Do you dream of being hospitalised?

I just read some research that said many women dream of being hospitalised with something relatively minor just for a few days. They see it as a way of being able to stay in bed and be looked after instead of running round after everyone else. And I thought it was only me! (Please bear in mind that not everyone can arrange a couple of days away).

No, that’s really weird. I’m not in a one sided relationship where I do everything though and if I want to have a nap I have a nap. Being in hospital is fucking horrendous.

I now have a job that requires travel, but before that 100% this was a regular fantasy. Something bad enough to keep me in bed and with lots of sympathy, not bad enough to involve much pain 🫠

CandyCaneKisses · 17/12/2025 15:57

No, I think that’s very strange. Hospitals are not a relaxing place to be.

Toomanysofttoys · 17/12/2025 15:57

Yes. I've got to admit that during work stress weeks I've thought.. hmmmmm if I could press pause right now. Maybe a broken foot perhaps means I can sit and watch shit tv for hours.
I'm sure the reality of it would be awful tho and I'd hate it really.
Hospitals tho... no thanks

I was one of those women, at times and now (alas) am off to have a longish enforced hospital stay, thanks cancer, and feel shit about it (of course). Funny, I walked past a group of mums at the school gate this week saying just that, and noticed the feeling of being on the other side of the fence so to speak.

TokyoSushi · 17/12/2025 15:59

Hospital, no, but something where I had to be on strict bed rest, just for few days, maybe...

Littlebuddh · 17/12/2025 16:00

No.

Duvetdayforme · 17/12/2025 16:00

I do remember feeling like this when I was unhappily married.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 17/12/2025 16:00

No. I’ve been in hospital several times and it’s misery. Hot, airless and noisy.

But it's not just about relationships, is it? I'm scheduled for a minor op in the new year, and I'll get two weeks off work and be taking it easy at home. It will be nice to not have to juggle everything for once.

Moonlightfrog · 17/12/2025 16:02

It’s pretty rare to get more than one night in hospital these days, even after major surgery I was kicked out within 24 hours. I did get a few nights when I had my appendix removed but I barely slept due to pain and the noise on the ward. Being a single parent to 2 disabled (now adult) dc I kind of looked forward to a hospital stay but it’s not as relaxing as you think. A couple nights in a hotel with room service would be much nicer 😉

Petrine · 17/12/2025 16:02

I can only assume that you don't mean you'd like to be admitted to an NHS hospital?

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/12/2025 16:02

I used to enjoy it when I had a baby. In those days (youngest is 29) you stayed in for a day or so post birth. It was the only time I ever got to spend with the baby without the other kids barging in and out (I had five kids in seven years, so lots of toddlers around). It also gave the now-XH a chance to find out just how 'relaxing' it was , being at home with small children.

Completely agree!

caringcarer · 17/12/2025 16:02

Being in hospital would be a nightmare for me. I hate the way they have lights on all night so I can't sleep. They wake you up far too early too. The food is gross. Why on earth would anyone want to be in hospital unless really ill and getting an operation or treatment.

Prelim · 17/12/2025 16:03

No, hospitals are boring! I think anyone (man or woman) who has a stressful job (at home or in the workplace) would love a couple of days off from it all.

dryshampooer · 17/12/2025 16:03

Yes! When Dd2 was born, she had to spend a week in ICU and I was in an attached ward. It was bliss. Drinking tea and eating toast. Reading my book. Watching TV. Having a nap. Laughing with my ward-mates as we attached ourselves to the medieval milking machine. Genuinely some of the happiest memories of my lifetime. Maybe I was on some good medication?!

WhatDoRacoonsSay · 17/12/2025 16:04

No, I have a chronic illness and it's shit, and sometimes frightening.

mynameiscalypso · 17/12/2025 16:04

For me, when I started think this about work stress, I knew it was a sign that I was approaching burnout and that something needed to change.

User415373 · 17/12/2025 16:04

I felt like this when I was a teacher. I would hope to have a minor car accident that would injure me enough to put me in hospital for a week or so, and without a laptop so they couldn't ask me to send in planning and drop the marking off at my house. So fucked up.
I quit teaching.

ATadSurprised · 17/12/2025 16:04

Oh god yes! I seriously considered having a third child when DC2 was small because the birth was so fast the consultant said if I had another I'd be hospitalised 2 weeks before my due date. Imagine if (imaginary) DC3 came 2 weeks late - that would have been 4 weeks of blissful rest. Then common sense would hit and I would realise that afterwards would be even worse 😂Didn't stop me dreaming though!

BeeHive909 · 17/12/2025 16:04

Those that dream about hospitals clearly haven’t been in an nhs hospital. I’ve been hospitalised atleast 3 times this year and it’s traumatic I wouldn’t dream about it no chance .

Isthisforevernow · 17/12/2025 16:04

The one stay I had in hospital, 3 nights, was the worst 3 nights of my life. Noisy, hot, uncomfortable beds, no privacy, crap food, blocked toilet… no thank you.

A lovely hotel, maybe. But I cannot imagine ever wanting to be in a hospital again.

crazycrofter · 17/12/2025 16:05

I remember thinking it on two different occasions in relation to wanting a bit of a break from work. The first time, my daughter was promptly hospitalised with appendicitis. Whilst this was initially stressful, once she was operated on it did turn out to be a bit of a break for me as I stayed in hospital with her (it also coincided with us moving house so I really did need work to let up!).

The second time I wasn't hospitalised but I did develop an enormous cyst which needed to be removed and I had a couple of days off work. That was more of a pain as I had to go back to get it dressed by the nurse every day for about 2-3 weeks and then at less regular intervals.

I think what these examples indicate is I find it really difficult to ever take a day off work!

noidea69 · 17/12/2025 16:05

People who wish this have never had a stay in hospital.
