What are you wearing around the house to keep warm?

Whatanewyear26 · 09/01/2026 19:12

I am currently wearing jeans, knee high thermal socks underneath, a thermal long sleeve t shirt under a big jumper and a bobble hat!

It’s a bit chilly when I sit down so I am busy tidying up and cooking. I will be going upstairs to watch tv later as it’s warmer up there and I’ll be keeping the bobble hat on!

Are you cold in your house and what are you wearing?

Gotta love a competitive my-house-is-colder-than-yours and who-wears-the-most-layers-of-thermal-clothing-bobblehats-and-scarves-and-gloves-in-the-house thread! 😆

Dear me, it must be like an ice cave in your house if you're wearing all that @Whatanewyear26

I am currently wearing jeans, knee high thermal socks underneath, a thermal long sleeve t shirt under a big jumper and a bobble hat!

Who wears a bobble hat in the house?! 😂

Mind you, some of the layers of thermal clothing some posters claim they wear around the house suggests they live in VERY cold houses. Maybe try lighting a fire, or popping the central heating on now and again!

I am all for money saving, but I'm not sitting in a freezing cold house! And we DON'T have the heating on all day. We have it on for half hour every 4-5 hours or so. The house stays warm for ages, as we have very good insulation. I think some posters on here need some lessons on how to insulate their homes!

What is it with these competitive heating and competitive 'my house is the coldest' threads? 😆

Oh, and I wear, a pair of slippers, a t-shirt, pyjama bottoms, (with undies,) and a pyjama top or a cardigan (unbuttoned.) Nice and warm I am! And so is DH. (And we're not youngs 'uns. Almost 60!)

Jeezitshard · 09/01/2026 21:35

We live in a 1950s detached 4 bed home. It has all new windows, new central heating, and loads of loft insulation - but…it’s solid wall construction - can’t have cavity insulation and it’ll cost between 20k-30k to put external insulation - though that’s the plan at some point. Until then, I’ve got the heating in all day. The warmest I can get the lounge is 20 but the north facing kitchen/ diner is more like 16/17. So yes we have lots of layers on and the heated throw etc. I work from home so can’t be cold. But it’s currently costing 10-15 a day in gas. So to the PP who laughs and I assume lives in a well insulated new build - I’m very pleased for you but lots of us have older/ character homes that need a bit more help to heat up and stay warm.

IfyouStealMySunshine · 09/01/2026 21:37

im all for layering but if you’re wearing a bobble hat indoors you need a better job to afford the heating or move house. Just miserable.

I tend to wear leggings, socks and a hoody and pop my dressing gown over the top if I’m feeling chilly when working from home stuck at the desk.

This is where I build up a credit in my energy account in the summer rarely putting the gas on so that when winter comes I can pop the heating on guilt free.

If I was on benefits/state pension then fair enough I would be more economical but as it stands right now I have children in the house and I work full time then I will put the heating on guilt free.

SparklyBrickViper · 09/01/2026 21:38

Thermal base layer top and leggings from Lidl. £4.99 each. Absolutely brilliant.

Whatanewyear26 · 09/01/2026 21:39

Well that’s why I started the thread! It’s so unusually cold that I have been wearing a hat indoors which I have never done before and it does help! Yes I have the heating on but it’s still cold.

Our heating has been on all day and the hall thermostat is just hovering around 19c. Living room feels a bit warmer, but we're both sat with pj's and dressing gowns and even the dogs are snuggling closer than they normally would.

We're on bulk LPG so it goes off overnight. Can't wait until morning Hmm

the80sweregreat · 09/01/2026 21:45

I just wear layers. Love some thick socks

TwillTrousers · 09/01/2026 21:45

DH is bald and has a little hat he wears sometimes but not if anyone can see.
I have a fleece hoodie and I put the hood up if it’s really cold.

This thread is batshit! Good old Mumsnet, and the competitive 'my house is the coldest' and 'I wear 56 layers, and NEVER put the heating on' posts! 😆

I agree 😆😆. My house is old and draughty but I refuse to sit around shivering in my 60s and I find it uncomfortable to wear loads of layers. My heating has been on 24 hours a day at around 25 degrees for the last few days and will stay on until it gets a bit warmer.

the80sweregreat · 09/01/2026 21:54

Someone bought me a snood once. The neck is annoying , but honestly it’s like wearing actual central heating ! It is so hot , you can sweat out pounds wearing that.

GellerYeller · 09/01/2026 21:55

WFH earlier someone apologised to me for appearing in a dressing gown for a meeting! Although they were wearing a proper jumper underneath.
I put the heating on for an hour early afternoon then again around 5. Usually… Today I lit the fire by noon.
I’m in thermal socks, leggings and a long sleeve, under a chunky wool jumper, jeans, and an ankle length cardigan. With very old Ugg boots, and a massive scarf.
I’ve got a heated throw but I it’s disappeared with a chilly teen upstairs.

