Care to share the oddest thing house guests have done in your home this festive period?

We've had many guests over the festive period and most have been an absolute delight. However, have just waved off a few of DHs friends and they:

Removed phone chargers and toiletries left in the guest room/bathroom and taken home

Used (a used!) dish cloth to wipe their face then replaced on the sink

Complained we won't allow scary/violent TV until our young children are in bed

WTF?

Edited for typos

I feel like I might have to defend the toilet roll users amongst us...

I have a post birth injury that had made getting clean after a No.2 a bit of an ordeal. At home I use wipes or shower but can't always away from home, especially if there is no bathroom bin. So unfortunately that means a lot of loo roll to get completely clean.

I used to have the most horrific periods which also involved a lot of loo roll to get tidied up if I didn't have wipes to hand.

Other people might have IBS or conditions that mean the use a bit more than average.

@BigTubOfLard Thanks for the useful advice. Are we still sitting, or standing up at this point?🤔

Liquidacrobat · 03/01/2026 14:08

My visiting adult stepson got up on his first morning here at 11am and had a (long) shower, then proceeded to have a second shower at 2pm (he hadn’t been for a run or anything like that). Thankfully he didn’t do it on the other days but it had me scratching my head as to why!

It’s always ‘sherry o’clock’ somewhere on the planet …

why specifically your left hand
my left hand is rubbish

Also want to know what difference left hand makes

BIL spends most of the time having a nap - then goes to bed really early as he is tired. MIL won’t join in with anything if he isn’t there too so he isn’t left out. Drives me up the wall I’d far rather he doesn’t turn up.

Dontlickthebin · 03/01/2026 14:17
  1. Brought an (unwrapped) Happy Meal gift as a present for DS

  2. Wiped his shoe clean with the jay cloth from the kitchen and put it back. When confronted replied with something along the lines of "But I want to look smart when I go out..."

(Different guests btw)

I invited my immediate family round one evening over the festive period, it was over dinner time and said I would do pizza and party food for everyone. Probably spent close to about £100. No one ate anything.

I had to throw the vast majority away, it was all food i know they liked. I have no idea why they didn’t have anything but I’m still a bit upset about it.

On WLI’s and haven’t told anyone?

Had too much festive food already and didn’t fancy it? But if so, they should have said in the chat so you’d know better how many to cater for.

Do they usually eat when at yours?

I had no idea people still used flannels - last used by me when bed bathing old folks in hospitals 20 years ago. They were frowned on then. Breeding grounds for bacteria. Foul things 😅

I wash them at 60 in a big batch and never use them more than once… so no bacteria left to breed.

My mother had conveniently forgotten my disabled 6 year old ever existed - proceeded to walk in with my two sons gifts, sat down and said "oh no! I left DDs gifts at home... how old is she again? I'll get them later" never turned up. Thankfully my DD has such severe disabilities she doesn't remember/ doesn't understand christmas and gifts etc.
My FIL proudly walked in (tasked with getting the gammon for boxing day) with some wafer thin ham instead!

That's so sad. I'm so sorry that your mum behaved in such a horrible & dismissive way towards your daughter.

The gammon/wafer thin ham did make me laugh though. It's like the year that Tesco decided to substitute my christmas turkey crown for a packet of wafer thin turkey slices!! On Christmas eve!!

Who provides flannels for guests? They are considered personal items (you don't get them in hotels) and not everyone uses one. I haven't used one in about 50 years.

We do.
Towels, flannels, footmats etc.

Guests have separate bathrooms and know to put used items into the bath so we are aware it has been used (like a hotel).

We also provide some (nice) toiletries (shower gel, hand soap, hand cream etc) but have never noticed any of it going missing when they leave.🙂

Eh?

Not sure The Great MN Flannel Thread is worthy of such poetic musings, but I for one enjoyed it, staring languidly into the middle distance as the blue-grey smoke of my cigarette dissipates into the ether. And - like her - is gone. 😂

MySilentLions · 03/01/2026 14:39

WheresMyWimpleCrimper · 02/01/2026 23:59

I haven't used a flannel in decades. I use cleanser and toner on cotton wool pads. It's never crossed my mind to supply flannels for guests!

