the NT discount so will try to get that sorted out. Been a member for years.

10% off Iceland on Tuesdays!!

Holidaytrees · 10/01/2026 11:42

Your pension if you haven’t already I’m collecting my hard earned pension at 55 though.

You might get a discount in your local gym or swimming pool if you ask

Ah that wonderful distinction between "falling over" and "having a fall" 😂

WinterGardening · 10/01/2026 11:46

Thanks everyone! I'll read through this thread later. Am off to the gym 😇

I'm going to be 60 too.

I need to decide how to celebrate, my 50th was in a Michelin stared restaurant, 40th London to see a play and a night in a nice hotel, 30th on a motorbike in Western Australia. Any suggestions?

I already get free prescriptions and eye tests, I already receive a pension (ill health retirement)I have a disabled bus pass but I'm interested in looking up discounts, it hadn't occurred to me.

Haemorrhoids and wrinkles.

Where are you OP?
In my London borough I will get 50% off gym or golf membership at the council run facilities when I turn 60 shortly.

That's good - I'm also in a London borough and we have to wait until 66 to get discounts at our local leisure centre....
(and I'm assuming it will go up to 67 when the pension age goes up ......)

I’m in the1966 Club too - not till October though so I’ve got aaaaaaages yet. Grin

I was sort of banking on having free dentist at 60, seems I’ve totally made that one up.Confused

Nos4r2 · 10/01/2026 12:30

Yeah you get a lot of stuff free when your 60 if you live in London, but anywhere else you have to wait for retirement age. It's funny but I think its unfair because food, electricity, gas, water are all the same price no matter where you live.
