What's the scariest scene in a film that's stuck with you?

There's not many, but one being Wolf Creek, my mum let me watch it with her when I was 13 and it's stuck with me ever since. Another is The Descent from when I was a similar age - the caves and creatures have stuck with me ever since and I refuse to watch either of them again.

I’ve only ever watched one horror film (apart from American Werewolf in London which is more of a comedy I guess?) and it was The Vanishing, the original. Watching the ending was one of the worst experiences of my life and I wish I’d never seen it.

HornyHornersPinger · 02/01/2026 21:17

The scenes in The Exorcist where Regan's face is all green and evil looking. shudders...
Haven't watched a horror in probably 20 years now though and actively avoid them. Think there's enough horror in real life!

MoiraRoseVibes · 02/01/2026 21:18

Ooh so many.
I think one of my favourite most scary scenes is the last one in Blair Witch when the camera comes into the room in the deserted house and one of the guys is standing in the corner facing the wall. <shiver> So good!

HangryBrickShark · 02/01/2026 21:21

The Hostel franchise.
The thought of being at the mercy of a lunatic knowing that you are going to face abhorrent torture, cruelty and both mental and physical agony. Scares the life out of me.

ohyesido · 02/01/2026 21:22

That Paranormal Activity when the footprints appear in the flour. I nearly expired right there in the cinema

SleepDeprivedCatSlave · 02/01/2026 21:46

The end of Funny Games where the mother is pushed over the side of the boat to drown. Her husband, son and dog have already been murdered.

Whizzywhisk · 02/01/2026 21:49

The electrocution with a dry sponge on the green mile

MamaBobo · 02/01/2026 21:49

I don’t do horror now….but I watched The Changeling with George C Scott when I was in my early teens and it scared the living shit out of me. When he throws his late daughter’s ball off the bridge into the river and gets back to the house and the bloody ball comes bouncing down the stairs to meet him…shudder.

DawnBreaks · 02/01/2026 21:53

The scene in the Wicker Man where they set the fire to the effigy. Its just totally horrifying! I'm not sure if I'm more upset about the animals or Edward Woodward being incinerated!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 02/01/2026 21:54

That film with Guy Pearce. I’ll go look up the title and add it onto the bottom of this post. I swear I was SO furious and horrified and disgusted and upset. I don’t think I’ll ever really calm my feelings about that film. It disturbed my conscious self so profoundly I absolutely sobbed at the end.

Brimstone.

AphroditesSeashell · 02/01/2026 21:55

There's a stabbing scene towards the end of Saving Private Ryan that upset me terribly when I was about 8 months pregnant (hormones!) 18 odd years ago. I've never watched the film since, as it's stuck with me as being so horrible.

Generally though, even now, I dislike any TV or movie scenes where people are frightened; it upsets me.

Yes, The Hostel films for me too. I think because of the way the world is now, it could actually be happening in that part of the world and no one would care or seek to stop it. Millionaires getting their kicks.

sprigatito · 02/01/2026 21:56

There are a couple of scenes in The Others that genuinely terrified me. That film is often regarded as tame because there’s no gore or violence, but it’s one of the most frightening and unsettling films I’ve ever seen.

The scene in the original screenplay of The Woman In Black where the woman comes through the window…I had a full blown panic attack when I first saw it aged 11, and it gave me nightmares for years.

Anonanonanonagain · 02/01/2026 21:57

I hate horror movies and no idea why I watched this but decades later and I still get the heebies thinking of the movie The Ring but the Japanese version where Sadoko comes out of the well.

I may not sleep tonight thinking about it again.

NoIdontwatchbloodytraitors · 02/01/2026 21:57

Blair witch last scene when camera pans round and someone is in the corner

not a film but bob at the end of the bed in twin peaks

dayslikethese1 · 02/01/2026 22:01

Was it that bit where the kid has an old woman face sprigatito shudder

GrillaMilla · 02/01/2026 22:01

I remember watching Amityville Horror about 40 years ago, and ever since if I wake up in the middle of the night for a wee I'm still scared in case the display on our digital clock says 3:15. Scarred for life!

Namechangeyname · 02/01/2026 22:02

@lilybit2025 I agree with you about the Descent - even thinking about makes me feel sick with fear.

Threads (film from the early 80s about nuclear bombs hitting the UK) is truly, truly horrific. Quite the most disturbing and upsetting thing I've ever seen on TV. I was quite unwell for some time after watching it. I would recommend that anyone with fragile mental health avoid it.

SydneyCarton · 02/01/2026 22:02

The Descent scared the shit out of me. I hadn’t realised it was an actual gory horror as I thought it was going to be more about the psychological horror of being trapped underground and exploring the various tensions between the group, and then the cave monster things turned up and I was a gibbering wreck.

Yep, that bit…and the bit where you realise the three servants are ghosts

Latenightreader · 02/01/2026 22:04

I don't watch horror but the scariest scene in a film for me is Sleeping with the Enemy when she sees the cans lined up in the cupboard and realises who must have found her.

diggermama · 02/01/2026 22:04

Another vote for the final scene of Blair Witch. I’ve never gotten over it

I locked my bedroom door that night after coming home from cinema

TY78910 · 02/01/2026 22:06

Scenes from final destination. Shower with some kind of lead (like a fishing rod type) getting wrapped around someone and a lay down sunbed. Also lorries with tree trunks on them when driving behind.

CherryBlossom321 · 02/01/2026 22:08

I have two:

The Conjuring 2 - Lorraine’s daughter has wandered out into the hall and when Lorraine realises and finds her, she is trembling and staring down the hall. She lifts her arm, pointing and says, “Who is that?” And the camera reveals the nun standing at the end of the hall staring back at them.

The Conjuring - During hide and seek, as the children stare over their mother’s shoulder and one of them gasps. Bathsheba is on top of the wardrobe and jumps down towards them 🫣
