These absolutely wonderful people are giving up a week of annual leave and coming to help me and DH to do some work on our house abroad.
We are paying for flights, transfers etc and all food.
Im planning on doing all food either buffet style or bbq depending.
I want to take care of their every need however small or different to ours they are.
Ive got each person, a face flannel, and a towel. Toiletries, shampoo, etc
What else do I need?
Tell me what you personally would need, its going to be a hard graft week.
The job that needs doing is around €35000 which we don't have, every one doing the work with us is cutting costs including travel and food to around €15000.
So I have more gratitude than I can ever expeess and I want them to go home glad they came to help, rather than tiny hiccups (wrong food/not enough food etc) to send them home annoyed they even bothered.
I will consider all, what good do you want?
Tv in rooms or no? Tell me everything....Go

We are in southern Spain, but while it is really cheap to eat out, its just a meal, I will still have to put out all the food around it, so I do plan on taking them all out for a meal one night, but its easier to cook at home for those sort of numbers.
And its not coastal, or touristy, and a restaurant with a booking for 12, would be at least a 4 hour meal, if not more. Second issue is kitchens dont open until 9 maybe 8.30 , ok for me, but my guests might have starved to death and died by then. Maybe

Go out for lunch instead? Break the day up a bit? Menu del dia times twelve.

Are you in the province of Murcia, Camposol, perhaps?

No, we are nowhere near the coastal.
Its near Granada, about 1 hrs 45 from Malaga airport

Absolutely perfect idea, Menu del dia is only €10 we could do that on a day off

Not everyone drinks wine, (I don't) so plenty of squash and fizzy drinks?
Plenty of loo roll!

Good point, I don't drink either so alcohol is not a 'reward' for me. Tea, coffee, lots of fresh limes/oranges or mint or both to add to drinking water, maybe the odd bottle of posh lemonade or something, would go down well with me.

Wow - such good value! That was one of my favourite things last time I visited Spain (although there were plenty of others!).

Also perhaps if some of your helpers like to cook they could do that instead of the heavy manual labour one or more days - on the principle that a change is as good as a rest.

MadinMarch · 09/01/2026 18:19

Ear plugs in case some people snore? Especially for the room with all the bunks...

Maddy70 · 09/01/2026 18:23

Just put shampoos etc in the bathrooms. They don't need Individual ones
Tvs aren't something you have lying around , they don't need one in their room
Catering is where you can excel , also have a ton of pizzas in for snacking , and make sure you have decent pillows :)

ultracynic · 09/01/2026 18:25

Have you got a means of cooling everyone down while they’re working? How about sprinklers or just a hose pipe with spray attachment. If I was flogging outside in the blazing sun, I’d be so grateful for a sprinkler and an ice pop!!

tipsyraven · 09/01/2026 18:25

Comfortable bed, decent shower, good food and plenty of cold drinks plus wine would be enough for me.

Plenty of snacks available. If they are doing physical work they will need fuel throughout the day.

crazeekat · 09/01/2026 18:29

Decent WiFi is totally essential. Even if u need to buy WiFi boxes for a week. Give them good wind down time on phones when they are in bed. tvs not really needed now but have a Netflix prime etc account for movies etc to relax.
keep food coming. If u can organise takeaway a few nights and have loads to offer. Alcohol. Loads but not enough to give them a phone in sick hangover lol
sweets candies.
if any females, give them a big body towel and a hair towel. If u can afford it a cheap dressing gown just for the females and wee slippers something to enjoy once out their shower at night.

lovely pillows.
a variety of painkillers.
nice night lightbulbs so they can chillax at night. A week is long to spend with people, if theyre rooms can be as relaxed as possible and calm it can help stop some arguments.
diy - good tools help. Using cheap crap eg paint brushes just do shit jobs and make folk moan like hell and feel their work is not up to scratch. So does cheap paint.
do the washing. Keep the old diy clothes for them and wash them clean at night for them to have clean in the morning if possible. Just little things like that.

You have already received lots of good advice. Curious to know how you managed to find 10 people who are all free at the same time and willing to work in your house for nothing.

nellly · 09/01/2026 18:32

A large box of things like chocolate bars/cereal bars/handy snacks etc.
I would get hungry between meals especially doing physical
Work and would not want to constantly ask you 😊

DappledThings · 09/01/2026 18:33

Are the plans really clear and anything you can do prior to their arrival done? I'd get really frustrated if I arrived and then it turned out we couldn't get properly started till day 3 because you hadn't actually worked out what needed to happen first or didn't have the right tools or something

helplessbanana · 09/01/2026 18:34

If they are coming from the UK - decent tea bags. 😁

TeeBee · 09/01/2026 18:35

TFImBackIn · 09/01/2026 16:41

They won't want a TV in their bedrooms - where would you get so many TVs from anyway? That's just a waste of money.

Agree. And don't most people have TV apps and Netflix/Prime on their phone these days anyway?

Plenty of warning, asked a year ago, asked if they would help, said dont answer now, text me next month with the answer, let them decide the dates as I can do any dates, promised lots of food and beer and free holidays for life

It’d be great to think of something to do together (for those who fancy) in the evenings, as it’s likely to be warm. If you can borrow a projector and have a suitable white blank wall, you could do outdoor cinema?

Me and DH are going in Feb to drop off tools, measure up and then we have a a contractor here doing a plan for us, day by day etc xx

Depends when the work is being done. It’s not always hot in Spain you know! If it’s being done in the next few weeks, the central heating will be on!

For me it would be vital the place was warm. I wouldn’t want to work in chunky jumpers etc so there would need to be good heating. Unless you’re somewhere hot of course!