Reusable flannels are much better for the environment than cotton pads, so if you can switch you’ll be saving lots of energy and water resources.

MySilentLions · 03/01/2026 14:43

QuickBrown · 03/01/2026 00:18

For those unsure how to pack a used flannel - I rarely remember a plastic food bag for it, so top options are:

  1. Take a really old one that is at the end of its service. Bin it on the last day.
  2. Wring it out when done. Then roll it inside your pyjamas to be laundered when you get home. I always wear clothes at night in other people's houses and a change of bed necessitates a change of pj's.

I had often packed a damp facecloth in a (clean!) dog poo bag found in a coat pocket in my younger days.

I have now bought a nice toiletry bag with a waterproof pocket just for my face cloths! I need one to take off my cleansing balm properly.

This is from the past -
She invited herself to spend the summer with us.
That didn’t surprise me, but it really irked my husband.
In her defense, I loved her my whole life.
Husband only had just met her.
We spent the days floating on the pool, drinking strong margaritas & reading all the rags. There was some guy from New York that was in every rag every week and we raked him over the coals. Turns out this was Trump but it was the first time we’d ever heard about him.
It was 1987.
We thought Donald Trump was a joke.
My husband complained to me about her - not about what she did to him, but about the dishes she left out, or the milk or her clothes.
Yeah - I’d known that for my entire 31 years. What else was new?
But he never said her or me.
Because if my ex-husband had threatened me with the ol’ her or me, crapola,
I would’ve chosen her.
Hahaha

Are you still drunk on those margaritas? Confused

Nevernonono · 03/01/2026 05:40

Cotton wool and cleanser and have done for as long as I can remember !

Flannels are not for me!

Quite wasteful though. You won’t be reusing cotton wool like a flannel and the packaging is plastic.
Flannels may seem old fashioned but they do the job and environmentally friendly.

Try Wype. I'm evangelical about the stuff

Get a dog sitter. No one should have to deal with your stinking filthy animal in their house.

Bit rude!
Dog owners really ought to realise not everyone will find their pet tolerable. But equally, for many people dogs are part of the family and no more filthy than a toddler.

We had a canine guest this Christmas. Approximately 95% delightful, and 5% absolute bellend. He will be allowed back.

Poodlelove · 03/01/2026 15:06

Flannels remind me of old people and strip washes.

A family member took all my old baby clothes. Whilst staying for a few days they asked my DPs for my newborn clothes for their pregnant best friend, DPs apologised but said that they had already promised them to a good friend. That seemed fine and there was no issue for the rest of the stay. The family member somehow worked out where DM was storing the clothes and somehow snuck them out to their car and took the lot with them. DPs discovered they had gone days later and had to make an embarrassed apology to their friend.

You need to get those clothes back. Tell them you'll call the police if they don't returned them. They are stolen items.

What did the canine guest do to be a bell end ? 😁

Im newly disabled and whilst i wait for my riser recliner chair my son builds up the sofa end with a booster cushion and other props. I hosted a curry party and came back to find a lazy arse teenager sitting in my spot. Even more infuriating was his mother didn't tell him to move.
I was fuming. I nearly died last year and the vast majority of these relatives sat on their arses whist i cooked and served.
Not happening in 2026 although ive done it for 26 years. No one offeted to wash a plate!

So I hope you told him to move and explained why you needed that space?

MySilentLions · 03/01/2026 15:13

Not to mention the irritating and self obsessed way in which people enter a long thread that has moved way on since a particular comment and add their twopennorth as if a) nobody will have already said it and b) their take is the most interesting and relevant. At least on a thread like this it's just boring, unlike the important threads about serious stuff where people join after days/weeks and respond to the first post as if nothing has been said since then, repeating pointless or dangerous nonsense.

I’m sure every contribution you make is original and scintillating. Hmm This is a chat forum, people are just chatting. It’s not that deep.

Not this Christmas but previously friends with a toddler stayed.

As we were saying bye and leaving, they tinkly laughed and said the toddler had thrown a potty full of wee down the stairs while they were packing up, so I'd probably want to shampoo my stair carpet 😬

omg gross!!! Hope they were never invited back!
