What's the scariest scene in a film that's stuck with you?

There's not many, but one being Wolf Creek, my mum let me watch it with her when I was 13 and it's stuck with me ever since. Another is The Descent from when I was a similar age - the caves and creatures have stuck with me ever since and I refuse to watch either of them again.

@lilybit2025 I agree with you about the Descent - even thinking about makes me feel sick with fear.

Threads (film from the early 80s about nuclear bombs hitting the UK) is truly, truly horrific. Quite the most disturbing and upsetting thing I've ever seen on TV. I was quite unwell for some time after watching it. I would recommend that anyone with fragile mental health avoid it.

We got shown it at school when I was about 12 and I remember walking out of RE and into the sunshine feeling utterly odd. Think half the class ended up going home early that day.

@Dollyfloss you're right. I think only Alien could be considered horror, and that's pushing it 😁
Aliens is a war film.
We'll have to agree to disagree on Prometheus!

I know it’s a very contentious issue!

Mercurious1 · 03/01/2026 18:51

REDRUM mirror scene in the shining.

It's just really interesting to me, as someone who doesn't get it, but grasps that a lot of people (the majority? Horrors seem to sell well?) do.

I love films too, and I love being engrossed in a film, but while I theory I get that for some people it's fun to be frightened by a film and tension and jumpscares just as it's fun to be frightened on a rollercoaster, I struggle to imagine enjoying watching someone being raped and tortured as I gather happens in The Hostel films.

I’m more into the ghost/jump scare type of horror than the gory type to be fair.

I listened to the podcast "Too scary, didn't watch" on Event Horizon. My goodness. 😱

They filmed a full day with porn stars and amputees for the orgy scene. Apparently the test screening of the scene was so bad some audience members fainted/vomited and the theatrical cut ended up as just snippets of the scenes. They stored the remaining footage reels badly and the scenes were lost. Which doesn't sound like a bad thing, all considered.

Yes, I had heard there was more, what was there was quite enough! Hope that footage never turns up…

Borderlands that PP mentioned, great little British horror, had some subtle touches too, like the gravestones in the cemetery changing to show to show the filmmakers death dates.

MrsChristmasHasResigned · 03/01/2026 19:21

@Alltheburpees - my older sister described Soldier Blue to me in great detail. I have always avoided seeing it because of what she told me (although from what I understand, the violence is a real reflection of what happened).

@whats - I agree - hoping that he is not another M. Night Shyamalan

Marieme · 03/01/2026 19:50

I remember watching both The Descent and Wolf creek when I was a teenager and being completely terrified after, I would actually check under my bed to make sure there were no creatures!

Not quite a horror but I watched The Royal Hotel about two girl backpackers who get a job in a pub in the outback, dealing with leery punters and nearly getting attacked and raped, I was on the edge of my seat because it felt so real.

Whatsthatmadflippergoneandflippingdonenow · 03/01/2026 18:21

@MrsChristmasHasResigned I'm not a fan of Jordan Peele's other films but Get Out is a legitimate masterpiece.
Kind of film you have to watch more than once to get all the subtlety and the nuances.

Totally agree - it’s definitely worth rewatching.

MoominMai · 03/01/2026 20:26

Just remembered The Others. Watched it alone in the cinema lol. One of the most frightening bits for me was the curtains being unexpectedly torn apart by an unseen force when the kids are in bed -sheesh! Popcorn went everywhere 😂

giveyourselfapresent · 03/01/2026 22:46

Well, I'll never watch Event Horizon again. I think I've blanked most of it out, thankfully, I just remember the terror. And I'll never ever watch The Grudge again. Those are the two that really scared me.

Several people have mentioned The Descent, and I agree with those that were more scared by the caver getting stuck than the creatures. The whole idea of caving scares me. The diagram below is not from a film, but did stick in my head after I saw it. It shows how a man died in a cave system called the Nutty Putty Caves. It's one of the most horrifying things I can imagine - to be trapped in rock, alive, unable to turn around, unable to be rescued, knowing that this was it, you are just waiting to die there.

Damian Omen 2 as apparently it was prophesied in the bible!

One word.

Hobbling.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 03/01/2026 14:45

Like said also Descent. Scary enough with the creatures but even before they pop up the whole caving and being stuck and just the clastaphonic!

Did read the first time the actresses saw the creature was when they did the filming jump scare!

And im glad we didnt get the American ending because the sequel was a bit iffy. And pointless

The creatures really ruined the movie for me. Trapped and lost in a cave network no one knows you're in, thats horror enough and far more interesting

I hate horror movies and no idea why I watched this but decades later and I still get the heebies thinking of the movie The Ring but the Japanese version where Sadoko comes out of the well.

I may not sleep tonight thinking about it again.

Yes, same scene, though for me it was the American version because I saw it first. Still try not to think about it.

Dustyblue · 04/01/2026 00:19

Again not a horror film but the rape scene in The Accused where Jodie Foster's character is raped over a pinball machine. It was so graphic and realistic it makes me feel ill to this day.

Also Night of the Living Dead. Although I'm pretty sure most zombie movies are supposed to be part comedies that scared the bejesus out of my teenaged self.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 04/01/2026 00:26

@NoIdontwatchbloodytraitors I came on to say the same thing about Bob on Twin Peaks.

I never ever watched a horror throughout my teens and early adulthood as I was so scared (thanks Bob) but I read a bit so decided in my 30s to be brave and watch the Shining as I enjoyed the book. It was recorded on my skybox and something else had upset the schedule so the movie stopped suddenly at the most tense part. I was really bloody traumatised until I saw the ending a few days later.

Edited to add @Mercurious1 that is the exact moment the movie ended. I still shudder to remember

The horrific thing about The Accused is that it's based on the true story of Cheryl Araujo who was trapped and raped in a bar by multiple men for 2 hours.

The scene in Superman 3 where the woman gets dragged into the computer and comes out as a cyborg.

I must have seen it when I was about 6 and it scared the Living crap out of me, had nightmares about it for months. Had no idea what film it was though.

Finally found it again a few years ago, and it's comical as an adult!

Nope, just watched it again. Still horrifying.

I watched a documentary about this a couple of years ago. I think it was on Youtube.

Off the back of this thread, rewatched The Descent. Yep, still absolutely horrifying (and heartbreaking, especially at the start. When she's running down the hospital corridors and the blackness is catching up with her... A beautiful visual metaphor of grief and depression.

This was made into a film 'The Last Descent' which I think is still available on Amazon Prime.

It's a good but uncomfortable watch knowing it's based on a true story. Absolutely awful way to die and I think the cave system is now closed because of this horrific accident.

Jaws.

I’m just putting this on my watch list. Anyone else like me just googling the shows listed to watch the scenes mentioned? Love a good horror/thriller 😀

I'd really recommend the podcast I mentioned upthread, called "Too Scary, didn't watch" I've ended up watching more horror films than I'd ever usually consider because of the curiosity I get from listening.

Discobooloo · 04/01/2026 18:43

The ending of the Mist. The film one not the TV series
