Has anyone got a pepper mill they actually like?

After a while they all seem to dull or put out huge lumps of pepper. I’ve been using the small jars with a grinder top but I’d really like a nice one that I’d be happy to have on the worktop. Any suggestions?

Peugeot all the way here. Once I tried a Peugeot, I gradually replaced all of my Mason & Cole ones (that I used to think were the bees' knees!)

My opinion on Le Creuset is that they make superb cast iron cookware that is eternal and bombproof, but everything else in their range is a bit fur-coat-and-no-knickers.

TragicMuse · 30/12/2025 12:48

Mine is a Zwilling. It’s adjustable for grind-fineness. I’ve had it for at least 10 years, probably more like 15, and it’s still as good as it was when new. The top fits without a little screw-on nut to lose.

It’s brilliant. It will seem madly expensive for what it is but it lasts and I would buy another if it finally broke. No sign of that so far!

I have Cole and Mason Derwent and they are brilliant.

Like @littleredpiano we got these a few Christmas's ago, and love them. We use a LOT of pepper.

I got a Peugeot one for less than £20 in Tk Maxx.

Have you adjusted the wheel at the bottom when it starts milling bigger lumps of pepper? Mine was doing that too, but I just tightened it and it’s back to very fine ground pepper.

Cranarc · 30/12/2025 14:08

My Peugeot electric one is very good. Had it a long time.

DW bought this for me this from a commercial kitchen supplies shop over 30 years ago. It still works brilliantly (and ensures a workout at every mealtime 🤣)

Oo, I know this. Weirdly it's by Peugeot, got the tip from on of those 'Chefs insist on these items...blah' style articles but it does seem very hard wearing. Cannot say the same for the recommended garlic press though.

I got one of these for Christmas last year and I am so disappointed with it. It just doesn’t seem to grind! Do you have any tips?

FastFood · 30/12/2025 14:25

Got a Le Creuset set for years now, very happy with it

BauhausOfEliott · 30/12/2025 14:26

Joseph Joseph no-spill salt and pepper mills are my favourites.

Nincompoo · 30/12/2025 14:28

We’ve got these and they’ve worked really well for years. Added bonus is that the jars can go in the dishwasher.

We got DH a Peugeot last year; we all love it!

Loosen the top bit

VisitingInkMonitor · 30/12/2025 14:38

I have a Cole and Mason wooden one that I was given as a wedding present 25 years ago. Still as good now as it was then.

gillybombilly · 30/12/2025 14:38

I bought these just before Christmas (reduced now).

You can adjust the size of the grains - just press the top to use (and they light up also, so you can see what you’re putting on your food).

They each have a cover on the base, so you need to remove them before use (as we found out) 😀

I’m really happy with them.

I have Kuhn Rikon grinders, I like that ratchet action and the easy fill door so that you don't have to take the whole thing apart to fill it, cheap and cheerful

Didntask · 30/12/2025 16:07

The Ikea IHÄRDIG mills are the best ever. Also the ugliest though 😅

MayaPinion · 30/12/2025 16:39

I have the Le Crueset ones and they are beautiful and functional. Very happy to recommend.

ProfessorIDareSay · 30/12/2025 16:46

I got a rechargeable electric Cuisinart one last year after seeing it linked on one of the Christmas bargain threads. DH had always turned his nose up at electric ones but now loves it.

(The rechargeable mini blender I got at the same time is also in almost daily use; it’s so handy!)

Sadly can’t see either of them on the website now so can’t post links.

DBD1975 · 30/12/2025 17:01

Absolutely, can't remember where I got it from, might have been Amazon but it is a round ball with two spring loaded prongs on the top which you click together, it is brilliant.

DBD1975 · 30/12/2025 17:03

Further to my previous post found it on Amazon Chefnpepper ball £24.99.

millymollyminging · 30/12/2025 17:17

I inherited the OXO pepper and salt grinders when my DSis died, they are brilliant. They are about a tenner each.
