Care to share the oddest thing house guests have done in your home this festive period?

CharlieWeasleysWife · 01/01/2026 15:32

We've had many guests over the festive period and most have been an absolute delight. However, have just waved off a few of DHs friends and they:

Removed phone chargers and toiletries left in the guest room/bathroom and taken home

Used (a used!) dish cloth to wipe their face then replaced on the sink

Complained we won't allow scary/violent TV until our young children are in bed

WTF?

Edited for typos

Oh yeah, another thing the MIL does is that when towels are thread bare and no longer usable as towels, she cuts them up and uses them as cleaning cloths to wipe down the kitchen worktops and the kitchen table! YUK!

Why do you consider that an awful thing to do? -they are washed and clean! She is recycling them rather than sending them straight to landfill. Seems quite sensible me.
Everything else you said…..clearly not ok!

My mother had conveniently forgotten my disabled 6 year old ever existed - proceeded to walk in with my two sons gifts, sat down and said "oh no! I left DDs gifts at home... how old is she again? I'll get them later" never turned up. Thankfully my DD has such severe disabilities she doesn't remember/ doesn't understand christmas and gifts etc.
My FIL proudly walked in (tasked with getting the gammon for boxing day) with some wafer thin ham instead!

If my mother had done that she would never see any of my children again.

You need to get those clothes back. Tell them you'll call the police if they don't returned them. They are stolen items.

I think this happened when pp was a baby though?

Not christmas, but I once invited my aunt round for lunch (id just moved into my first house and was so proud of my new home)

She pulled out her Dyson from the boot along with a massive bag of cleaning products and walked in,scrubbed my house from top to bottom, ate lunch, cleaned up again and left

I let her get on with it!

(For context, shes the cleanest person I know,my standards, like any other person, are a bit lower than hers-id eat my dinner off a floor shes cleaned and I half expected something like this)

Can you send her round to my house

Am I the only person who lathers up their hands well and washes themselves with said hands?? Like when you wash your hands - for which you don't need a flannel!

Edited

You aren’t the only one! Obviously personal choice but the horror the flannel users have that one could actually use one’s hands for face washing is funny.

I did once take a flannel (well a very very small towel) from a hotel and used it to wipe my sweat soaked brow whilst in the far east.

I’m sure every contribution you make is original and scintillating. Hmm This is a chat forum, people are just chatting. It’s not that deep.

You know what - I often open a thread that looks entertaining and I either don't bother posting because it's been going for a while and I don't have anything entertaining or useful to add, or I skim the OP's posts and the recent posts to see the character and tone of the chat before I join in. That's how I converse in real life and I don't see why it should be different on a message forum. It's not deep or shallow, it's just normal social behaviour. I assume you don't crash up to a group of people in the pub deep in conversation and loudly give your opinion on something already covered that they have moved on from as if your contribution is the most valuable thing ever? Well maybe you do, I don't know 🤷🏼‍♀️

Choccyp1g · 03/01/2026 13:23

What's wrong with that?

Nothing, it’s sensible recycling . People are absolutely bonkers . Our window cleaning cloth was our daughter’s cot sheet.

KermitTheToad · 03/01/2026 14:05

@BigTubOfLard Thanks for the useful advice. Are we still sitting, or standing up at this point?🤔

Sitting. Should have mentioned that in my original post.

Timeforanewgame · 03/01/2026 16:01

I don't get all the drama over wet flannels. Does no one use a wash bag anymore? My shower gel, shampoo, face cloth and shower puff all go in my wash bag. I use a plastic one (not a lined one) because I know I'll be putting wet things in it. Face cloth and shower puff have as much water removed as possible and then go into the wash bag.

