Peanut butter questions

TheTecknician · 31/12/2025 20:19

I've never tasted PB so please bear with me. What sort of a peanuty taste does it have? Is it anything like the shelled peanuts that squirrels and monkeys like or more like KP salted or dry roasted peanuts? Also, what is the butter element of PB ? Is it actual butter blended with peanuts or is PB essentially pureed peanuts?

Thankyou.

PB is literally blended peanuts, you can make your own by putting peanuts in a blender. Unsurprisingly it tastes exactly like whole peanuts

EleanorReally · 31/12/2025 20:31

if you buy the expensive nature brands they just taste of nuts

CalzoneOnLegs · 31/12/2025 20:31

good peanut ‘butter’ is simply 100% peanuts ground up, it’s quite oily, this is the oil released from the nuts when being ground up. Some peanut ‘butters’ contain sugar salt and other ingredients to help it emulsify. It doesn’t contain any dairy at all.
dry roasted peanuts are lovely and savoury and are whole peanuts roasted with spices and salts so they don’t taste like peanut butter.
I like 100% peanut butter but i grind a bit of salt on it.
so if you have 100% peanut ‘butter’ it is essentially, puréed peanuts, and it’s delicious

It's blended peanuts.

WhamBamThankU · 31/12/2025 20:34

It’s lovely, but quite claggy in texture so you don’t need lots of it. I love a slice of rubbish bread toasted with a thin layer of peanut butter and some raspberry jam on!

TheTecknician · 31/12/2025 20:47

Thankyou all. I did suspect the 'butter' angle was something of a falsehood. My sister used to like Sun Pat PB; not sure if it was the crunchy or smooth variety. Both equally calorific !

I actually intensely dislike raw monkey nut style peanuts but love peanut butter. I think they taste very different.

Sminty2 · 31/12/2025 20:52

There is also Dark Roasted PB, where unsurprisingly, the peanuts are roasted until darkly coloured before grinding into PB. Smooth or Crunchy, it’s very addictive.

Like any nut, they benefit from roasting to get the flavour enhanced, Pip and Nut brand do an extra dark roast peanut butter it’s really nice

I should have mentioned that to OP they are roasted first

@Sminty2 sorry didn’t read your post, agreed 👍

TheTecknician · 31/12/2025 20:54

I'm not a huge fan of ordinary salted peanuts but I do like the dry roasted and salt and vinegar ones. So on that basis I might quite like PB.

@TheTecknician forget SunPat it’s not a good product, lots of better PB’s available these days, even Lidl and Aldi do a pure version, just nuts and nothing else, it’s become a popular product in recent years, and has improved for the consumer

InfoSecInTheCity · 31/12/2025 20:57

Pip n Nut crunchy peanut butter is my favourite and I love peanut butter. It’s got decent chunks of peanuts in and a bit of salt but that’s it, no added palm oil or any other excess ingredients.

Peanut butter is creamy and really sticks to your mouth and teeth, others have done a better job than I can on describing the taste but I I just wanted to chip in and say give it a try, but if you do then choose one where the ingredients list doesn’t include loads of extras and store it upside down for a day then tip it up and give it a good stir. It helps to make sure it’s well mixed.

HouseAshamed · 31/12/2025 20:57

They vary depending on the brand. It tastes of roasted nuts but the texture is different. I usually get crunchy but always one made of only peanuts.

I like the Pip'n'Nut one and Meridien, but will buy the Lidl one as it's much cheaper.

Myblueclematis · 31/12/2025 21:00

I always buy the 100% peanuts with nothing else added. Currently using Aldi's PB which is very nice. I usually put a big dollop of it in a smoothie.

HouseAshamed · 31/12/2025 21:01

I use it as I would butter or hummus.

23Shadows · 31/12/2025 21:04

Whole Earth PB is very nice. Not the cheapest but worth the money in my opinion.

TheTecknician · 31/12/2025 21:10

I'm surprised Sun Pat is still about; it was 40-50 years ago when we had it at home!

Someone needs to invent Pringles Butter and Mini Cheddars Butter.

Um just eat some and find out for yourself???

soupyspoon · 31/12/2025 21:14

I love all peanut butter, cheap ones, pricey ones, pure ones, adulterated ones. They all have their place.

I dont find the 'pure' ones to be any less sweet than the adulterated ones for some reason, not sure why.

I cook with it a lot.

Nucleus · 31/12/2025 21:29

Food of the Gods is what peanut butter is. A moment of Heaven on Earth in each mouthful. Utter perfection, especially on simple white toast. Generously applied, none of this you don't need much nonsense. I may or may not have been known to just scoop straight from the tub bypassing the application to toast stage.

DeanStockwell · 31/12/2025 21:34

I love PB I buy it and make my own , I also make my own cashew butter too , it's addictive!

It is very thick and will coat your mouth, its easer to spread when it slightly warm so put a few spoonfuls in a small bowl and nuke for 10 seconds or stand it in some hot water.

HouseAshamed · 31/12/2025 21:36

@soupyspoon , I cook with it a lot. Tell me more, please.

Cakes, sauces, dips

So rendered down with water or more oil, with coconut cream with chilli and garlic, poured over salad
Mixed with tahini to make it more nutty and less sweet
Swirled into brownie mixes
Dollopped into a curry or dhal

soupyspoon · 31/12/2025 21:43

And I commit the most heinous of crimes which is that if I have it on toast I have it with butter underneath and jam on top. Same applies to a cracker
