I have 10 guests coming for over a week...

These absolutely wonderful people are giving up a week of annual leave and coming to help me and DH to do some work on our house abroad.
We are paying for flights, transfers etc and all food.
Im planning on doing all food either buffet style or bbq depending.
I want to take care of their every need however small or different to ours they are.
Ive got each person, a face flannel, and a towel. Toiletries, shampoo, etc
What else do I need?
Tell me what you personally would need, its going to be a hard graft week.
The job that needs doing is around €35000 which we don't have, every one doing the work with us is cutting costs including travel and food to around €15000.
So I have more gratitude than I can ever expeess and I want them to go home glad they came to help, rather than tiny hiccups (wrong food/not enough food etc) to send them home annoyed they even bothered.
I will consider all, what good do you want?
Tv in rooms or no? Tell me everything....Go

Privacy.
Ok, love it, i will tell everyone that my and DH bedroom which is the largest is the quiet zone, and if the doors closed its a no go zone. I will make a sign.
Beer and wine in abundance, its cheap locally. Food will be served in restaurant measures, what's not eaten can roll over. Its Super hot, we have aircon in all bedrooms,
Fruit and veg, noted and will be included, it would likely have been anyway, but now its in my radar, so thankyou.
Tea and coffee no problem, in a tea fiend.

Edited

Why would they not go to their own room rather than yours if they want a bit of peace and quiet? Where is everyone sleeping?

If I'd travelled abroad (even with costs covered) and given up annual leave I'd want to have a day or maybe two half days to see the local area while I was there.

Its a 4 bed house, there's 3 doubles and 1 room with 4 bunks. So no-one will have their own room. None of them are couples.
Days off yes

Do you know them all personally, or did you get them from a volunteer site/agency?

Ah, that makes sense.

I'm impressed you've managed to round up ten separate willing helpers who are willing to give up their annual leave!

We know them personally, brothers, nephews, daughters, and some very good friends

Your'e very generous, OP! That's more than I'd expect, assuming they're friends and not just random volunteers. I'd absolutely be prepared in their circumstances to go on at least one big shopping trip and to contribute cash for some of the food. I know they're working hard, but they'd have to buy food at home regardless.

TVs in each room are OTT. Surely people will have laptops? (you do need to make sure there's good WiFi).
I think people can bring or get their own sunscreen and insect repellent (if someone knows they get bitten even out of season surely they'll bring their own anyway?)

I think for me I'd really like a welcome/take-home present including some tasty local produce, snacks and maybe a nice local soap or small luxury hand cream or something.

ThejoyofNC · 09/01/2026 17:41

Snacks!!

Im so utterly grateful, its beyond my dreams and as im such a laid back person I want to make their stay as comfortable as possible, and their needs and wants are paramount for that week.

Oh good! Have a friend who's used a lot of woofers and had a few nightmares, but you'll be grand. Enjoy!

Mauro711 · 09/01/2026 17:47

What a good idea! One thing I thought of, make sure you have a well stocked first aid kit. People will no doubt hurt themselves.

Vodkamartini3olives · 09/01/2026 17:48

I think you're over thinking it somewhat. If 10 people are willing to come help you out it tells me they are the type to muck in and go with the flow. They're not expecting a 4 star Hotel experience. I'd want plenty to eat, plenty to drink somewhere to sleep and somewhere to shower. You have great friends.

I think you're doing exactly the right thing by considering what will make everyone comfortable and planning to make their stay as enjoyable as possible.

It might be worth thinking though how to deal with any possible fall-outs, as that's a lot of people in a smallish space, sharing rooms, etc. I'd be happy to help a friend in this way, but as an introvert would find sharing a room quite challenging. Do you have any volatile personalities?

Also, this might sound odd, but how are you going to pace your displays of gratitude? If you are saying effusive thank yous to ten different people 375 times every day for every little thing they do, that's going to get tiring for everyone quite quickly!

Finally, I'm not sure what everyone will be doing (building? decorating?), but have you thought how you might deal with something going wrong, like a job not being done to your standards, or something in the house getting damaged? I'd have thought that's relatively likely with that number of people who are all presumably amateurs at whatever they will be doing.

TheTimeTravellersNiece · 09/01/2026 17:52

Lots of heavy duty hand cream, and arnica cream for sprains and bruises and aching backs. Make sure they have work gloves.

Love this post, duly noted.
Its gardening work, it needs digging out and leveling, paving etc. But due to location its all got to be done by hand, or eith petrol tools.
I will say thanks once, then feed the devil out of them. And bring beer.

Glad it was helpful! Wasn't sure if I was getting a bit carried away, but these are (some of) the things I would worry - or at least wonder - about in this situation. Having said that, I wouldn't describe myself as laid back (as you can probably tell!).

Oh, something else - sounds like there is potential for injury with that number of inexperienced people doing physical work, especially with power tools. Worth doing a risk assessment?

Can I come?! Will you make Gambas Pil Pil? With loads and loads of bread?!

Can I be nosy and ask what the project is they’ll be helping you with?!

Do you know what, it sounds to me like you’ve got lots of it covered!

Gambas pil pil is one of my go tos! Its amazing!
Bringing a spade and you can come.

Digging tons and tons of earth, moving it all around, making a level space to put a pool. Building pool and if there's time, decking a bit and flagging another bit.

Ive risk assessed it. Told them dont stab you feet, no drinking beer until the digging is over for the day.

They don't all know each other.

God, I'd hate to share a double bed or bunks with people I don't know! How will 10 people fit in 3 bedrooms (presuming you'll stay in yours?!)

I would fancy giving up annual leave to do digging though so maybe I'm a horrible person 😂

We are in southern Spain, but while it is really cheap to eat out, its just a meal, I will still have to put out all the food around it, so I do plan on taking them all out for a meal one night, but its easier to cook at home for those sort of numbers.
And its not coastal, or touristy, and a restaurant with a booking for 12, would be at least a 4 hour meal, if not more. Second issue is kitchens dont open until 9 maybe 8.30 , ok for me, but my guests might have starved to death and died by then. Maybe

Are you in the province of Murcia, Camposol, perhaps?
