We get Sainsbo. Every year l viw to change it because every year the Xmas food delivery has half of the items not available.

Whereas Dss gets Waitrose. They got it all.

Oh is that right?

Isn’t that only for the entertainment orders? I ordered beef and turkey for collection today and the cut off for amendment was the 15th I think.

I picked up today at 5 and the shop was really quiet.

petitpasta · 23/12/2025 21:46

Waitrose orders are picked in store so same risks as the other supermarkets. Ocado and Morrisons run from the same depots so, in theory, stock control should be better as no shoppers also picking from the same stock. .

However, Ocado substitute fairly regularly in my experience and don't price match if the substitute is more expensive like Tesco and Sainsbury's do. Hence my £12 raspberries which were a substitute for standard £3 ones yesterday went back to the depot. I'm not sure what was worth twelve quid - for that price I'd want them to make the pavlova they're going in...🤣

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 23/12/2025 21:47

Ocado is what you need

I dunno, it's always a risk isn't it? I gave up on it a few years ago as I always ended up going to the shops anyway due to the number of subs, and the shops near me always have what I need last minute.

Springbaby2023 · 23/12/2025 21:50

We had Tesco on Sunday and was terrible. 10 things missing including our Christmas dinner meat. Terrible dates. The delivery guy said he couldn’t process refunds. All round bad experience - Ocado all the way in future.

Greenpeanutsnail · 23/12/2025 21:07

I had everything in my Tesco order. I have an (unproven) theory that booking earlier in the day increases your chances of success.

Tesco came to me at 11pm last night, delighted it was all present and correct, and that I could get a slot at all. My usual (Sainsbury’s) was booked solid.

Rubyupbeat · 23/12/2025 21:56

I got my xmas sainsburys delivery this evening, I got every thing, thank goodness.

Fbfbfvfvv · 23/12/2025 21:59

We had Asda - it was an early morning slot as I thought like pps, surely they stock overnight so it should all be there. I was wrong. I had 10 substitutions, items for Christmas Dinner that expire before Christmas day (today and tomorrow). Items that were unsealed and off, missing item that I was charged for. Also had a rude delivery driver.
I didn’t notice the short dates and unsealed fresh stuff until the driver had left. I tried to get a refund for the unusable items online and the refund was declined!! So we are out of pocket and had to go to another supermarket to get replacements. Needless to say, I won’t be using Asda ever again.

intrepidpanda · 23/12/2025 22:01

Are you doing a normal order or a festive order?
Is DSS doing a normal order or a festive order?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/12/2025 22:02

Both festive.

I booked an early delivery slot incase I had to go out and get stuff. The only Christmas item sub I got was pigs in blankets. They were subbed for mini chorizo in blankets and out of date tomorrow cant be frozen. Got the money refunded for them. Cooked them tonight they were actually quite nice so I’ve kept some to heat up on Christmas Day.

The other non Christmas item they gave me no alternative for was a loaf of bread! Yes apparently Morrisons had zero bread in the whole store. Even the driver said aw there’s no way they didn’t have an alternative. Went to a little co op nearby and picked some up. I had a lot of substitutes for my more regular shopping and items that were just wrong. Gave me pack of 4 bagels but I had ordered 6 bagel thins. Gave me wrong type of drink too but was noted as being correct. Last yr was better.

howtoparent · 23/12/2025 22:03

a late order from tescos. Had a few subs and a few not available items. My red cabbage was substituted with red cabbage with port and my red cabbage with port was marked unavailable and not subbed! Made me laugh

DoggyDilemma25 · 23/12/2025 22:05

I’ve noticed if you amend your Sainsbury’s order it makes you remove anything that is now out of stock from your basket. But Ocado seem to save stuff for you as long as you don’t remove from your basket and try and put it back in (if it’s since gone out of stock) Ocado delivered today everything I wanted. Christmas slot booked weeks ago.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 23/12/2025 22:08

We just had our Ocado shop delivered, only 2 missing items and that was the sausages for pigs in blankets. Not sure I can face going out to get some.

