Care to share the oddest thing house guests have done in your home this festive period?

We've had many guests over the festive period and most have been an absolute delight. However, have just waved off a few of DHs friends and they:

Removed phone chargers and toiletries left in the guest room/bathroom and taken home

Used (a used!) dish cloth to wipe their face then replaced on the sink

Complained we won't allow scary/violent TV until our young children are in bed

WTF?

DM. She is lovely in most ways but often goes through my cupboards and takes it upon herself to dispose of anything with a quarter or less of the substance left in the bottle. Then after she leaves I spend ages looking for the last of the balsamic/honey/whatever. ARGH!
Weirdly she and DF are very Puritan and frugal about other things!

Guilty. I’ve lived and worked in many different countries and households. All my host families laugh about how much loo roll I go through. My Mum and Dad too when I was a child. Also my DH! Unfortunately, my DC take after me! Loo roll eaters 😂

What are you doing with it?

Unicornsatonalilo · 02/01/2026 09:08

Not christmas, but I once invited my aunt round for lunch (id just moved into my first house and was so proud of my new home)

She pulled out her Dyson from the boot along with a massive bag of cleaning products and walked in,scrubbed my house from top to bottom, ate lunch, cleaned up again and left

I let her get on with it!

(For context, shes the cleanest person I know,my standards, like any other person, are a bit lower than hers-id eat my dinner off a floor shes cleaned and I half expected something like this)

Nothing like half of these but one guest watched all of the new episodes of Stranger Things in the middle of the night as they became available on Netflix. Then proceeded to nap most of the next day. 🤨

My guest also did this...it was the 1am drop that did it

MIL walked into the bathroom while I was in it and just stood there clutching her washbag until I left. I told her the other bathroom was free and she was welcome to use it but she said “oh no, don’t worry” and just stood there waiting for me to leave

🙈😯

I am fascinated by the door handle. What did they think they were unscrewing? Why were they unscrewing anything? We (well I) need to know more about the accidental unscrewing of a door handle

I want to know the reason for this weirdness as well 🤣

Yep! I would have just waited until I got home and avoided social media but 🤷‍♀️

Vound · 02/01/2026 09:39

These are hilarious!

I do wonder if the phone chargers might be an honest mistake. Each assumes the other unpacked and plugged in their chargers on arrival and someone dutifully packs them up at the end. We are always on at kids to remember the chargers, they are so easily forgotten, and we're not used to having any other than our own available. But maybe that is a bit far fetched given they also took the toiletries.

ilovepixie · 02/01/2026 09:45

I need to know about the door handle too!

Hahahaha no problems!

She has ocd and very hyacinth bucket (thats her nickname)

She would pop over and you'd be holding your breath until she'd gone as you just knew she'd be judging the state of your skirting boards (never cleaned them in my life) or the fact you had washing hanging up

Adored her while I was growing up-shes one hell of a lady and a force of nature

There was a recent thread where the OP (and many respondents!) were saying their family members would things from their house - which they’d then see displayed there, or be served there.

So totally unsubtle about it too.

The mind boggles - both my and my in-laws have many eccentricities but I cannot imagine them doing this (!)

Have you watched series 2 of Colin From Accounts?! Maybe watch it with your friend...

Ha! Was about to say this - identical scenario 😂

Not a house guest but, my in laws turned up at 8.30 this morning to wish us a happy new year. Knowing we were out last night and would’ve been up late. My mum had stayed over to babysit for us and had taken the baby out for a morning stroll. I blearily got up and opened the door and when they said they’d popped round to see the baby and I explained he wasn’t in, they seemed a bit annoyed with me. They made moves to come in but I said “boyfriend is still asleep and you’ve woken me, to be honest I’m going to head back to bed and get another hour of sleep if I can” and MIL replied “okay I can see we’re not wanted here.” Ridiculous!!!

Ouch ! You handled that well, I’d have been so cross …

zacsGranny · 02/01/2026 10:14

MY MIL lives much further away now, but when she lived nearer she used to come around and stop her electric car on the road outside. She couldn't park for toffee so it was literally in the middle of the road. DH had to rush out and park it on our drive and plug it in to charge using our electricity.
Whilst it was charging she would mooch about the house and her favourite thing was to weigh herself on our scales, which were digital and glass and we kept them leaning against the wall in the bathroom. She never left them as she found them and we would hear a mighty crash as they fell. Once they hit DH as he walked into the room.
She also used all my toiletries.

That’s not odd!-It’s fabulous! I think many of us would love a relative like her. What a fantastic housewarming present.

My daughter's best friend does something similar. We have three toilets in the house but she'll go to the nearest one and if it's occupied, will try to open the locked door. Occupant will shout out "I'm in here, use one of the others" but she stays immediately outside (a bit disconcerting if you're trying to have a poo in peace or deal with your period) and repeats trying to open the door every 30 seconds or so even though she knows you could not possibly have come out yet.

I got quite cross with her when she came for a sleepover a few days ago as the bolt had started to lean out of its fixings when she repeatedly tried to force the door when my son was in the shower. (Not to mention I'm sure her parents would be horrified if she saw a naked adult male!) She just shrugged and said "well he was taking ages". I asked why she didn't use one of the other toilets and she just shrugged again.

She's 12 and quite intelligent, apparently!

MIL gave my 9 month old with a milk allergy cheese and crackers then pretended she didn't know how he got them when he was in the high chair next to her.

I’m the guest not the householder but they probably found it weird that I put my own sheets on the bed and had a bath at 9pm Xmas day.

Their fabric softener always makes my eczema explode like nowhere else. So my sheets it is. And I’m teetotal and they’d become annoying drunks by 9pm so took myself off to the bath.

As far as your guests go I’d imagine the chargers were an accident and the dish cloth was because you didn’t provide a flannel in the guest bathroom maybe.

Who provides flannels for guests? They are considered personal items (you don't get them in hotels) and not everyone uses one. I haven't used one in about 50 years.

ohyesido · 02/01/2026 15:37

I’d probably have packed the charger thinking it was my DH’s and he’d pack the toiletries assuming they were mine…

I did the opposite of this, I took some toileties back to my Dsis with some bits that DN left and it turns out they were DS1's that she bought for him. 🙈

We've had one belter this year. It was highlighted pre Christmas when it was announced that she had decided she was just going to "pop" into the kitchen and make a quick bread sauce as she wasn't the biggest fan of shop bought. She'd do that Christmas Eve or Christmas morning depending on when she had time - that would be the kitchen where Christmas Eve dinner for 20, Christmas morning breakfast for 18 and Christmas dinner for 26 was being prepared/cooked... She was very put out when her partner had to tell her no, shop bought would have to do.

Same person then made no fewer than five "helpful" suggestions on Christmas Eve about how the room could be set up better. Even after her partner explained we'd tried all the multiple ways over the years.

At the table she scored everything out of 10 and gave helpful tips to the cooks (thankfully not me) on how to improve next year.

She also announced at 10pm on Christmas Eve that she wanted them to stay over. They were staying at the hotel literally at the bottom of the street and her partner never stays as he snores like an absolute freight train. Even when I don't already have 6 house guests on top of my usual household he doesn't stay. She actually argued with him that he was being silly and she was missing out.

As we all split the cost of the food and drink (it's been that way for years and it was several family members that insisted on it once it was suggested it was hosted at our house each year). We don't just as such - this year neither DH or I were in the trio of cooks. We just happen to own the space! This guest made multiple comments, until told to stop by her partner, about us charging ticket prices to come round.

I don't think we'll be seeing her next year as her partner was rather embarrassed.
