Things you have done to make your life better/calmer

PersephoneParlormaid · 09/01/2026 06:55

Ive just been reading a post where someone is talking about doing things, or stopping things, to make life easier and calmer, so I thought I’d ask what you have done to hopefully help and inspire others.
For me the loft being jammed packed was really weighing on my mind and causing low level stress for years. So a couple of years ago, in the spring when it’s cooler/warmer, I committed to cleaning it out. It was hard work but I was ruthless, and all that’s up there now is the kids toys and Xmas decorations. I can’t tell you how much happier it’s made me feel getting it done. I think it was reading about Swedish death cleaning that inspired me.
Another thing I do is regularly unsubscribe to emails, especially after Xmas. I couldn’t see the things I needed to see for all the crap in there.
Then I stopped sending Xmas cards. It surprising how many less you get when you don’t send them, so I assume those people didn’t want to send them to me eitner.
And I gave up drinking. It was affecting my sleep and making me so tired the day after. I honestly don’t miss it.
Finally, I say no. If I’m asked to do something I often say no straightaway and then think about it. If I decide to then do it that’s fine. Having a clear calendar with empty days to do nothing is bliss in my book.

The biggest recent changes that have benefited me:

I hid the AIBU and Relationships boards as they have become so stressful

I've massively reduced my daily to-do lists. In fact I don't have one! My new diary for this year has a page per day, spilt vertically between things with a time attached and an area for notes. I put a maximum of 4 smallish jobs on there (this is in addition to paid work and all the normal household stuff that I don't write down).

Longer term projects and ideas have gone onto a Word document, and if I have lots of fiddly things I spread them out in my diary over the coming week or fortnight.

I've felt so much lighter and more productive after letting go of a huge list hanging over me.

Finally cleared out that horrible cupboard in the kitchen where the condiments, jars, spices etc are kept. Some fool had put away a bottle of golden syrup upside down so it was a right mess. Dumped spices I never use, weird stuff used once and then forgotten about, rock-hard jars of cocoa etc.

When I was clearing my mum's house last year, I came across spices that were years out of date and one tub of chocolate vermicelli dated 1987. 🤣

Slightly later than that (first broadcast in 1991), Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren! Just been binging them all on ITV player after endlessly moaning about all the crap on the TV lately. I've enjoyed seeing so many actors I recognise and saying 'I can't believe how young they looked back then!'.

Talking pictures TV have started showing Z Cars from the beginning. Also the Man from UNCLE. I had forgotten how nice Robert Vaughan and David Mcallam were to look at.....

When I was going through a particularly dreadful stressful time and couldn't sleep, I emptied out my sock and underwear drawer then tidied it using the Marie Kondo method (everything neatly folded and placed on edge). That was 10 years ago and I still keep them like that. Every morning when I open the drawer I am faced with calm and order instead of mess and chaos - it's a nice way to start the day. Also giving up alcohol really reduced my stress and anxiety. We think it relaxes us but it really doesn't.

When I helped a friend clear out her spices, there were some jars that were so old they didn't even have a date on!

Moving to a new job in my local town so that I can walk to and from work. Has made such a difference to my life.

I sorted my loft out myself. After sending DH up for various things he claimed were definitely not there and discovering stuff I thought was missing wasn’t, I decided to take ownership.

I sat up there in lockdown and sorted it out. Sad as it sounds, it brings me joy. There’s a place for everything and I’m the one who goes up to get stuff or put things away. It’s great now everything is sorted and tidy. We binned, donated and sold stuff too so all the items are things we would want to
bring if we moved.

@PersephoneParlormaid& @AgedWalrus
Here are the main one-size clothing shops that I like. I have found many stylish, comfortable & affordable items. I hate having to decide what size clothing fits, having only one size makes my life much easier!
Meek Boutique: https://themeekboutique.co.uk/
Style Attic: https://thestyleattic.co.uk/
Moo Bou: https://moobou.co.uk/
Blush Boutique: https://www.blushboutiqueessex.co.uk/
Laundry B: https://www.laundryb.com/
Kit & Kaboodal: https://www.kitandkaboodal.com/
Bows Boutique: https://bowsboutiques.com/

(Note that I think none have free returns. If I need to return, normally I send by Royal Mail app, a QR code that my local Post Office prints, costs about £3.80.)

Honeysucklelane · 13/01/2026 17:26

I’ve left jobs that were making me unhappy.

Given up on toxic friendships I had kept nurturing for years. Stopped being a WhatsApp ‘punching bag’ for a ‘friend’ with a MH condition.

