Back on US soil, an American citizen in a peaceful neighbourhood is gunned down by masked agents sent there to make people afraid.

Despicable, wretched people lying, lying, lying - all day, every day, about everything.

Many in the US have discovered that Owning the Libs is expensive. It's cost them their jobs, homes, SNAP, farms, health insurance, businesses and family members.

Wait till they find out it's cost them their democracy too.

Yeah, but they had to. It's not Trump's fault if they suffer, it's Biden and Harris's for making them do it.

RedTagAlan · 15/01/2026 07:50

Yup. The dog that caught the car.

I am convinced the repub politicians were disappointed when SCOTUS done away with Roe V Wade. Because that was a massive fund raiser issue wiped out.

And I think the dems celebrated, because they thought it would be a donation bonanza for them.

Both parties have had enough power at times over the past decades to put Roe V Wade into law, but they never did. The dems could have done it under Obama at one point, but it was handwaved away, more important stuff to do. Same with the repubs.

The US system is based on cheques and bank balances after all.

I read a really interesting article a while back about how the same groups/funding on the Christian right deliberately decided to make trans issues the next culture war once they realised that gay marriage and abortion were slipping away as flashpoints that could be used to divide the electorate. I'll see if I can find it later when I have a bit of time.

Of course I had to test nazis.us myself. And they have a Spanish language option!

And, for light relief, Badenoch v Jenrick. Heavy sigh. I have to stop engaging with this stuff, home and abroad. Can't take it.

I didn't know what you meant, @Serpentstooth . MN is usually my first tab to open in the morning.

Jenrick?
Yeah well - he's been pro EU then anti EU depending which way the wind blows. You could see how pissed he was when Badenoch beat him - actually his Mrs, WOW, was she pissed!
Just a matter of time. Not sure about the "leaving the resignation speech on the photocopier" line is true - but they're all politicians, so...

Anyway, whatever was wrong with my girl cat has passed to her brother...he's not been sick (yet, thankfully) but is sleeping upstairs and has been for over 7hrs...🤷‍♀️

Not true.
No party has had a majority in the senate big enough to avoid the filibuster since 1979

I stand corrected. I thought Obama had one, and Clinton.

Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Oman persuaded Trump to “give Iran a chance”, AFP reports. Riyadh, Doha, and Muscat warned Washington that striking Tehran would lead to “serious consequences”.

“A chance”.

This is a really excellent book about, well, literally, the fall of Roe.

One of the points they make is that for years and years leading up to the overturning, the Democrats focussed on winning hearts and minds and the right wing Republicans focussed on the stepping stones of creating court cases and and judge shopping and creating Supreme Court judges.

There was good reason to believe that although the law behind Roe wasn't as watertight as people would have liked, it was settled. Until Supreme Court nominees came along who were willing to perjure themselves about stare decisis during their confirmation hearings, it wasn't that big an issue.

Obama had a very short time where he could have done it and he was kind of busy proving to the country that he wasn't a radical muslim sent to bring down the country. He was sometimes too careful for my liking, but I think codifying Roe during the 90ish days where he could potentially have done it would have been an extremely politically destructive act. Plus, they were focussed on the healthcare battle at the time, which was insanely difficult.

Sorry - adding link to the book

That is most endearing.
They should have smoked in the meeting. That might have discombobulated Vance and co. Trés European, n'est-ce pas? 😂

Talkinpeace · 15/01/2026 14:56

@walllaw
But Obama never had a Senate majority big enough to ignore the filibuster
and it WOULD have been used

Here in the UK we are used to legislation going through on wafer thin majorities
its hard to remember that in the US, if the minority party so chooses
only 60% or more means anything

(gosh, on that basis we'd have been spared Brexit!)

I’d need that with added substance and whisky!
I haven’t ever smoked other than tobacco nor do I like whisky - but my goodness I’d need at least that lot to take the edge off meeting Vance and listening to him - thinking about it be best before meeting him!

I saw in interview on telly today with Trump, getting on his plane I think. Trump was asked about the Greenland PM. Trump was .. Who, don't know him, never heard of him, what's he like, no idea about him.

I agree. I do think there's a small chance they could have managed to push it through, and I do mean small, but it would have been at the expense of the ACA, which at the time seemed more pressing.

It wasn't binding legislation.
It was a glorified opinion poll.

RedTagAlan · 15/01/2026 16:26

So, the help Trump promised is sort of on it's way. A carrier.

Or maybe. It was seen south of the Philippines heading that way.

So either the gulf, or maybe through the Canal and the med to Greenland ?

walllaw · 15/01/2026 16:32

Well, he's now threatening to invoke the insurrection act, so here we go.

Since states control elections in the US, this could get interesting.

Oh.

Is there a Trump golf tracker on social media somewhere ? I am wondering how many rounds he manages with all this going on.

Maybe its a case of a 50 over par... feck, insurrection act !
