It’s boring but - shoe storage?

Our hall is a mess. We have some wicker baskets but I would love some shoe storage. Ideally a cupboard with shelves? Not the fold out shoe boxes I have seen in Ikea.

Does anyone mind sharing what they have?

We've just got a bog standard shoe rack. We have one in the hallway and one in the porch. But sometimes it's just not enough and you need more storage. No advice I'm afraid, just sharing what I have.

Would like to know as I’m stuck in a similar shoe tsunami.

We have the Argos version of kallax. Each person has a cube for shoes and spare ones are used for hats, gloves, bags etc.

My response is of course based on how many pairs are you talking about? A household of 4 is a different storage issue than for 2.

Can you afford to hire a carpenter and get something built in your hall?
Would a plain wardrobe, or large cupboard with sliding doors, shelved out, be suitable?
In the wardrobe (or cupboard) could shoes be kept in named plastic shoe boxes and put away every. single. time?
Do all shoes at all times need to be in the hall or could there be a regular cull and the pairs not currently used put elsewhere in the house like bedroom or study?

NB: best not store shoes in your clothing wardrobe because they can make a wardrobe smell!

We have 4 apple crates stacked 2x2, each one with a shelf in the middle. They look something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Wooden-Apple-handmade-shelved-storage/dp/B00G49G63Q

Though I'm sure ours were cheaper than that, and we definitely didn't get them from Amazon. They hold absolutely loads and work really well. Or at least they would, if our shoes didn't keep mysteriously breeding!

ScaredOfFlying · 04/01/2026 15:05

You need to give dimensions for your hall and number of family members inc how many adults and how many kids. We are 2 adults one 9 year-old. Our hall is too narrow for any storage there but we have a wooden rack/bench in the playroom/den (which can be reached from front door without stepping on carpet). It has a seat and two levels of rail below it, holds about 8 pairs. However we also have a wicker basket in each downstairs room and I am ruthless about moving shoes upstairs if not in regular use.

ScaredOfFlying · 04/01/2026 15:07

Upstairs they are stored in the bottom of wardrobes.

Oldraver · 04/01/2026 16:13

I bought this one from Amazon as I wanted one with shelves rather than the slatted or angled ones. Think it was about £70, not available now but plenty similar

It holds trainer boxes and in winter my boots boxes

Shoe tsunami 😂

We are 2 adults, 2 teenagers and an absolute shoe tsunami. We have loads in wardrobes but that’s far from the front door. We have a lovely selection of smelly running trainers, Ugg boots, crocs and dirty school shoes.

I like the idea of built in but maybe not the execution. I have room for a small unit that holds ideally 10-15 pairs?

Surely it’s a Shoenami?

waitingforthehallmarkedman · 04/01/2026 17:08

I had clever closet built in shoe storage. It transformed the mess under my stairs. I love it!

Starship74 · 04/01/2026 17:09

I bought an antique bookcase from eBay and use that to store shoes. It loos nice and it is sturdy!

SwedishEdith · 04/01/2026 17:15

How deep can your storage be? We have 4x4 Kallax with the shoes hidden in the containers. But for bedding, I bought a cheap wardrobe (£13) off eBay, got partner to add shelves and then painted it. It had already been painted so I wasn't ruining anything - it really was a basic but quite pretty wardrobe. Could something like that fit your hall? Even better if there's a mirror in there somewhere.

TeenLifeMum · 04/01/2026 17:17

We have a set of drawers in the hall and a large sideboard in the dining room all filled with shoes but mostly the shoes sit round them in the “shoe cupboard zone”. I’ve decided I’ll miss them when they’re gone but in the meantime I inwardly sigh on a daily basis.

pollydollydoodlealltheway · 04/01/2026 17:19

I’m following this as I have a shoenami going on too. I currently have a cheap
b and m shoe rack but needing something more substantial, it needs to be narrow though - not much wider than the biggest shoe 😂 (size 10!)

Absolutely!

Ive survived the poo-nami years and now deep in the shoenami trenches.

Same problem here! I love the idea of having a liftable bottom two stairs to create storage under there (seen on Tik Tok!

Ophy83 · 04/01/2026 18:03

Shelves in the cupboard under the stairs. The shelves are deep enough to fit 2 rows of shoes so when you open the cupboard you see rows of single shoes with their pair behind them

Keroppi · 04/01/2026 18:04

Is your hall narrow or wide? I love the shoe benches.
Alternatively by a back door and front you can put a large bookcase type shoe rack. Can fit a lot
Or the ikea shoe cabinets - every member of family has their own square or drawer

Thunderdcc · 04/01/2026 18:05

We have two Ikea shoe racks stacked, so 4 shelves. Each one holds 4 pairs of shoes, so in theory one shelf = one person.

In reality we have too many shoes, me and DDs don't always use it, DH loses his shit on a regular basis about shoes not being where they should be.

I don't like shoes being in wardrobes, I think it makes everything smell. Also the shoe rack sits in front of the cupboard under the stairs so it is in the way. We need something skinnier but higher I think.

MelaniasBigHat · 04/01/2026 18:15

We’ve got a shoe rack in the hall, so that everyone can leave their shoes in front of it to trip over.

Big basket of doom at the back door for running shoes, football boots, crocs for swimming pool.

TheChosenTwo · 04/01/2026 18:39

A shoe rack in the hallway under the stairs (bought from Heals i think, many many moons ago!) and a second one dh built in the utility room for lesser used but still in weekly rotation shoes.
Then in my wardrobe I have a shelf at the top for my overflow. And a box in my office for the secondary overflow 🫣.
The downstairs storage is not enough, there are 5 of us with a lot of shoes each, I do cull anything the youngest grows out of but he probably has 5 pairs of trainers, school shoes, a pair of smart shoes bought recently for a funeral, walking boots, wellies, football boots, flip flops (not on the shoe racks at the moment) and he’s only one person out of the 5 in the house.
