Why can’t we have drone displays instead of fireworks?

My poor dog is wrapped around me with fear. Every time there is a bang I get a start. The point of fireworks is surely the look rather than the sound?? And as for letting random idiots buy them in bloody Lidl and set them off in their back gardens - this is insane. I live in a densely populated suburb of London. Setting off fireworks here is so fkn antisocial. Grr.

I blame the shops for selling them and the government for allowing them to be sold, they should be organised events only but no idea which costs the most.

Itsmetheflamingo · 31/12/2025 21:16

Drone displays remind me of that awful New Year’s Eve in 2020 😭

adenoEndo · 31/12/2025 21:17

Why are dogs so prone to being this scared of fireworks ?

Chasbots · 31/12/2025 21:18

Yep, going to have to go fetch my chooks into the house shortly. Lost one to fireworks a few years ago, died of stress.

Used to go out with the dog as she was terrified but she's psssed away now. Hopefully, new dogs won't be as stressed.

Nobumsonthetable · 31/12/2025 21:18

Happily my brain has deleted all memories of 2020 😂.
I just saw a photo of NYE in Seoul or somewhere and the drone display looked amazing. So it can be done.
And I agree it’s mad that it’s legal for anyone to buy them!

@adenoEndo I believe it’s because they can’t see the source of this huge noise. They feel danger but can’t make sense of it which makes them panic.

Because a drone display is no where near as colourful, bright and exciting as fireworks.

Yet to see a drone show worthy enough to replace fireworks.

Oh that makes sense I was just thinking there are plenty of loud noises out and about but I guess like you say they can see the source with those

Itsmetheflamingo · 31/12/2025 21:23

I’m surprised you say that, I thought the Seoul drone display was rubbish. So slow and makes such basic shapes

ComewithmeIntotheseaofLove · 31/12/2025 21:23

I never understand it with all the health and safety mania that you can still buy them!

Nobumsonthetable · 31/12/2025 21:23

Have a @Frogbear have a google for the Korean displays.
Also sorry but ‘ colourful bright and exciting’ - we aren’t toddlers!

Why do you think any animal with hearing far more sensitive than ours would be scared of a sudden really loud bang?

It's not just dogs, they're just one of the animals that lots of people see the reactions of. Horses, cattle, cats, llamas, sheep, chickens - all sensible enough to be scared of (to them) inexplicable earsplitting explosions and massive flashes of flame. Humans are the odd ones out.

And why can't we just have drone displays? Because then thicko Dave from down the road wouldn't have an excuse to lager up and set fire to things in his back garden. I promise I'm not usually this grumpy but we've had fireworks for hallowe'en, Diwali, bonfire night, Christmas, new years, and most of the numpties setting them off haven't got a clue how to do it without sending at least one rocket into someone's front windows or garden shed.

What?! Are you serious? 🧐

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 31/12/2025 21:34

The horses on our yard are terrified, not just dogs. It’s other animals, veterans, PTSD survivors. They’ve been going off since before dark here.

Tbf I can understand the question- it only seems to be something people have started talking about so much in the last 5-10 years.

umblewead · 31/12/2025 21:36

I’ve seen combined fireworks and drone displays, and the drones are pretty but quite slow.

This year I chatted to the drone operator/provider before it started - I was working there. There were LOTS of drones and must have cost a fortune. It doesn’t really compare with fireworks for a showy event.

Why can’t we have drone displays instead of fireworks?
workingcocker · 31/12/2025 21:38

We saw some huge drone shows in Dubai recently- dull as ditchwater

You don’t have to be a toddler to enjoy fireworks 🙄

And I did see the Korean display - nothing special tbh. Too slow to have the big impact of celebrating the start of a new year.

Because the owners expect them to be and reassure excessively to the point it reinforces that there is something terrifying they need protecting from?
I’ve had 8 dogs and 12 cats.
5 cats and 3 dogs were scared on first encounter. Within a year, all chose to watch and enjoy.

CalmShaker · 31/12/2025 21:42

I agree I really dislike fireworks too but drones are not at the level of development yet where they are usable imho, we went to a drone 'bonfire night' and one landed on my head and I was in hospital for 72hrs

Kittkats · 31/12/2025 21:43

Oh, and my horses were fine too (though one never got past her fear of elephants).

Nobumsonthetable · 31/12/2025 21:43

But why do we need to let off fireworks to celebrate a new year? It’s not exactly something we have achieved, it will happen regardless.

Because this year has been shit. Unbelievably shit.
