Is Mumsnet the last living breathing message forum?

Just that really - I just realised I’ve been reading the hilarious and shocking posts here for nearly 20 years, but it’s also the ONLY message forum that I still use/read. Are there even any others still going?! Used to be a message forum on every website, it seemed. Now… just mumsnet and gransnet?! Or are there fitness forums, knitting, gardening etc elsewhere? (FB groups don’t count, I mean the classic message board like this one.)

Also, I’d love to know if anyone has been on here longer?! Anyway, ❤️ mumsnet.

Reddit? Netmums? Loads of forums about DHs various table top hobbies

Magnesiummaggie · 29/12/2025 18:14

Reddit? That’s still going strong.

Tattle

DullAndUnconvincing · 29/12/2025 18:16

Snow Heads! The people on that forum are brilliant

SerendipityJane · 29/12/2025 18:18

I've been on USENET since the mid 80s.

It's so old it's never mentioned in any laws about "social media". (It's also decentralised, so can't be easily taken down).

NNTP - it's where it's at 😎

PickAChew · 29/12/2025 18:18

Still lots of little independent hobby based forums about.

ShoesSnooze · 29/12/2025 18:22

Just curious, does anyone use a DIY forum that they would recommend?

doeecertge · 29/12/2025 18:24

Well as others have said Tattle is huge. You can’t even join it anymore.

Most forums I used back in the day might still be around but probably barely used.

Not regularly, but Screwfix, DIYnot and sometimes pistonheads.

iPreferBooks · 29/12/2025 18:28

The Student Room

The horse & hound forum seems fairly active.

One of the other forums that used to be busy and popular gradually dwindled due to Facebook and then closed permanently during the pandemic.

I hate FB groups.

DogsAndFilms · 29/12/2025 18:29

It’s a bit niche, but I still spend tons of time on the Forteana (formerly Fortean Times) forum and have done since I was a teenager (pushing 40 now).

Ravelry, for yarn crafts. It’s immense

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 29/12/2025 18:35

I dabble on Quora (although that is rife with romance scammers, but if you find the right threads it's quite entertaining) and the Fortean Forum which, while it's chiefly for paranormal and the unexplained, also has threads for general chat.

tumbletoast · 29/12/2025 18:37

Some of the bigger cancer and bereavement charities (e.g. Macmillan, Breast Cancer Now, Sue Ryder) have message board forums, but that's obviously not a hobby. They're quieter than MN too.

Clockyclockz · 29/12/2025 18:38

I use Reddit more than MNs now.

I think it’s clear that many MNs users have been here a very long time, there isn’t anything wrong with that as such but some of the thread responses are very narrow & a lot of references are from before I was born.

Doesn’t Reddit heavily censor GC views as wrong-think?

Belladog1 · 29/12/2025 18:38

I used to post prolifically on Digital Spy. But a few years ago they removed the General Discussion sub forum .... and it kinda died

blankcanvas3 · 29/12/2025 18:39

Reddit and Tattle are huge. There are hundreds of them - just a lot of them might be a little bit niche! Pistonheads for cars etc. DH is on a forum that has been going about 20 years, and all of the same people from 20 years ago are still on it, barely any new members because it’s so niche and you wouldn’t be able to find it unless you knew about it. I think there’s probs about 500/600 members

Yes, I got banned for hate speech for saying that banning men women’s sports made it fairer for women and girls. Literally, that’s all I said.

I don’t see how that’s relevant but it would depend on the sub you’re on - if you’re on the subreddit for Trans people obvs you’re going to get censored.
