What's the scariest scene in a film that's stuck with you?

There's not many, but one being Wolf Creek, my mum let me watch it with her when I was 13 and it's stuck with me ever since. Another is The Descent from when I was a similar age - the caves and creatures have stuck with me ever since and I refuse to watch either of them again.

The scene in Don't Look Now when the little red-cloaked figure turns round... my blood still turns cold thinking about it!

The Descent with me too. The scene where the main characters husband and dd are killed, the bit where the sisters are trying to pulley themselves along the roof of the cave and the ending. I’ve only ever watched it once when it first came out but it properly scared me.

I also hate the scene in 28 weeks later where Robert Carlisle “turns” and his wife is strapped to the chair.

I’m a bit of a lightweight when it comes to horror films though - I won’t watch the properly scary ones. Dh put the latest “28” film in the series (is it 28 years later) on last night and I left the room during the first scene with the little kids watching teletubbies 😂

Salems Lot where the boy vampire taps at the window.

There are a couple of scenes in The Others that genuinely terrified me. That film is often regarded as tame because there’s no gore or violence, but it’s one of the most frightening and unsettling films I’ve ever seen.

The scene in the original screenplay of The Woman In Black where the woman comes through the window…I had a full blown panic attack when I first saw it aged 11, and it gave me nightmares for years.

Oh yes, the Others too - the bit when the “little girl” turns around 😱 you are so on edge throughout that whole film and I found the scene with Christopher Ecclestone really sad, it’s a really good film though and one I would watch again bc I know it has a happy sort of ending.

Opening scene of 28 Weeks Later

Notmyreality · 02/01/2026 22:13

Agree Blair Witch and The Descent.
Not watching either of them again!

OMarina · 02/01/2026 22:13

Another vote for The Descent, Blair Witch and Wolf Creek. Also any appearance of Bob in Twin Peak. Particularly the death of Maddy. Literally cannot understand why my Mum let me stay up to watch it at aged 9 when it was first on TV!

JDM625 · 02/01/2026 22:14

My nan used to have 2 single beds so I'd stay in 1 when I'd sleep over. She would always fall asleep with TV on. I was about 5 when the creepy film 'The Thing' came on. I recall seeing horrid alien/human/dog morphs drooling and exploding. It gave me nightmares for months.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 02/01/2026 22:14

Woman In Black (original) at the end when he is rowing on the lake and having a lovely time with his family, he's left the creepy house, the creepy village and the lady ghost behind, but then suddenly THERE SHE IS. STANDING ON BLOODY WATER. Then the tree falls on them and they die.

Such a happy film. 😆

shellyleppard · 02/01/2026 22:16

The tree coming to life in the poltergeist.... gives me the shivers every time you

laxydash · 02/01/2026 22:17

That scene in Hereditary where she see's her late mother standing in the shadows of her room. I think it scares me because that is the kind of experience many people have and because for her it was so ambivalent due to her poor relationship to her mother. The whole film is horrific, don't watch if you feel like sleeping anytime soon!

LoudSnoringDog · 02/01/2026 22:18

The woman floating over the bed in the original woman In black

NoIdontwatchbloodytraitors · 02/01/2026 22:20

I also don’t like the scene in The Godfather where the horses head is at the end of the bed

TomatoSandwiches · 02/01/2026 22:24

I fell asleep watching The Blair Witch but the lady in the bath in The Shining sets off my alarm bells, makes me want to run.

ALL of Funny Games is unsettling, moments that shouldn't make your body squirm do, very very well made, I never want to see it again. Ever.

It's a thriller but also horrific, The Zodiac has a scene where a couple are interpreted by the killer near a lake, it's day time, it looks serene and then they're tied up, gagged and she has to watch and listen to her boyfriend being stabbed, and then he does the same to her but it's not frenzied, he takes his time, she's still wriggling around after being stabbed trying to escape the knife, the sound is so visceral, it's sickening, makes you want to scream to not hear it. Ugh.

illsendansostotheworld · 02/01/2026 22:25

The bath scene in What Lies Beneath make me scream

The end of Funny Games where the mother is pushed over the side of the boat to drown. Her husband, son and dog have already been murdered.

Oh God I'd forgotten about that movie. One of the most disturbing films I've ever seen.

I went through a phase when I was younger of watching the most extreme horror or traumatic movies I could find (fuck knows why). One that stuck with me was The Snowtown Murders. So many disturbing scenes.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 02/01/2026 22:27

I still worry about seeing Bob from Twin Peaks in the mirror.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 02/01/2026 22:28

Thought of wolf creek as soon as I saw your title!! Awful film that should have never been made.

End of the bed too! Couldn’t go to toilet in the night for a week!

TheignT · 02/01/2026 22:28

Race with the Devil when they think they've got away and then you see their vehicle surrounded by the Satanists with burning torches.

Why not?

Tistheseason2025 · 02/01/2026 22:30

That scene in Luther where the killer slithers out from under the woman’s bed

Tammygirl12 · 02/01/2026 22:30

I don’t do horror films. I used to make myself aged 13-18. I have no idea why.

i agree - wolf creek was awful for me. Also th saw films. I also accidentally turned on the tv late one night and it was human centipede and I watched 15 mins and it was revolting
