What's the scariest scene in a film that's stuck with you?

There's not many, but one being Wolf Creek, my mum let me watch it with her when I was 13 and it's stuck with me ever since. Another is The Descent from when I was a similar age - the caves and creatures have stuck with me ever since and I refuse to watch either of them again.

The Omen was the trapped under the ice

Thank you. I remember starting to watch it, but had to stop.

I’ll preface by saying: I love horror movies. Even shit, low budget ones. I’ve watched an endless number, and generally I’ve got a really strong stomach when it comes to gratuitous gore and violence in movies……

but THAT famous “kerb stomp” scene in American History X will never leave me. I watched the movie in my late teens, and it really shook me. I’ll never watch it again.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), great cult classic, but that scene in the house where the two brothers are trying to get their decrepit Grandpa to smash Sally’s head with a hammer over a bucket is just so chilling and uncomfortable to watch.

Also not a movie, but a TV show: Sons of Anarchy, there’s two scenes that really shook me emotionally.
Season 1, where Tig shoots Donna in the back of the head, thinking it was her husband Opie driving the car. In the build up, I kept telling myself “No, he’ll realise it’s Donna driving”……but nope. He just unloads into the back of her head.
Then later on, Season 5 I think? Where Jax, Opie, Tig and Chibs are all in jail and are told one of them has to fight to the death with other inmates in the basement room…..and Opie sacrifices himself. His death is just so raw and brutal. That last look of defeat on his face directly into the camera broke me. I cried for ages afterwards.

the American history x kerb scene is diabolical!!!

Can’t remember who was under the ice and if they got out

stargazer2012 · 03/01/2026 13:24

Also, not a horror but the rape scene in Irreversible 😳

LetThemFume · 03/01/2026 13:25

Genuinely, why do any of you watch these films or series? What is the pleasure in it?

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 03/01/2026 13:28

The scene in Superman 3 where the woman gets dragged into the computer and comes out as a cyborg.

I must have seen it when I was about 6 and it scared the Living crap out of me, had nightmares about it for months. Had no idea what film it was though.

Finally found it again a few years ago, and it's comical as an adult!

I watched so much horror , nothing is scary enough…. Till yesterday when I watched The Visit , specifically the scene where Grandma grabs the camera, kids had set up , and then a knife to go get them . For the first time in 20+ years I got goosebumps out of fear!!!

That’s such a good film. Though the nappy bit is vile.

babylamb4 · 03/01/2026 13:38

I agree with descent, I went to the cinema to watch that but had no clue what it was about and it scared the hell out of me. It’s my favourite horror film now and I watch it from time to time and it still scares me.

@stargazer2012i also agree about that scene. Everyone talks about the fire extinguisher and yes it’s bad but the rape scene is on another level. Before then I’d seen spit on your grave and last house on the left but irreversible left me feeling in a low mood for a good couple of weeks. Never again could I re-visit that

I love horror films. I don’t really watch any other genres.
No idea why but I just love the feeling of being freaked out.

Moonflower12 · 03/01/2026 13:41

@Dollyfloss

I have read it! And that also plays on my mind…
to the point where I don’t let the DDog out if my DH isn’t home, unless I’ve shut all the gates between the wood and the house, in daylight.

clinellwipe · 03/01/2026 13:46

Great thread.
For me it’s the final scene of Blair Witch Project , practically the whole of The Descent which I watched on a transatlantic night flight and screamed out loud (🫣).

The Shining is one of my favourite films and I’ve watched it so many times that I’ve become less scared , but the bathroom scene is frightening and also the scene where Wendy realises he’s just been typing the same line over and over, also the scene where Jack is walking down the corridor and he’s snarling and punching the air with rage. Terrifying. In fact I used some footage from The Shining for my Psychology dissertation experiment 🤣

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 03/01/2026 13:46

All the scenes in the Human Centipede, but there is one in particular that I often think about and how gross it is. I won't go into it here!

clinellwipe · 03/01/2026 13:47

Also , not what the thread is about (!) but the scariest book I’ve ever read is Pet Semetary especially now I have kids of my own. Can’t imagine the horror

Dollyfloss · 03/01/2026 13:50

The scene in Superman 3 where the woman gets dragged into the computer and comes out as a cyborg.

I was also traumatised by this as a child and used to have a recurring nightmare about it - and the scene where the kid is nearly mangled by a combine harvester 😂

It was on at Christmas and I forced myself to watch it to see if it was still as scary - the hayfield bit didn’t bother me but cyborg woman still did and I screamed 😂

Bubbles332 · 03/01/2026 13:57

Ugh I’m with you on The Descent. It’s scary as shit BEFORE the creatures turn up, it’s almost a relief when they do!

A pp mentioned American Werewolf in London- I actually found the decomposing friend hanging around extremely disturbing.

For me it’s got the be the end of the Blair Witch Project.

I don’t like gross scenes/ slasher films but I genuinely enjoy scary films. It’s an adrenaline rush! And I love the feeling of being completely engrossed in what’s happening. And once you’ve watched loads of them it’s just the joy of seeing people try to invent the genre and do something fresh - or groaning and laughing at the cheesy ones which follow the same old pattern.

The scenes in The Exorcist where Regan's face is all green and evil looking. shudders...
Haven't watched a horror in probably 20 years now though and actively avoid them. Think there's enough horror in real life!

The makeup they did in that film for that time is outstanding. She looked absolutely terrifying and still does.
I don’t know what it is but older horror films and effects look so much scarier. Maybe it helps that the film quality isn’t crystal clear like it is today

I’ll never forget my male friend’s high pitched scream at the cinema when the piece of wood comes through the windscreen in The Descent

Watership Down!! Had nightmares over that!

NoIdontwatchbloodytraitors · 03/01/2026 14:00

Quatermass when the guy takes his arm out and it’s all yukky - his eyes as well
earie

Does anyone remember quatermass?

I enjoy them. They don't frighten me; nothing really frightens me, except for the thought of something happening to my daughter.

I watch horror films because they calm me down and relax me. I like (fake, obvs) gore and blood. I don't know what that says about me but it's true.

It's just really interesting to me, as someone who doesn't get it, but grasps that a lot of people (the majority? Horrors seem to sell well?) do.

I love films too, and I love being engrossed in a film, but while I theory I get that for some people it's fun to be frightened by a film and tension and jumpscares just as it's fun to be frightened on a rollercoaster, I struggle to imagine enjoying watching someone being raped and tortured as I gather happens in The Hostel films.
