How on earth to boots justify their prices?

I needed paracetamol today. More than two packs. So I picked up two from savers. They cost me 49p.
I had to go to boots to pick up a prescription so I thought I would grab a pack there. The exact same stuff just in different packaging was £1.49!!!

Now I technically didn’t pay a penny for them as I used my points, but seriously?!!

I mean I think £1.49 is completely fine 😂
considerinb how much pain and suffering can be relieved by paracetamol, and we have the privilege of being able to just buy it on the high street, I think it’s really fine and it’s a bizarre 1st world problem to moan about.

I genuinely thought this was going to be about some epic No.7 magic foundation costing £35… or that double serum everyone bangs on about that costs something like £180!!!

I could get worked up about that. Not really about paracetamol

JDM625 · 07/01/2026 20:38

That's an awful lot of paracetamol- are you ok?

I guess its the same as veg- you can buy onions in lidl/aldi for xxp and in Waitrose, they will be 5x that amount.

I doubt that's true.

Are buying branded paracetamol OP? Boots own brand is 49p.

TickleMyPickle · 07/01/2026 20:43

I work in Boots and a pack of 16 500mg tablets of paracetamol is 49p?

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 07/01/2026 20:43

You think that's bad then just try finding some in the jungle.

TooManyCupsAndMugs · 07/01/2026 20:44

I paid €6.50 for paracetamol in Barcelona, you can only buy it in pharmacies and I was desperate!

Aworldofmyown · 07/01/2026 20:44

Boots own is 49p, you need to look down. The expensive stuff is kept at eye level!!

Nutmuncher · 07/01/2026 20:44

They’re really cheap in Boots?

UpMyself · 07/01/2026 20:47

@Soubriquet ,why are you buying so much paracetamol?
If in Boots ask for the cheapest.

Also it might be an idea to not accuse the few high street shops we have left of overpricing products.

It’s Boots own brand, but I need the capsules

And I take maximum paracetamol dosage everyday on the advice of my doctor. It’s cheaper for them for me to buy it, than it is for the NHS to dispense it.

Yes I see they have the tablets here but i sometimes struggle swallowing them. And the exact same tablets are 19p in savers… so it’s still a lot more

Bugger. The pop up there is hiding the £1.49

I had to pay about a euro per tablet in Croatia, made me thankful for UK prices and a reminder to bring it with!

CalmShaker · 07/01/2026 21:07

Count yourself lucky, I can only take the self dissolving neurofen Meltz and get bent over the barrel each time let me tell you

ArtesianWater · 07/01/2026 21:08

I bought some paracetamol from a normal chemist in Mayfair once. Didn't even look at the price because it was just own-brand paracetamol. I was also in desperate need of it. It cost me £7.

MushyPeasAndMintSauce · 07/01/2026 21:10

I always put drink in my mouth and swallow tablets with said drink I used to struggle to put the tablets in my mouth so now they are swallowed with the biggest mouthful of fluid I can manage.

Soubriquet · 07/01/2026 21:10

Jeez!! I suppose I did get off lightly but I just can’t believe I can buy 3 boxes for the price of one!

Yes, it would be cheaper if I could swallow the non-coated stuff. Sometimes I manage, and then there are some days where I gag and cannot manage it (I have ARFID)

Probably priced to deter the poor from entering the borough

Paracetamol suppositories for toddlers in my local pharmcacy are £18. In Boots they wanted to charge me £50!

I know! I already weep at the £18 whenever I need a new pack from the pharmacy. Absolutely bonkers. But the PP who mentioned how expensive they are in Europe is absolutely correct - we should count our blessings! I think in Lidl or Aldi they're like 17p a box. Antihistamines are cheap, too. Bloody great.

A lot of supermarkets like Sainsburys price match them on paracetamol, and again it’s the non coated stuff that’s 17p

I learnt the hard way about boots being expensive, bought FIL aftershave for Christmas, thought had a bargain as got in Black Friday sales, then saw the same one in lots of other places for at least £20 cheaper!! So now I think FIL thinks I spent a lot less than I did. I then looked at other perfumes and aftershaves comparing boots to other retailers and boots was significantly more expensive.

Tepast · 07/01/2026 22:00

Wasn't boots bought out by someone else a few years ago? They're certainly overpriced now for most things and our local one is very disorganised with missing tags and products, and is dirty. This altogether makes me feel that they're no longer in the business of servicing customers, more that they're occupying allocated space on the high street while financial machinations take place elsewhere.
