One shitty job a day - mission to get all the crappy tasks done this year

Shittyyear2025 · 02/01/2026 16:40

I'm an eternal untidy person. I don't see my own clutter. I've tried HARD to find a routine that I can get engaged in, signed up for COUNTLESS get yourself organised apps.

I saw a video yesterday about getting one shitty job a day done. I think I can manage one shitty job a day. So far I cleaned the lounge carpet (over yesterday and today, bad back and heavy furniture) and I've painted a door that's been off it's hinges and propped up against my hall wall for maybe a year.

I reckon one shitty job a day (or for an hour towards it say, after work, longer crap jobs can be done at the weekend) I can do. I can finally finish decorating the kitchen. I can finally finish painting the landing/stairs/hall after the ceiling collapsed in Autumn 2024, I can sort out the front garden one job at a time (hell, I can even get rid of the ironing mountain and charity shop everything I no longer wear for an hour a day).

Anyone want to join me? Or any tips for starting AND STICKING WITH domestic routines?

I have just cleared out my under-stairs cupboard. It must be more than a year since I last did it. Multiple take-away trays (please don't judge) that I was saving 'just in case', ditto jam jars.

Feeling very proud of myself because that is a totally SJ.

Mydogisagentleman · 10/03/2026 11:46

Finally got my car cleaned. It has to be 8 months since it was last done.
Sorted the rubbish out of it and put the 3 dog towels from the back seat in to wash.

I desperately need to paint a bedroom ceiling and order a new single bed, ideally to do the ceiling once i dismantle the old bed / waiting for the new one to come in, but am dreading it! Can someone give me a kick up the bum please! Every time I paint a ceiling it looks patchy, i use a roller and it still looks awful. I bought one coat ceiling paint, possibly it needs more than one coat?! Any advice appreciated!

My advice is you probably won't notice anyway but if you do see a thin patch just painting that area again should work fine. Good luck. I have to paint a wall that has 10 pictures on it. I think it will never get painted because of having to deal with all the picture hooks.

The4thSister · 10/03/2026 13:52

Thank you! Good luck with your wall :)

Put my back out and just as it was getting better it went again. Been sorting out admin stuff & delegating from the sofa (all I need is a loud hailer)! Until I can grout the tiled hearth & partner can put the edging round it, I can't get the carpet fitters in, so that will have to wait.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/03/2026 17:02

I keep thinking "Oh I should put my winter clothes in vacuum bags" but it is too early .

I could do my heavy winter coats though .

I've got some time at the end of March I can sort them.
I am eyeballing some summer clothes but I need to double check what I have already . Bought some trousers last week and ordered a swimsuit then that's done .

DH is still painting , doing the bathroom in stages because we still have to use it and his knees get knackered .
I did some garden tidy up , not a SJ but it's always harder work than I imagine .

justasking111 · 14/03/2026 17:09

I'm trying to get everything done before I go into hospital on Monday. So much to remember. It's hard on two sticks as well. Post surgery I'll be off my feet and drugged up for a time.

I know DH doesn't notice the dog hairs floating around. Needs shopping lists. The cleaner and I got the kitchen, loo, hall done. All carpets vacuumed on Thursday. I'm knackered. Going to enjoy mother's day tomorrow though.

Hope it goes well @justasking111 ! from Monday you only have one job on the list and that's to rest and recover 💐

@70isaLimitNotaTarget I've also been pondering over getting some winter jumpers packed away. I need to get my warmer weather clothes out soon for holiday, but I will then need to commit to the changeover!

This week I organised my wardrobes shelf where I keep makeup, jewellery, medications, toiletries. It was a faff but looks so much better.

CherryRipe1 · 15/03/2026 18:28

Ordered more drawer organisers and vacuum bags😁 Just got a few more bits of lingerie & socks to sort out. Online sales have tanked, oh well🤷

NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen · 26/03/2026 10:28

Been ignoring the thread but not the SJs as have got loads done. In fact I just had to look back to my last post on this thread (which was over a month ago) to see where I was up to!

DD13's room is now fully done - new desk and chair in, old furniture and tons of associated clutter cleared out, she's thrilled with it all.

My old wardrobes have gone and my new Ikea Pax is in. I feel like I was the last person standing in the UK to not have Ikea Pax tbh. I've taken them all down one wall so there is tons of storage. I am amusing myself by calling them my Influencer Wardrobes and am now spending half my life debating what extra pull out shelves and glass fronted drawers and similar to buy for them 😀

In the process of clearing the wardrobes I've done lots of clearing in my office and that's nearly there though no doubt it'll become a dumping ground again soon enough argh. I bought some clear plastic storage boxes from Amazon for both DD and I to keep our drawers and desk shelves tidy, need to get on with sorting those.

I've been overwhelmed at the thought of tackling the shed so I decided to just go and have a quick look and throw away anything that I obviously didn't want to keep... several hours later I'd thrown about 70% of the contents out! Still some work to do in terms of organising what needs to stay in there in the best way possible but I've broken the back of it.

Deep spring cleaned my main bathroom including cleaning the shower filter on hands and knees with cotton wool buds 😀

I managed to get a refund on some non-stick pans that failed despite having them for 13 years 😎so I cleared out my pan drawer and gave that a good clean. Picked up some new super quality KitchenAid pans in TK Maxx which I'm thrilled with.

