Care to share the oddest thing house guests have done in your home this festive period?

We've had many guests over the festive period and most have been an absolute delight. However, have just waved off a few of DHs friends and they:

Removed phone chargers and toiletries left in the guest room/bathroom and taken home

Used (a used!) dish cloth to wipe their face then replaced on the sink

Complained we won't allow scary/violent TV until our young children are in bed

WTF?

Edited for typos

They had exclusive use of a bathroom and I put 7 loo rolls in it the day that they arrived. I have loo roll storage racks and I remember it was 7 as they all hold 6 and I had one rogue roll!

Perhaps send them a message asking if they need any more toilet rolls?

There are medical reasons people need extra loo paper.

We had a guest that didn’t surface until 11/11.30am then went back to bed in the afternoon.

I've got some of those washable makeup remover pads, l got mine from Superdrug, but l've also seen similar ones in Tesco. I think a lot of places do them.

I would have great fun with the SIL with Christmas tree in every room , even a mini one in the toilet .

Poodlelove · 03/01/2026 13:06

How many toilet rolls per week are used in your houses ?
I am trying the left hand trick today to reduce my usage.

Poodlelove · 03/01/2026 13:09

I was telling my colleague today about this thread , she informs me that her 85 year old uncle and Aunt were being romantic at 1am on boxing day , Auntie didn't realise that the second bed pulled out from underneath to make a double bed and she rolled over and broke the bed , they both ended up on the floor naked.
Colleagues father thought his brother had dropped dead and walked in to find them both.

Every house I’ve ever stayed in… how else would people wash their face and take off their makeup? And you can’t take your own because then if you use it the morning you leave it’s wet in the suitcase.

I had no idea people still used flannels - last used by me when bed bathing old folks in hospitals 20 years ago. They were frowned on then. Breeding grounds for bacteria. Foul things 😅

Not christmas, but I once invited my aunt round for lunch (id just moved into my first house and was so proud of my new home)

She pulled out her Dyson from the boot along with a massive bag of cleaning products and walked in,scrubbed my house from top to bottom, ate lunch, cleaned up again and left

I let her get on with it!

(For context, shes the cleanest person I know,my standards, like any other person, are a bit lower than hers-id eat my dinner off a floor shes cleaned and I half expected something like this)

Your aunt is very welcome to come for lunch at mine anytime.

I love that you just let her get on with it rather than being offended.

Off to buy a flannel

Just back - got a 3 for 2 deal at Dunelm. The till lady said there’d been an unusual run on flannels this morning.

Not this Christmas but previously friends with a toddler stayed.

As we were saying bye and leaving, they tinkly laughed and said the toddler had thrown a potty full of wee down the stairs while they were packing up, so I'd probably want to shampoo my stair carpet 😬

Oh God, yes, the dreaded tinkly laugh.

We had friends who have a daughter who has Downs and when she was 11 or 12 she started spitting at people if they "were too close to her" ie playing in the same room or sitting next to her at the dinner table. When my children complained about it we also got the tinkly laugh and her parents acting as if it was totally normal. No apologies.

If they had warned us beforehand we could have warned our children or they could have been at my parents' house instead.

The worst part is that the mother ( with the tinkly laugh) works with disabled children and knows very well that people with Downs can learn manners but she and her husband just never bothered correcting either of their daughters when they misbehaved.

How could they be breeding grounds for bacteria? Surely they got washed at hot temperatures after each use?

Dogs are like children. I have a toy poodle and if I was visiting family I would want to take him with me rather than leaving him home alone. He's a lovely little dog, in fact nicer than many people I know!

Nonsense.

Oh yeah, another thing the MIL does is that when towels are thread bare and no longer usable as towels, she cuts them up and uses them as cleaning cloths to wipe down the kitchen worktops and the kitchen table! YUK!

What's wrong with that?

Hello87abc · 03/01/2026 13:28

Please please tell me you called them out and got your stuff back whilst reminding them you’re not a hotel

I know her very well
It's not done as spite,it's done out of love
It's literally her love language-that and feeding people
I knew she would do it so cleaned up,let her in and left her to it
Shame that it didnt stay as spotless but made her happy and thats all that mattered

TOILET PAPER OVER USERS ANONYMOUS

Let me change your life.

  1. Use your left hand.
  2. Reach around behind your backside - yes - way behind with your left hand and wipe from front to back. This forces you to spread your cheeks wide making it much easier to get the job done in only 2 or 3 swipes.

Try it today: nobody but you can see your awkward first attempts but they'll soon notice the massive reduction in paper usage.

You're welcome.

Diagram please

@GreenSmithing we need to know more about the door handle!

Am I the only person who lathers up their hands well and washes themselves with said hands?? Like when you wash your hands - for which you don't need a flannel!

Edited

I can do this for my body but need a flannel to scrub my face.

Fimofriend · 03/01/2026 13:19

No they were patients' own , and festered in wash bags and lockers. Or hung over locker doors by patients.
Patient owned flannels/clothes/towels don't go to hospital laundries.
Soiled clothes go straight in a knotted plastic bag and stored in lockers until took home.
We used paper roll if they didn't have a flannel - some wards started stocking soft, once only disposable wash cloths(hopefully they all do now).
We had disposable "netty knickers" for those without underwear.

This is from the past -
She invited herself to spend the summer with us.
That didn’t surprise me, but it really irked my husband.
In her defense, I loved her my whole life.
Husband only had just met her.
We spent the days floating on the pool, drinking strong margaritas & reading all the rags. There was some guy from New York that was in every rag every week and we raked him over the coals. Turns out this was Trump but it was the first time we’d ever heard about him.
It was 1987.
We thought Donald Trump was a joke.
My husband complained to me about her - not about what she did to him, but about the dishes she left out, or the milk or her clothes.
Yeah - I’d known that for my entire 31 years. What else was new?
But he never said her or me.
Because if my ex-husband had threatened me with the ol’ her or me, crapola,
I would’ve chosen her.
Hahaha

Eh?

Oldandgreyer · 03/01/2026 14:02

I'm one for leaving things behind I'm afraid.
Even double checking everywhere there's a risk I'll leave my phone charger. I've tried to repack it every time I've used it to stop this happening.
I have also left bed socks at hotels because I've not remembered to pull them out of the bed when I've got up and packed.