I’m really pleased for you! My order was actually a click and collect- also couldn’t get an early order for delivery!

Frumpyandfrustrated · 23/12/2025 22:11

Sainsburys this morning was all fine. 3 substitutions, but all sensible (swapped our fair trade caster sugar for regular caster sugar, Christmas smarties instead of regular and own brand ginger ale instead of Canada dry (not wild about that one)). Possibly luck of the store or timing?

suki1964 · 23/12/2025 22:11

Whilst I can understand, that for busy families with a bunch of kids, parents to care for and work and everything , a delivery is useful, but I would never trust a delivery, esp for Christmas or any other big celebration

I will always want to pick my veg, because I never know what veg I need to buy until I see what meat Im buying

There is very little I buy week in and out other then juice and milk

I popped out this morning at 7am and got the "Christmas shop ' before I headed to work . Was great, the shops were pretty empty, the shelves full, everything I wanted was available Done and dusted and home again within the hour

If you are constantly getting subs that dont work, why do you carry on ordering?

Tillow4ever · 23/12/2025 22:13

We’ve used Tesco for years now as they’ve never let us down at Christmas. We do get some subs, but generally nothing major and if it wasn’t in the store to pick, I wouldn’t have been able to get it in store myself either.

Redwinedaze · 23/12/2025 22:15

Waitrose temp online picker here. It’s from the shop floor. However you’re right the early mornings deliveries are best, stock is filled at 22.00 and 01.00 (in our store) from the lorry’s then the pickers swoop before the store opens, delivery vans start stacking the pickers crates at about 6am ish with all the new stock so fairly rare for items to not be available and if that’s the case, the best subs are available.

In our store I can say the pickers try the best as if it’s their own shop, reach to the back for the longest dates, check for damage etc and if not on the shelf a little device says if there are any in the stockrooms, above the shelves so that item is deferred until the end do they can go a hunting for it. It’s also timed, the pickers have fairly strict times to pick and can get kicked back to shelf stacking if too slow.

Once the store is open it’s open season between picks and shoppers.

Egglio · 23/12/2025 22:33

My Sainsbury's order came today and they had everything except the cat's turkey mousse. He will be so sad on Christmas day.

Greenpeanutsnail · 23/12/2025 21:07

I think you need to choose a delivery slot so that the picking is done after the store has been restocked, so maybe picked 0800-1000. It's always a risk, supermarkets, their distribution centres and direct suppliers work on a "just in time" basis, they are also trying to balance supply against customer demand. They don't want pissed off customers, but on the other hand don't want loads of date limited/seasonal goods on the shelves later today. Personally I wouldn't be relying on getting something "mission critical" like a turkey delivered today.

StuffingMyNuts · 24/12/2025 10:03

Tescos had one sub that we didn’t want so DH had to do a trip to get a better beef joint along with two items that were out of stock with no sub. Overall can’t complain as with their Xmas festive food to order at least I knew that the turkey was guaranteed to arrive so will do that again next year.

Crunchymum · 23/12/2025 20:22

My Sainsburys is coming tomorrow.

To be honest I already have everything for dinner barring the veg, but I did pop another small turkey in my basket today as I'll roast it for sandwiches. Tomorrow I am expecting all the soft drinks, crisps and nibbles, salad stuff, dips and veg and ham though so we'll see what appears.

Shopping due anytime now. Only sub was mint matchsticks (for orange) so I don't have to go out.

BearSoFair · 24/12/2025 10:26

Sainsburys did well for us this year, everything except minced garlic and roasted peppers, neither of which were 'must haves' just part of the normal shop. All Christmas essentials delivered with dates beyond the 25th, I was very pleasantly surprised!

Agreed. My slots are always 8-10. I ask buy non-perishables in the months leading up to Christmas. It means I’m not panicking about stock, I can spread the cost and can take advantage of special offers as and when they pop up. I appreciate it’s not practical for everyone though.
