Neighbour keeps taking in our parcels without asking

StayceGerste · 06/01/2026 02:05

This is a small thing but it’s starting to annoy me more than it probably should.
Our neighbour takes in our parcels whenever we’re out, which is kind, but she then opens the outer packaging “to check what it is” and comments on it when we collect it. Nothing malicious, just overly curious.
I appreciate the help, but I also don’t love someone knowing exactly what I’ve ordered every time.

Obviously she should not be doing this.
Can you not specify in delivery instructions that parcels are to be delivered to your address only, or to a nearby pick-up point.

These look great, but why is the delivery man hiding in a bush?

😂

Order a bag of dildos and some gimp masks. That’ll shut her up

Edited

She did.

How can she take your parcels without asking? If you are not in for your deliveries you need to ensure a safe space instead of neighbours, or start choosing a collection point. You are in control here, just change how your parcels are delivered.

How do you know who the carrier is and what happens if someone else sends you a parcel. I ordered through Amazon who normally just deliver via a van. Last week I was informed Evri was dropping a parcel - I hadn’t ordered anything via Evri but it was my Amazon order in the end.

DeftWasp · 06/01/2026 21:32

Have a custom meg made up sent to yourself with "stop opening my parcels" printed on it.

You can usually find this information out when you are ordering. It tells you somewhere.

Yes, I have a job. I either arrange deliveries for a day I am off and at home or I have then sent to a collection locker/shop. It’s not at all challenging to do this.

It’s not always an option to do either of those things.

Many companies don’t offer the option to have delivery to a pick-up point, and many people don’t have a pick-up point close to them.

Many companies don’t offer a choice of delivery day (and even less offer a choice of time slot) and even when they do things can get delayed.

I am currently waiting for two deliveries. One I was able to pick next day so I timed my order so it would come on a weekend, but it was then delayed by the weather so now I’ll be at work. The second there was no choice of date and I’ve now learned it’s coming when I’m at work.

Neither order had the option of a pick-up point, though I wouldn’t have selected that anyway as I don’t have a car and it’s too far to walk with what will be large heavy parcels.

Not as simple as you make out. Perhaps you don’t do that much online shopping, or maybe your work schedule gives you more time at home than some others have.

HermioneGrangersHair · 06/01/2026 20:54

I also think in this day and age with online shopping being an everyday thing that landlords should provide a safe place for parcels as well as letters. For you it would be so difficult to order anything of real value in case it gets stolen.

When I lived in an apt, I had my online deliveries delivered to me at work.
It was a large office and in the end, so many people were doing it, it started to annoy the receptionists.

A neighbour taking in deliveries means you don't have to trek around to pick it up from the sorting office.

Just include on your delivery instructions not to deliver to No. X or else give an alternative address or redirecdt to a post service and collect at your leisure.

It’s absolutely as simple as that if you don’t want people opening your parcels that you don’t order do home delivery. We all have options and making out that this is something OP has no control over is ridiculous.

So what have you done?

Are you just expecting one of your neighbours to take it or have you spoken to your neighbour and asked if they would take it in if its left on your doorstep?

If you do a lot of online shopping, you will have to come up with a better solution like a parcel service, another family member or else just stop shopping online I guess?

Phoenixfire1988 · 06/01/2026 22:03

Get yourself on dragon dicks.com and order the most obscure one you find along with lube then act very enthusiastic when she hands it over

Nearly50omg · 06/01/2026 22:04

You can go online and change the delivery for Saturday when you are home!

I don’t have a landlord, but even if I did there’s nowhere they could put a safe place - it’s a shared front door and then stairs up to each floor of flats. It’s a pretty standard building in my city, but yes when ordering parcels it’s not ideal. That’s why we all tend to take parcels in for each other.

They will leave it at my door, or with a neighbour in my building. It’s not ideal but not a problem either. I wasnt complaining, just responding to the PP who keeps insisting it’s all so simple and easy to arrange the perfect delivery and doesn’t seem to live in the same world as the rest of us.

I really don’t think you can ever guarantee that any parcel is going to arrive exactly when you want, and if that’s been your experience you’re luckier than most. The more realistic option is to tell the neighbour to stop opening her bloody parcels - I’d have been livid and told her so the very first time it happened.

TBH I’m beginning to think the whole thread is a wind-up, OP hasn’t been back.

This is a big thing! She is prying snd im fact acting illegally by opening your mail without your consent. Can you add a delivery note to your orders to not leave with that particular neighbour? You’ll need to talk to her too. Good luck

Honestly, why are you looking to defend OP? If the site doesn’t state delivery information and you need to know it to ensure you are there for said delivery you do not order from there. Personal responsibility seems to be amiss here. So many people saying ‘but what if…’ come on, if OP can’t be home for her deliveries and isn’t wanting them to go to her neighbour then OP needs to take action to prevent that, be it not ordering or arranging a safe place, alternate neighbour or collection point.

Came here to say exactly this 😂
it’s actually illegal to open other people’s post. I would remind her of that and ask her to stop. Cheeky cow

Most ridiculous problem ever. People should never open your parcels in any circumstances, and to keep letting her do this is insane!!

Dontgive · 06/01/2026 23:36

It's annoying, I have a neighbour i dont put for parcels to be left with them but today they took my parcel in and have lost it. I think you will have to put on delivery instructions as someone else suggested not to be left with them.

Discobooloo · 06/01/2026 23:40

On some of the courier apps you can put comments and flag which neighbours to avoid

CrayonCritic5 · 06/01/2026 23:46

NoTouch · 06/01/2026 18:47

Tell her firmly to stop it.

Mildred, I don't want to fall out with you here as I really appreciate you taking my parcels in and having good neighbour relations, however you are really out of order opening my parcels, it is an invasion of my privacy and illegal to open another persons post without their permission.

If you really cannot control yourself please tell the delivery driver you cannot accept them and they can either try another neighbour or redeliver at another time. I really hope not to have to have to have this conversation again or need to take further action.

Perfect. This. Had a quick scroll through and can’t believe the lack of outrage. Opening someone else’s parcels is truly nuts!

OneRealWriter · 07/01/2026 00:23

”niche” inflatable dolls. When she then looks scandalised just say - oh gosh I really didn’t think anyone would have ever seen that as it’s actually illegal to open post not addressed to you! Well thank goodness it wasn’t the other package! It could have been far more embarrassing- small mercies!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 07/01/2026 01:23

It makes zero sense why people suggest OP orders something "embarrassing" like a giant dildo 🤦‍♀️ in order to cause the neighbour to regret opening packages. If she's opening packages surely she's gossiping about her neighbours, too?

Mary, I mistakenly opened a package meant for Susan in 3b. It was a giant dildo! 😂😂

Who exactly would be the embarrassed party? 🤔
It is much more sensible to tell the nosy CF to stop.