FettleOfKish · 09/01/2026 21:58

Pyjama bottoms, a long sleeve T-shirt and a thick baggy short sleeve T-shirt over it. I’ll remove one top layer before bed. Socks and slippers. Under a blanket on the couch and toasty. I grew up in a FREEZING house (we’d often wake up to the toilet bowl frozen and condensation on the insides of the windows frozen) so I won’t have it as an adult. We’re lucky to be able to afford to heat to a comfortable level, albeit only the lounge and bedroom and it’s completely off when we’re out and lowered to 17/18 once we’re in bed. There’s a lot of other life expenses I’d give up before I didn’t adequately heat our home.

Agree with PPs though, jeans are useless for warmth. Switch them to flannel pyjama bottoms or joggers with fleece lining.

Missymarple · 09/01/2026 21:59

I live in the north of Scotland and after a week of snow, and thanks to Mounjaro, for the first time ever I am properly cold. I am wearing my trusty Aldi 4.99 thermal top under a thicker jumper, thick socks and Primark fleece lined leggings ( which said £7 on the label but scanned through at £5 and are an absolute joy).

Chinsupmeloves · 09/01/2026 22:01

My pj's bottoms, 2 pairs of socks, top, fleece jumper over then add oodie if extra cold!

We have lots of blankets for when we events down.

Last year during menopause I was so hot all the time!

Giggorata · 09/01/2026 22:03

One of my full length oodies with harem trousers and dress/tunic underneath, along with socks, bootee slippers and, on some days, fingerless gloves.
I haven’t switched on the heated throw yet this winter, as the oodie does such a good job.
i have also got my grunge wizard black fleece hooded dressing gowns standing by, if I need them.

TheNameWasOnceChosen · 09/01/2026 22:04

Some of us can't afford heating. Some of us can't just move house.

I've had a stroke, have MS, have epilepsy and COL4A1. I don't have any money left for extra bills.

I'm in bed, naked with a winter duvet and a blanket. So snuggly. I'm in the house alone.

NotnowMildrid · 09/01/2026 22:06

Nordic socks
Leggings
Thick fleece
Roaring wood-burner
It is baking hot in here - too hot, but cooler upstairs

Waitingfordoggo · 09/01/2026 22:15

@Zov I am using the heating but my house never gets super warm (it’s great in the summer!) It’s an old house and the room I spend most of my time in is big with north facing windows. You’ll just have to take my word for it that I need my oodie on despite also having the heating on 🤷🏼‍♀️

And as has been pointed out by others- not everyone can afford to use their heating very much.

It’s surprising that you assume everyone is in the same situation and type of house as you.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 09/01/2026 22:17

Tights, long sleeved thermal top (tucked into tights), leggings, jumper. If I'm really cold I will put my joggers on top of that, and sometimes put DHs work fleece on top but not today because it needs washed (smells like sweaty man). I don’t really like having the heating on I feel like it dries me out, I have it on in the kids room and in the living room when they’re playing.

Crucible · 09/01/2026 22:23

I have a mat for my dogs which is warm when it is pressured. When my butt gets really cold sitting too long I sit on it. Dogs come first though.

HorrorFan81 · 09/01/2026 22:26

Thermal leggings
Two pairs socks
Vest
Thermal long sleeve top
Chunky jumper
Fingerless gloves if I am working
Sometimes my Black Watch wool wrap (channeling my inner Claudia W)

Usually found under a heated blanket too

morbidcuriosity · 09/01/2026 22:28

Right now. . Thermal leggins, jogging bottoms. . Thermal long sleeve top, t shirt, all under a heated throw. I did have a hoodie on earlier too but thats come off now. .

Edit.. and thermal socks..

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 09/01/2026 22:32

Thick leggings
Vest top/ thermal one if below freezing outside
Long sleeved top
Jumper
Dressing gown
Socks and slippers

My flat is always around 18.

Kitterkitkat · 09/01/2026 22:45

@Zov I've still got my hat on, forgot to take it off when I got in.

Aside from that, 3 layers, leggings and jeans, socks

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 09/01/2026 22:58

Today I WFH and had no meetings so I wore my about the house clothes, joggers, thermal vest, long sleeve t and a hoodie, with socks and wool slippers. Only my hands were cold, I didn’t need my fan heater in the office and the heating was off until 4pm. The house stays between 20 with heating on and 17 with it off, so it is never really cold.
On meeting/smarter days or if I am planning on leaving the house I wear a wool jumper and jeans as my top layer.
I have a heated throw but haven’t needed it yet this year. There are blankets in the lounge but you have to fight with a cat if you want to use them.
I typically go to bed at 9 to relax and watch TV and am really warm under my duvet, blanket and cat even though I am only wearing a summer nightdress.

I am always grateful that we could afford to insulate the house and that we can afford heating.
