Has anyone got a pepper mill they actually like?

After a while they all seem to dull or put out huge lumps of pepper. I’ve been using the small jars with a grinder top but I’d really like a nice one that I’d be happy to have on the worktop. Any suggestions?

Le Creuset here, love them.

I also have a Peugeot one.
Plastic mills shed microplastics onto your food, go for all metal or metal and wood.

@captainoctopus that's good to know! Our Cole and Mason one has lasted 33 years so far. Hopefully it'll keep going!

The landlord left her Le Cruset ones which are great.

Also a lesson I have learnt is not to use them over hot pans, moisture gets in and they clog.

Mix56 · 30/12/2025 21:41

@Feelinguselesssigh.ooooooh they are lovely.

I have Kuhn Rikon grinders, very easy to use, very easy to refill.

I love my Skeppshult (and can use it as a weapon if a burglar breaks in). Spendy but very, very solid.

The Flo is gorgeous.

I have just bought a Peugeot set from John Lewis which are currently on sale. They look very good quality so I’m hoping they function well for many years to come. They are replacing le cruset ones which are rubbish, despite being expensive. Both the salt and pepper hardly comes out of either mill so I wouldn’t waste your money on this brand.

I bought my husband a pair of these for a 22nd wedding anniversary present. Bought a carbon one for pepper and copper for salt. Expensive but worth every penny. They were quite a bit cheaper buying via Amazon.

We have the Le Cruset ones and they are excellent

Oxo!! I have 6!!

FruitWordSalad · 30/12/2025 23:34

Another vote for Le Creuset here.

Wallywobbles · 30/12/2025 23:35

IKEA are the only ones I’ve had that actually work.

I love mine! Sleek, dies the job. Simple push down from the top (one handed) rather than twisting. Bought them at the shop that has replaced Homebase ,(The Range).

The Mannkitchen Pepper Cannon. It’s ludicrously expensive but it’s genuinely excellent. I was sceptical when we were given it as a gift and now it’s one of my favourite things in the kitchen

Bought a brilliant Peugeot one in Switzerland about 10 years ago which is still going strong, despite being dropped and knocked.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 31/12/2025 09:10

A top tip I got when I bought my David Mellor ones - Sea salt is an often too soft for powerful grinders and clogs them up. Use rock salt instead.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 31/12/2025 09:52

I did a quick check and my large pepper grinder is a Peugeot. Probably explains why it has lasted so long. A similar model is still available but at utterly stupid prices. Apparently a lifetime guarantee.

Tootyfilou · 31/12/2025 11:42

God, the number of things I have bought from recommendations on MN!
Am such a 🐑
That said, the Peugeot salt and pepper mills look fabulous and just what has been missing from my life.

WolfFoxHare · 31/12/2025 11:45

We have quite a nice Cole & Mason set, though they’re only small. I specifically wanted a matching set with a pepper grinder and a salt shaker (not a grinder) and that was surprisingly difficult to find!

I'm curious about the Peugeot mills. Are they actually made in a Peugeot factory or is it just their branding?

ImWearingPantaloons · 31/12/2025 13:29

I have one from ikea given to me as a house warming gift over 20 years ago. Just plain glass on the bottom and a black top. I’m sure ikea still sell them.

They originated from the same family company. They made pepper mills and other steel based items before they made cars. They are different subsidiaries now.
