Has anyone got a pepper mill they actually like?

After a while they all seem to dull or put out huge lumps of pepper. I’ve been using the small jars with a grinder top but I’d really like a nice one that I’d be happy to have on the worktop. Any suggestions?

Might already have been said, but I have one from IKEA which is the best I’ve had. Glass I think (see through anyway). And cheap - about £5.

Yes. Peugeot pepper mills are brilliant. I like our transparent one because you can see when it needs refilling:

https://uk.peugeot-saveurs.com/en/vittel-transparent-manual-pepper-mill-23-cm.html

but they do loads of others

Great brand and very reliable. I prefer a manual pepper mill though so have never bought or gifted one of the electric ones so can't testify to them.

Vittel

The Vittel 23 cm manual pepper mill has a pure and slender profile. Chrome accents enhance the transparency of the mill.

The only one that has consistently been good for me is the little one I took from my parents' house to uni over 35 years ago! It lives in the kitchen, all the ones we've had in the dining room have been rubbish!

https://millstonemills.com/product-category/products/mills-grinders/chess-piece-mills/ we've had a a set of chess piece ones for 20 years now and they're still as good as the day we bought them. Expensive layout but worth every penny as they last a lifetime.

Oo, I know this. Weirdly it's by Peugeot, got the tip from on of those 'Chefs insist on these items...blah' style articles but it does seem very hard wearing. Cannot say the same for the recommended garlic press though.

Nothing weird about it. Peugeot are well know fir their salt and pepper grinders. Have been for msny years.

CosyMintFish · 30/12/2025 17:49

I have a le creuset one. It is lovely

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 30/12/2025 17:51

We’ve got an electric grinder with salt one end and pepper the other. Had it a few years and it’s great. Sits in a rechargeable base on the counter.

Girlwithapple · 30/12/2025 17:58

We've had the Le Cruset set for a number of years now and have been really pleased. We actually got them from the Le Cruset outlet so got a really good saving on them.

I have Kuhn Rikon grinders, I like that ratchet action and the easy fill door so that you don't have to take the whole thing apart to fill it, cheap and cheerful

We have these and agree with you . Great to use whilst cooking as well .

CultureAlienationBoredomandDespair · 30/12/2025 18:33

Is it worth getting a salt grinder too? We have a salt pig with maldon salt that we use for most things and table salt for salting water.

Ours is fab. It's a Zassenhaus and we got it from a German department store years ago. They still make them... but they are scary expensive! Ours is 25y old and still in perfect working order. We'd probably buy another if it ever breaks, and we've the matching nutmeg grinder too.

We treated ourselves to the salt and pepper Le Creuset duo from John Lewis in the sale £49, as our present to each other for Christmas (I know what has life come to!) My logic was if they are rubbish will send them back for that price but I’m really pleased. They are really nice to hold, good quality, smooth and work without me having to put too much pressure to use. I’m usually one to opt for a bargain but was sick of the other ones breaking. I can see these standing the test of time. They make me smile and I like the smoothness. Simple things eh!

And Le Creuset have a lifetime guarantee.

Peugeot seems to be coming out on top. Le Cruset is beautiful though.

Yes it’s £40 per mill though. The OXO one is just as good, if less attractive, and is also adjustable for grind size… and £10

nightcap · 30/12/2025 19:34

We have this one and love it. Wooden so looks good, grinds well, only £15 and has a ceramic grinding thingy: www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/intressant-spice-mill-acacia-50301897/

I bought an electric one from Lakeland and it's really good. Been going strong for 3 years now 👌

I have a wooden Cole & Mason tall grinder. It will be 15 years old in February (house warming gift in 2011) its used daily and still works great.
This looks like the 2025 version.

I have one of them too, and it still works well. It was a wedding present... we have been married for 52 years .

ProseccoPie · 30/12/2025 20:08

I’ve had the Alessi tall wooden grinder for 25 years. It’s as good as new, definitely recommend