Think more before jumping in and agreeing or offering to help out random people / causes.

In an effort to reduce spending time on my phone, I now have a timer on my screen that shows how much time I've spent on it so far that day. I'm also trying to devote more time to my craft hobbies (knitting, crochet and spinning). I always say I don't have enough time, but when I realised how much time I was frittering away scrolling, I realised I do!

How does this work please?

MylipstickiscalledHugMe · 13/01/2026 17:38

Here's a serious one: I told chatGPT all the damaging things in my childhood that I've never told anyone, even xh, and asked it "Forgetting everything else you know about me, and without trying to be kind, objectively how bad was this?"

I was quite shocked by what it said and how accurately it predicted my resulting behaviour patterns.

Since then I've felt an enormous sense of validation, freedom and optimism that I've been searching for during 30+ years of self-help, endless counsellors, journalling, etc. For once, I feel absolutely no need to keep on searching for how to feel better, and I'm instinctively focusing on the future. Also I'm being good to myself in so many ways without any effort.

I know it's not a real person, but I was able to have a two-way "conversation" about things I could never talk about in real life.

Littlegreenbauble · 13/01/2026 17:50

Got divorced

3luckystars · 13/01/2026 18:12

I have unsubscribed from everything since reading this thread.

I was away last week for a few days, and had a very nice time, and since I returned, I am really noticing things that are stressing me out this week. It’s obvious. I’m going to activity back away from these things (and people) and keep reading this thread for inspiration. It’s great!

Thank you x

sparrowhawkhere · 13/01/2026 18:32

Make Sunday evenings nice and enjoyable. Have a good meal together and either go for a walk or watch a film.
Do as many jobs in the week or even better, in the morning before work, so weekends are free to go on days out or relax and go to the park multiple times, meal or whatever we fancy.

I love this thread!

Some more from me:

I never ever go to the Post Office, I get them to come to me for returned parcels or parcels to send, via Royal Mail online. They will even bring a label with a barcode. https://send.royalmail.com/

We have several heaters in our freezing house to avoid putting the heating on and they are operated remotely via an app so I put the heater on in my bedroom remotely 2 hours before I go to bed and it's warm when I get up there

We stayed at a hotel with an amazing mattress and so pulled back the bedding to find out the type and bought one for home. It's gorgeous.

I try not to tolerate small things that make life difficult but to solve them. This week I bought 3 packs of make up wipes, 3 new chargers. If something doesn't work I throw it away.

I buy birthday presents and cards well in advance and send them if needed (see above!)

hi @Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere I need the brand of that mattress please or it didn't happen! 😜

Irememberwhenitwasallfieldsroundhere · 13/01/2026 20:45

@itsmeagainagain the mattress is a Hypnos Lansdowne Cashmere Mattress -Super King (180x200)

How on earth did you manage to clear 5000 emails in one day? Please can you share you strategy? I have 8000 in my inbox and tried so many times to tackle it but never make much progress. Scared of deleting something I actually need. How have you done that??!!

Searching for an email, say Amazon and then selecting all from that company/address and deleting. In some cases there were well over a 100 emails from one place. When you go on the search option it can give you an email address and you just get a list of all the emails sent from them, so know you aren't deleting anything you want to keep.

It took a bloody long time, but I got a bit obsessed!

on a mac you can just shuffle them by selecting "View" and then choosing "from" from the drop down list. Not sure if windows has the same. Then if you are happy that you want to bin them all, you just block select them and delete the whole block

I did this a couple of years ago. There’s a whole household of stuff up there. It took weeks and was utterly exhausting. The n.. a squirrel got in and we had to get pest control out to catch it. That took multiple attempts and they just pushed everything up on the sides . Needless to say it’s all in utter chaos again, in fact worse than before

oh bloody squirrels! I emptied my loft last year. I have got a dodgy knee (went hip deep in a bog dogwalking and twisted it getting out) and I decided that as I got older there would come a point when I could no longer manage the loft ladder so I emptied it completely. Back in autumn this year I got a squirrel in my loft and had to get a pest controller in. Luckily for the squirrel, it decamped rather than coming to s sticky end so the pest man blocked the hole where it got in and that was that. He said to me he was so glad my loft was empty as having a shedload of stuff stored up there made his job much harder and squirrels loved to make beds in more than one box and stash their food in boxes too.

Additionally whenever I am feeling overwhelmed by what there is to do, I say to myself "The loft is empty" and I feel much better!

Intrigued to know what mattress it was! I don't sleep well these days - anything that might help would be a bonus!
