Neighbour keeps taking in our parcels without asking

This is a small thing but it’s starting to annoy me more than it probably should.
Our neighbour takes in our parcels whenever we’re out, which is kind, but she then opens the outer packaging “to check what it is” and comments on it when we collect it. Nothing malicious, just overly curious.
I appreciate the help, but I also don’t love someone knowing exactly what I’ve ordered every time.

Stop ordering so much stuff then!

My NDN is constantly ordering crap on the grounds that I'm home and can take it in.I"ve now refused after he started to fail to come round for it and after 5 days of an enormous parcel blocking my hallway, I trudged round with it to be told, Oh I was wondering when you were going to bother to bring it over.

Problem solved. I now refuse his deliveries.

But honestly, I don't uderstand why people order so much stuff when they know that they're not going to be home? Just order it to come on a certain day when you're home. Or stop buying so many things?

I used to be house number 1 on my street and occasionally had parcels from another house accidentally delivered to me (ie a parcel for 13 might accidentally end up with me at 1) as I think sometimes the label went wonky.

I had the phone number of the young lady who had this problem and she always came over and collected no issue.

Except one Christmas I had a flurry of parcels for me (last min adhd present shopping!) and I just opened them all at once completely forgetting to double check no-one had accidentally delivered something to me.

Upon opening one box, I realised maybe I had opened a present one of my kids had bought for me …. why on earth would they think I needed a giant thing like that? About 60cms long with a large head the size of a large apple covered in black?

And then it dawned on me, I had not checked the name on the parcel. It was addressed to my neighbour. I had to repack to make it look unopened and text her to say a parcel had been delivered to her. I did not know her well enough to admit it had accidentally opened it and I knew she was getting a giant dildo / vibrator for Christmas.

Uh, that's a Theragun. For actual massage, not intimate use.

PS5Gamer · 06/01/2026 19:57

“Stop fucking opening my parcels!”

That should do the trick.

MintDog · 06/01/2026 19:58

Oh and HONESTLY i doubt she's opening your parcels. You're not there to receive them. When I do order things online, I quite often receive parcels that have been opened. John Lewis is classic for this - obviously someone having a look to see if it's anything worth stealing.

Utterly stupid and off base advice. This thread is about a CF nosy neighbour taking and opening packages that she hasn't been asked to do. 🤦‍♀️

Bobiverse · 06/01/2026 19:59

Order a glitter bomb to yourself! Then she can’t even be mad because you can be all, “Well, it was aimed at me. What a shame you opened it.”

Seriously? I don’t think I’ve ever received a parcel that’s been opened. Are you sure you don’t have a nosy neighbour intercepting them too?

Your solution to her neighbour opening her parcels is to stop ordering things?

Alright…

Order a bag of dildos and some gimp masks. That’ll shut her up

Edited

As usual, first response nails it!!!!

Sigh. Thread started at 2am. Stupid, unlikely scenario. OP hasn’t returned👀

At the very least OP should stop ordering things to be delivered when she is out. It’s not that hard.

Ya know, some people have these things where they do stuff and people pay them for it, so they can pay their bills.

They're called JOBS. Have you ever heard of them?

Yes, I have a job. I either arrange deliveries for a day I am off and at home or I have then sent to a collection locker/shop. It’s not at all challenging to do this.

Wonderlandpeony · 06/01/2026 20:21

It's actually illegal to open someone else's post. Tell her to stop doing it, I certainly would.

A person has the right to order something delivered to their home without a neighbour opening it to see what it is.

It’s not challenging to tell her neighbour to fucking stop it either.

Get a parcel box.

amzn.eu/d/dyAVHXT

These look great, but why is the delivery man hiding in a bush?

Fulmine · 06/01/2026 20:42

Ask her not to open the parcels?

Often the simplest remedies are the best.

nevernotmaybe · 06/01/2026 20:42

lawmum3 · 06/01/2026 16:42

It is actually illegal to intentionally open post addressed to someone else (Postal Services Act)....so it's more than just outrageous- it is against the law!

No it's not. It is only illegal to open something with the intent to act to someone's detriment , there's no law stopping you opening post of any kind though once delivered by the service to a house.

Livpool · 06/01/2026 20:43

I’m incredibly nosy and have never done this! She is extremely odd and cheeky!

Scarfitwere · 06/01/2026 20:44

Northernladdette · 06/01/2026 16:47

Just ask her not to??

First sensible comment! Hi Jean..I note you've been opening my parcels. Please don't do this its weird'

anyolddinosaur · 06/01/2026 20:48

Order for delivery to a local locker where you can collect at a time convenient to you. Or tell her politely that you'll check the items yourself when you get them.

Read the original post!!! 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄 I’d be having words with John Lewis about your opened packages as well.

i just posted to say that in my block of flats we all take each others parcels in and then I read yours. Such a different take! I’ve always been really grateful - means no risk of the parcel being nicked by some random coming into the building. Plus sometimes parcels have to be signed for and if no-one takes it in it doesn’t get delivered. I can see it might be annoying if she’s on the top floor though and you have to treck upstairs.

I also think in this day and age with online shopping being an everyday thing that landlords should provide a safe place for parcels as well as letters. For you it would be so difficult to order anything of real value in case it gets stolen.
