Neighbour keeps taking in our parcels without asking

This is a small thing but it’s starting to annoy me more than it probably should.
Our neighbour takes in our parcels whenever we’re out, which is kind, but she then opens the outer packaging “to check what it is” and comments on it when we collect it. Nothing malicious, just overly curious.
I appreciate the help, but I also don’t love someone knowing exactly what I’ve ordered every time.

Order a bag of dildos and some gimp masks. That’ll shut her up

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 06/01/2026 02:17

If anything is broken or missing one day, how will she explain that? You’ll have trouble getting a refund maybe. When ordering online, in the instruction bit for the delivery write ‘not to be left with number 2 as she opens my parcels’ then at least you are covered.

And, yes, dildos and gimp masks.

2old4thispoo · 06/01/2026 02:20

Get a parcel box.

When you say she takes them in without asking, do you mean that the delivery person knocks on her door when there's no answer from yours and she accepts, or does she intercept the delivery person when they get no response from knocking on your door (or even before, if she tells them that there won't be anybody in at yours)?

Opening your parcels is massively out of order, though. It's not just 'a bit cheeky'; it's outrageous.

I agree with PP: be proactive and put a sign on your door saying not to leave at her house. She can hardly be offended if she happens to see your sign; she clearly knows that you don't open somebody else's parcels to have a nosey inside.

Otherwise, order a washing machine-sized box of spring-loaded glitter!!

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 06/01/2026 16:39

She’s not being helpful, she’s being nosey. A parcel box sounds like the easiest solution.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Set up a safe place with Amazon, Royal Mail, DPD, EVRI and Yodel etc.

Get A sign on your door instructing that no parcels to be left with neighbour.

Absolutely this 😂

lawmum3 · 06/01/2026 16:42

It is actually illegal to intentionally open post addressed to someone else (Postal Services Act)....so it's more than just outrageous- it is against the law!

Surely its illegal for her to open your parcels or is that only Royal Mail items

Order this:

Neighbour keeps taking in our parcels without asking
averychoc · 06/01/2026 16:45

How can she take your parcels without asking? If you are not in for your deliveries you need to ensure a safe space instead of neighbours, or start choosing a collection point. You are in control here, just change how your parcels are delivered.

ittakes2 · 06/01/2026 16:45

I used to be house number 1 on my street and occasionally had parcels from another house accidentally delivered to me (ie a parcel for 13 might accidentally end up with me at 1) as I think sometimes the label went wonky.

I had the phone number of the young lady who had this problem and she always came over and collected no issue.

Except one Christmas I had a flurry of parcels for me (last min adhd present shopping!) and I just opened them all at once completely forgetting to double check no-one had accidentally delivered something to me.

Upon opening one box, I realised maybe I had opened a present one of my kids had bought for me …. why on earth would they think I needed a giant thing like that? About 60cms long with a large head the size of a large apple covered in black?

And then it dawned on me, I had not checked the name on the parcel. It was addressed to my neighbour. I had to repack to make it look unopened and text her to say a parcel had been delivered to her. I did not know her well enough to admit it had accidentally opened it and I knew she was getting a giant dildo / vibrator for Christmas.

mondaytosunday · 06/01/2026 16:46

On delivery instructions mention a safe place. I have one and I also say not to deliver to neighbours. And tell her that while you appreciate her ‘helpfulness’ you prefer she didn’t open the boxes!

Northernladdette · 06/01/2026 16:47

Just ask her not to??

Thanks for that just ordered one hopefully I’ll not have parcels thrown over my 6ft gate anymore.

YodasHairyButt · 06/01/2026 16:51

I’d tell her I was grateful for her taking the parcels in but could she please stop opening them?!! No excuse for that at all. Or as PP have said, stop her from taking them in somehow.

BillieWiper · 06/01/2026 16:53

She opens the parcels to 'check what's inside'?! That's absolutely fucking outrageous! How could she do such things and not go bright red with shame. And worry you'd think she was dishonest and or absolutely loopy?!

It’s not illegal. It’s down to intent and whether you intend to deprive them of their parcel.

This proper made me laugh, thanks!

OP, it's illegal to open someone else's post.

Surely when she did it the first time you acted shocked and when she did it the second time you asked her why she opened it and could she not do that! How many times are we talking? Is she just a neighbour or are you friends?

Came here to say exactly this 😂
it’s actually illegal to open other people’s post. I would remind her of that and ask her to stop. Cheeky cow
