These absolutely wonderful people are giving up a week of annual leave and coming to help me and DH to do some work on our house abroad.
We are paying for flights, transfers etc and all food.
Im planning on doing all food either buffet style or bbq depending.
I want to take care of their every need however small or different to ours they are.
Ive got each person, a face flannel, and a towel. Toiletries, shampoo, etc
What else do I need?
Tell me what you personally would need, its going to be a hard graft week.
The job that needs doing is around €35000 which we don't have, every one doing the work with us is cutting costs including travel and food to around €15000.
So I have more gratitude than I can ever expeess and I want them to go home glad they came to help, rather than tiny hiccups (wrong food/not enough food etc) to send them home annoyed they even bothered.
I will consider all, what good do you want?
Tv in rooms or no? Tell me everything....Go

You have already received lots of good advice. Curious to know how you managed to find 10 people who are all free at the same time and willing to work in your house for nothing.

Not for nothing- free holidays for life!

TeeBee · 09/01/2026 18:43

I'd have a little bar area so they can help themselves to drinks and snacks at any time. I'd definitely want lots of decent crisps.

Helpfullnelly · 09/01/2026 18:43

This is the offending space. The angles are not available on that photo, but its not level, its on an incline, it all needs leveling into 2 flat areas, one high, one low

Oh ok, you said it was super hot so assumed summer.

Obviously we’ll need some before and after pics!!

Have enjoyed reading this! Sounds lovely, what a nice bunch you all sound! Bet it’ll be really satisfying all working together to create a fab new space ☺️
Good luck

Not everyone drinks wine, (I don't) so plenty of squash and fizzy drinks?
Plenty of loo roll!

Squash isn't a thing, so I can do fizzy drinks or juice x

Sounds like they might need workboots. Either make sure they bring their own or get some in , in the right sizes. If they are digging the garden and using tools etc, they shouldn't be doing it in flipflops, their feet need to be protected.
Also have hats or caps available to protect from the sun, and hair ties.
Will they need gardening or work gloves?

A couple of yoga mats, muscle rollers and massage guns to ease tired muscles. Maybe a voucher for a professional massage as a thank you gift for when they return home.

I would want:

Privacy and to not be challenged when I need alone time
A comfortable bed
A warm bedroom
A glass of wine a couple of evenings per week
Healthy food: fresh vegetables and fruit, carbs, protein, in quantities I don't sense are rationed
Access to tea and coffee
Some local produce
Clean sheets and towels
Unrationed hot water
A token thank you gift of local produce to take home (some pastries, wedge of cheese, bottle of wine)
The pleasure of your company!

Very cool, OP!

I'd echo all this and good WiFi.

I think the massage idea is particularly good if they're going to be doing hard labour. If it's not ridiculously expensive and you think it would be appreciated then having a couple of masseuses come over each night when you're done for the day and give a couple of 45 minute massages each. Won't get everyone every day, but should manage a massage each at some point. They're doing the garden so a hot tub might be out of the question, but if you can swing it (a portable on the drive with a pop up tent shielding from the neighbours?), it would probably be well used at the end of a tiring day.

On this vein, plenty of deep heat.

Also, make sure your tools are in good nick. Nothing more soul destroying than volunteering your time and effort to have it disrespected with poor tools so you can't really do the job.

RiverRed · 09/01/2026 19:07

A couple of spare phone chargers - android/iPhone. Someone always forgets theirs or may need an additional one, handy in the kitchen/communal area to top up while they’re on the go. Perhaps a battery pack too in case anyone doesn’t have one or has forgotten theirs. Good luck with your project - what a fab family you have!

FollowSpot · 09/01/2026 19:13

Access to cold drinks on a help themselves basis
Ditto snacks: fruit bowl, biscuits, nuts or whatever
Maybe get loads of ice lollies for the freezer? (Just thinking about what you say about heat)
Have a stock of first aid stuff for cuts, grazes ,stings, blisters plus indigestion stuff, Deep Heat, paracetamol etc
Have a stock of sunscreen, insect repellent

Outdoor shade: parasols if no trees, for rest breaks.

Simonjt · 09/01/2026 19:13

Check the travel insurance you are buying each person carefully, some consider DIY to be a risky activity and don’t cover injuries resulting from it.

BetterWithPockets · 09/01/2026 19:16

NRTFT, but maybe a towelling robe and house slippers they can use after a shower/around the house (we do this for guests and you can pick up both relatively cheaply from Amazon), and some nice towels/toiletries? You can use them again after they’ve gone, of course (unless they take a shine to them and take them home!). We bought these robes, if you’re interested: https://amzn.eu/d/9SRnFRu

Wonderwhyibother · 09/01/2026 19:20

Nothing to add on food/drinks etc but having grown up on building sites courtesy of my dad, I would suggest having regular breaks during the day to grab a drink and stretch. Manual labour like you are planning is back breaking and very sweaty so likely to de-hydrate quickly especially if you do get the highs of 22 degrees. It also give people chance to stretch out as it really is easy to over do it without realising (massage therapist like a pp said is a good idea) if people are not used to that type of work.

Rosecoffeecup · 09/01/2026 19:22

Ibuprofen and deep heat for the inevitable aches and pains on day 1

ToysRus56 · 09/01/2026 19:25

You all sound extremely cool ! Very inspiring

purplecorkheart · 09/01/2026 19:27

Loads of brilliant suggestions here. One of the things that crossed my mind was net laundry bags that can go into the washing machine. It makes sure that no ones clothes gets mixed up in the wash (if loads of people wear black primark knickers etc and personally I would feel uncomfotable with a stranger handling my worn underwear )and then many colours pegs so each person can be assigned a colour so again their clothes do not get mixed up.

Ineffable23 · 09/01/2026 19:29

Ice and ice lollies/ice cream. Lots of them!

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 09/01/2026 19:30

Is there a bath? If so sore muscles might appreciate some Epsom salts in the bathroom.

Personally I’d like copious amounts of tea and chamomile tea. DH would need lots of calories when doing hard graft in the form of healthy snacks (nuts, seeds, yogurts, olive oil for salads) or he’d drop weight (the bastard).

Chinsupmeloves · 09/01/2026 19:34

A fridge full of alcohol and soft drinks and a stash of snacks! Xxx

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 09/01/2026 19:38

Pasta, salad and chocolate cake is always a good start. Lots of wine helps, as does a comfy bed with plenty of blankets and pillows. Gratitude and friendship, however, is its own reward ❤️