Went to the Apple Store to buy a new MacBook and unwittingly arrived about an hour after the new Neo was released! I'd seen it online but knew I needed to go to the store to check the range out and make sure I was getting the right one for my needs. Turns out that one is perfect for me and is about a third of the price I'd budgeted for, they've really come down in cost since I bought my last one in 2016. Just have to wait for the stock to come back in now as they sold out on launch...

Mostly keeping up to the ongoing stuff like ironing. I need to sew on a large statement gold tone button that fell off a navy Zara cape coat. I only really bought it for the statement button so I do need to do some sewing for the first time in about a decade 😀

@CherryRipe1 My online sales have tanked as well, I have no idea what's going on, it's like someone has just switched eBay and Vinted off. I suspect it's global instability - I've been selling for 16 years and have always noticed that whenever something like Ukraine/Liz Truss/Iran happens sales stop. It's like people just freeze even simple things as they're waiting to see what's going to happen next. It's particularly frustrating as I bought a thermal label printer on an Amazon Spring Deal and now I don't have any postage labels to flipping print!

@Shittyyear2025 I know you started the thread because you felt you were drowning so I hope you're doing ok and life isn't throwing you too many hurdles

Hope you're ok post surgery @justasking111 and that everyone on the thread is still pushing on successfully 🙂

CherryRipe1 · 26/03/2026 13:00

@NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThenWell done on your productivity! Yes I'm inclined to think you are right about eBay and Vinted & the global situation. I'm hardly getting any views. I did read on Reddit that unless you pay to promote your items on eBay, you won't get a look in as the algorithms won't put you in the running so it's 'pay to play'now. Sneaky if so because they removed the selling fees with 'free' listings but now snuck in a back door method to get more money out of us.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 26/03/2026 19:49

DH is still painting in the bathroom ( it's a slow process )
I suggested once he's done that , the hall needs done ( cats have torn the wallpaper and the carpet needs replaced ) you can imagine how thrilled he was !

I recycled some clothes , changed over DS bedding and duvet ( well I washed it and lobbed it at him )

Sorting out some Easter decorations - I used to do an Easter Tree when the DC were little but now - cats - cannot do this .

I've just taken a look at my views and they are shockingly low. I knew I wasn't progressing to sales but really didn't expect even the views to have almost completely dried up. I think the 'pay per view' theory may have merit here...I know that Vinted's algorithm works in such a way that your items only come up in feeds immediately after listing, so you have one shot at it really, and the only other way people find your things is if they search with specific terms. If I don't get the price I want on initial listing but I get people favouriting I send them offers, and then a week or two later reduce the price so they get a notification that it's dropped, that can entice them in. Other than that I know it's unlikely to be seen by many once it's been sat there for a fortnight. But eBay has always worked the other way, so that every time an item automatically re-lists it comes up high in feeds again. This may be yet another way in which eBay is trying to be more like Vinted (without thinking it through...)

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 30/03/2026 03:04

My car is almost overflowing with rubbish & needs a good hoover. Really must get that done this week!

CherryRipe1 · 30/03/2026 11:05

@NoExchangeBeforeChristmasThen I absolutely agree about views! Tumbleweed gulch springs to mind. Thanks for all your tips for selling on Vinted, I might give it a try, I even bit the bullet and opted for eBay paid promotion on one of my items, just to see if that improved views but no, nada!!! Yes I think you're probably right about eBay copying Vinted's model, be interesting to see if their profits have dropped since Vinted came along. Can you delist on Vinted then relist so it gets pushed to the top again?

ChocolateCinderToffee · 21/04/2026 20:30

Finished sewing up a cardigan I bought the yarn for before lockdown. As all knitters no, the final construction is the crap part. Anyway, it's done, just as winter ends.

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 21/04/2026 20:32

Wall number 2 painted in bedroom
Wall 3 tomorrow night

I am doing this room day by day so I dont get overwhelmed

CleanSkin · 22/04/2026 17:13

Wow the achievements here are amazing, especially the ones where a room or more has been transformed. I came on to say that I’m slowly developing a new habit of taking something to throw away / recycle / donate and it is making a difference. There are many photos and pictures to be edited, framed and hun, I think I’ll try to get into that over the next week or two (whilst continuing the upstairs / downstairs jobs).

user1471538283 · 22/04/2026 19:30

My kitchen is one step forward two back. The newly installed larder cabinet collapsed after two weeks and there are tiny finishing off bits that need doing. So I'm getting someone different to do this. Which is a trial in itself. This has been going on since the beginning of March. I should have just got B&Q to install it.

I'm going to finally hem and put up both sets of drapes in the lounge. One set is like a voile thing and as we are south facing it gets very hot during the summer.

Every time I half think about something a little fancy I correct myself. No I'm keeping things plain because I do not want to invest more time in the upkeep of anything!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 22/04/2026 19:47

DH re-sited the cat litter tray , they have their very own little cupboard now .all cosy and inviting for them

Over the Bank Holiday weekend the plan is to get the last of the A/W clothes packed away -there's not much , a couple of jumpers - and get the summer clothes out of the attic to sort through .
DD can sort her clothes too and see if anything needs t be recycled .

CleanSkin · 23/04/2026 09:02

An excellent idea @70isaLimitNotaTarget.
Jumpers away here too!
