What are you wearing around the house to keep warm?

Whatanewyear26 · 09/01/2026 19:12

I am currently wearing jeans, knee high thermal socks underneath, a thermal long sleeve t shirt under a big jumper and a bobble hat!

It’s a bit chilly when I sit down so I am busy tidying up and cooking. I will be going upstairs to watch tv later as it’s warmer up there and I’ll be keeping the bobble hat on!

Are you cold in your house and what are you wearing?

After several years of freezing to death I’ve had enough and decided to suck the bills up. However, I don’t put the heating on higher than 18 and we use Oodies largely (proper branded ones which are so very warm). Tonight I’ve got a big cardi on over my pjs.

We suck it up here but we have an insulated house so put the heating on and it stays warm. We have a huge fake fire in the lounge but looks like a real one and it heats and air conditions. We blast it up to 25 degrees (takes about 10 minutes) and that is lovely and toasty for 3-4 hours in there. Dogs love it.

Holidaytrees · 10/01/2026 13:09

I wouldn’t wear a hat in doors that is pretty hardcore. Outside I have a heated gillet (recommended by another MN user who I know in real life), heated socks (this year’s Christmas present from DH) and rechargeable hand warmers. Why the heck would you be cold? I have an autoimmune disease so when I’m cold I’m really really cold and can’t warm up so I stay warm!

HelpMeGetThrough · 10/01/2026 13:26

I’m not wearing it, but central heating, if push comes to shove and I’m feeling a bit chilly but nobody else is, I’ll put a hoodie on, if it just me here, the heating goes up.

lacquershimmer · 10/01/2026 13:27

Thermal leggings and close fitting long sleeve thermal top. Flannel shirt. Long fleece. Sheepskin boots. I’m warm as toast.

I loved mine, until my dog chewed through the wires. Dog free to any home, if anyone's interested.

Depending on the make, you can just get a replacement cable to plug in! I did this when mine got damaged, it cost £20 which was much cheaper than buying a new throw.

LibertyLily · 10/01/2026 16:19

Woolly tights and socks, fingerless gloves, long-leeved thermal top, jumper, ankle length denim skirt. I'm currently home alone so have retreated to bed with two hot water bottles, 13.5 tog down duvet and a fleece-lined faux fur throw. Feeling incredibly snug!

As we're renovating, we've not had a boiler (or any hot water other than boiled in a kettle 🙄) since last Spring and although we have a wood burner in the kitchen, plus a couple of electric heaters, I'm not wasting those on me.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 10/01/2026 16:23

Oodie, fleecy trousers, fluffy socks. Underneath I've got a woolly top. No heating on in my house but it's a mid terrace and my neighbours must have their heating on to nuclear levels because it's quite warm indoors. I just get cold when I sit down with the laptop.

Also got a heated blanket at the ready in case it gets colder (and because the dog likes snuggling underneath it).

2dogsandabudgie · 10/01/2026 16:30

Jumper, jeans and woolly socks. Heating on all day until 10pm set at 20 degrees and then 16 degrees for overnight. Hate a cold house.

JBJ · 10/01/2026 16:35

Mainly in just a T-shirt and jeans, but Im perimenopausal! Dressing gown if it gets chilly. My feet are always blooming freezing though, so wearing Foozie slipper socks.

cinnamongirl123 · 10/01/2026 16:48

A zipped wearable blanket. And about 4 layers underneath. Sadly I have to wear this pretty much all winter - heating on, costs a fortune but house never gets warm 😫
This is one of the best things I’ve ever bought though - they used to have it in other colours, mine is grey

This thread is batshit! Good old Mumsnet, and the competitive 'my house is the coldest' and 'I wear 56 layers, and NEVER put the heating on' posts! 😆

Plus the unnecessary microscopic detail. You could just say "three layers" - we don't need to know the brand of your thermal vest (or where you ordered it from), whether your camisole vest is "strappy" or that your wrist warmers are cashmere, or what specific shop you got your socks from. It's just a pair of socks - it doesn't matter whether they are fluffy ones from Primark or hand-knitted angora made by peasant women in the Andes, they're still socks.

mindutopia · 10/01/2026 18:02

Jeans, long sleeved top, cardigan and a scarf, and normal socks, sometimes wear a woolly hat. We live in an old farmhouse that’s about 14-15c, but I don’t particularly feel like I need to wear anything too wild as I tend to stick to the warmest room.

Actually it really does make a difference, synthetic fabrics don't keep you warm in the way wool or silk do. Socks aren't "just socks" - there are socks that will keep your feet warm and socks that will make your feet sweat and therefore make your feet cold. The fabric does make a big difference.

So yeah, specifying exactly what you're wearing on a thread titled "What are you wearing around the house to keep warm?" is quite a reasonable thing to do. It was obvious from the thread titledwhat was going to be in the thread so maybe don't read it if you find it annoying.

MuddlingThroughLife · 10/01/2026 19:35

My normal long leg, short sleeved pj's and slippers. A cwtchy blankie for watching tv/reading.

UniquePinkSwan · 10/01/2026 19:37

Normal clothes. I put the heating on if I’m cold. I refuse to sit in 10 layers in the house

Our heating is on constant (other than overnight) at the moment but we’ve had about 12 inches of snow! I can’t remember ever seeing snow like it, or ever feeling this cold other than January in Oslo. Really hoping it goes away soon ❄️

burblish · 10/01/2026 23:25

Amazing how some people can't fathom that not everyone feels/handles cold to the same extent, and not everyone can afford to have their heating on full blast 24 hours a day.

I've been wearing either long pyjamas or a long sleeved t-shirt and joggers, vest top underneath if I'm very cold, zip-up extra long wearable blanket or gorgeously thick velvety dressing gown, double layer slipper socks, wrist warmers. I have electric heated throws on the sofas and beds for extra cosy warmth.

I agree. It's a bit tone deaf.

Unfortunately there are usually far too many threads on MN from posters who really don't feel the cold and who give the impression of being morally superior about it, and make those who do feel the cold easily feel like lesser human beings (my BIL does it all the time). The "just put on another jumper" posters don't understand that when you are really chilled to the bone another jumper simply doesn't cut it,

As an aside, wouldn't you feel warmer getting dressed rather than wearing pyjamas?

vanillalattes · 11/01/2026 16:27

I just wear normal clothes.

Right now, thermal leggings, socks, a t-shirt and a jumper. I sit under a blanket on the sofa though.

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 11/01/2026 16:29

Wool socks, skiing under layers, pyjama pants, tracksuit bottoms, vest, long sleeve T, fleece, oodie, hot water bottle.

Its 9C in my house because the insulation is shit. I’m so cold.

Heating makes my house go from 9C to 11C lol. That’s it. And it costs £2 an hour. I hate this new house

Echobelly · 11/01/2026 16:34

A navy Silentnight rip-off fleece slanket over everything. Does the job

madaboutpurple · 11/01/2026 18:09

My DH spent a year many years ago with students in the Netherlands and they advised him to put his dressing gown on over his clothes. We do that now and it does keep us warm.

I think I have seen that heated gilet advertised on social media, and I must say i am interested! Is it worth investing in? I imagine it to be like having a hot water bottle strapped to you!

PeonyPatch · 11/01/2026 18:30

Can anyone on this thread recommend some decent thermals? I need some for now but also for Budapest next month!