I travel a lot for work and some hotels provide flannels but some don't (especially budget hotels)

Not a house guest but, my in laws turned up at 8.30 this morning to wish us a happy new year. Knowing we were out last night and would’ve been up late. My mum had stayed over to babysit for us and had taken the baby out for a morning stroll. I blearily got up and opened the door and when they said they’d popped round to see the baby and I explained he wasn’t in, they seemed a bit annoyed with me. They made moves to come in but I said “boyfriend is still asleep and you’ve woken me, to be honest I’m going to head back to bed and get another hour of sleep if I can” and MIL replied “okay I can see we’re not wanted here.” Ridiculous!!!

My mum was like this (as are many mothers and MILS - it's narcissism) and in the end I started saying "The correct response is 'Oh my goodness I'm so sorry I woke you; go back to bed!'" 😁

Haha I love that, I’ll have to try that next time!!!!

Raiseaglassforeverynote · 03/01/2026 16:11

Possibly a misunderstanding though?
I think people think parents of babies/small children will be up early, because they usually have to be,

Ponoka7 · 03/01/2026 16:16

@Liverpool52
@quarrybanks
The Hilton and Hamilton by Hilton (Liverpool city center), also the Leonardo (Liverpool) have flannels, In packets, like tissues. Although I live on Merseyside, were stay over when we go to a concert.

The sub debate about flannels / facecloths on here has been peak mumsnet - multiple people dogmatically explaining the presence /absence of said fabric squares in hotels / guest bathrooms with added "this is my way of cleaning my face and I can't comprehend that other people are choosing to do it differently/ wrongly"

I must admit I've been sitting on my hands to avoid the temptation to explain my flannel/facecloth routine. In fact it is so tempting to add it here, just a couple more sentences!!!!!!!!!!!! and why it is so much better than sploshing around!

Fab thread, makes me even more pleased that we never have visitors.

Hollyleaves · 03/01/2026 16:27

LamonicBibber1 · 01/01/2026 15:52

None of that here. But a guest once politely brought an edible treat, presented it to me as a gift with a flourish, then clearly decided they wanted it back for themselves and took most of it home, cross country 😂

I laugh now, I didn't at the time, I was really crushed that it was somehow a comment on my hospitality or worth to them or something, as they've gleefully said that they "show love with food". I'd offered a pack up to take with. They had plentiful food at mine. It was really weird, them fumbling about and rewrapping the tin foil and bundling it away..

I also once shared a hotel room with a close friend and they had a shower and wet every single part of the floor and just left it, actual proper puddles, and left wet towels on the ground etc. They've never done it before or since at other places we've stayed, it was really out of character and awkward.

Our adult ND son used to do this literally got out of the shower and walked to his room leaving wet everywhere. He just doesn’t see things in the same way. Went on for years.

Doesn't everyone, in this eco conscious age?

My parents used to use old pants (of the big variety) as dusters. No matter how many times they'd been washed I found it gross!

ManyPigeons · 03/01/2026 14:19

I wash them at 60 in a big batch and never use them more than once… so no bacteria left to breed.

If you never use them more than once why do you wash them?

MIL who had wine and chocolates lined up to give to me as a present, then decided to distribute amoung the rest of the household at dinner.

Superhansrantowindsor · 03/01/2026 16:51

MIL still has Dh’s 50 year old Terry nappies to clean the floor.

Not Christmas. But I really needed to mention, when my Husband and I got married,we held the wedding party at our flat.My mother & step farther stayed the night of our wedding :0(

In the morning they asked if I wanted to keep any left overs from the wedding food & drink.I said no, take the lot, they did!

I was shocked that they would be so petty. They took the glasses, which belonged to them anyway. But pretty much took all the food & drink! & Cut a huge chunk of wedding cake to take with them.

I will never forget that day almost 42 years ago! Truly awful way to treat the Bride & Groom!

What did the canine guest do to be a bell end ? 😁

A bit of theft followed by guarding and refusal to "drop it".
To be fair to the dog, it was unwise of BIL to remove his denture and not secure it, especially after seeing what happened to the dropped sock 😂
