Why can’t we have drone displays instead of fireworks?

My poor dog is wrapped around me with fear. Every time there is a bang I get a start. The point of fireworks is surely the look rather than the sound?? And as for letting random idiots buy them in bloody Lidl and set them off in their back gardens - this is insane. I live in a densely populated suburb of London. Setting off fireworks here is so fkn antisocial. Grr.

I took my dog to the pub on 5/11 the year we got him without realising the date, he wasn’t phased when they started, reading further it seems that there are a lot of dogs who aren’t bothered.

I see fireworks as similar to owning dogs tbh. Some people absolutely adore them and it makes them happy. Some people hate them, but have to put up with them because other people want them in their lives.

Exactly this!

@Bloozie why so snippy? I was genuinely curious eg if certain breeds are more predisposed.

Bloozie's post was not snippy. Hive mind is an accepted term in animal behaviour, referring to animals that behave uniformly as a group, so that the behaviour of one is shared by all others, such as bee swarming.

What Bloozie is saying is that animals do not behave uniformly. 'Hive mind' would only be insulting or snippy if they were referring to a person having this, for example if they said that you had it. It was a normal animal behaviour comment.

Well I for one enjoyed watching the fireworks on TV and the various displays outside my window!

Don’t really care if that makes me a toddler, a dick, a moron or any other insults thrown my way on this thread, as all the fireworks did bring me joy!

Happy new year everyone!

Yes to this. At least fireworks are only twice a year. Bloody dogs are everywhere these days.

We watched the London fireworks and thought they were awful. So many of them going off at once, constantly with stupid music. There was no art or wow factor to them, it was over the top and actually got boring. What a waste of money!

How very dare they enjoy fireworks on the TV!
🙄

Shutuptrevor · 01/01/2026 00:47

When I come to power* I will mandate the use of silent fireworks / drones only other than big public displays, where you have to have a licence and leaflet the nearby streets to let people know start/finish times.

I have had dogs not bothered at all but currently have an elderly dog who is absolutely beside himself with fear and distress this year and it’s so horrible, nothing calms him.

*Three weeks on Tuesday.

Ydkiml · 01/01/2026 00:55

And I’m petrified of dogs but some owners still allow them to run upto me when out walking . Fed up about hearing over and over again about how fireworks scare their dogs , I don’t care !

I'd happily tolerate dogs for a few hours on a dozen or so days in the year if they would all just shut up and go away the rest of the time.

HeddaGarbled · 01/01/2026 01:00

Fireworks that make a nice shoozy noise. Let’s compromise on that.

MaloryJones · 01/01/2026 01:02

Frogbear · 31/12/2025 21:48

Ah yes, you’re right. While we’re at it, let’s cancel birthdays too, aging happens regardless, after all. No cake, no candles, just a quiet acknowledgment that time remains undefeated.

So from next year, we’ll all sit in silence at midnight, nod solemnly at the clock instead.

Jeez, what a miserable existence.

I agree with You

These types of posts and posters are really quite Puritan in their outlook

Nichebitch · 01/01/2026 01:05

I absolutely hate them. I’m autistic and I can deal with the ones I know are coming - kind of the main ones in town square - but the random f*ckikg ones popping out from everywhere are a nightmare. Also tacky as hell!

Aur0raAustralis · 01/01/2026 01:07

My council has both. Fireworks at 7:45 and midnight, then drone shows at 9 and 11. Fireworks aren't allowed except at official displays though.

When I come to power I will outlaw dog and cat ownership.

Hallywally · 01/01/2026 01:13

I do think fireworks should only be sold for official displays- with a licence, but that’s more from a safety perspective than a noise perspective (as annoying as they are).

tripleginandtonic · 01/01/2026 01:19

Because drone displays are sterile compared to fireworks which have the smell sound sight and smoke

So they’ll just roam the streets in giant feral gangs, setting off their own fireworks?

HoppityBun · 01/01/2026 01:40

Silent fireworks would be ok

LadyWiddiothethird · 01/01/2026 00:41

That’s an illogical and bad humoured response to someone’s expression of happiness and good wishes. Neither post will make any difference to whether or not there are firework displays in the future nor to the noise that they make.

Frogbear · 01/01/2026 09:09

LadyWiddiothethird · 01/01/2026 00:41

Yes, I’m so selfish to have looked out my window and watching BBC 1 at midnight.

I’ve got something else to add…I had a glass of real champagne at the same time, whilst my children were sleeping upstairs! 😱

Honestly, get a grip. The nastiness on this thread towards those who enjoy fireworks has been surreal and really unnecessary.

Lovelynames123 · 01/01/2026 09:14

Kittkats · 31/12/2025 21:41

Because the owners expect them to be and reassure excessively to the point it reinforces that there is something terrifying they need protecting from?
I’ve had 8 dogs and 12 cats.
5 cats and 3 dogs were scared on first encounter. Within a year, all chose to watch and enjoy.

I agree, I'm looking after xh's dog and he isn't bothered - when he was a puppy xh let off fireworks in the garden and ever since the dog either watches them or doesn't even react.

Disturbia81 · 01/01/2026 09:32

The answer is silent fireworks
