I’ll be getting the last bits and pieces on Monday. Will probably go at around lunchtime in the hope that the early morning rush will have died down. I already have most of our food - just need to make sure we have important things like cat food and coffee!

We never have turkey; not something either of us grew up with, so no particular Christmas associations. We’re having individual beef wellingtons, with roast potatoes and parsnips, sprouts with bacon and (possibly) Yorkshire puddings. Dessert is non-negotiable as far as the DC are concerned: sticky toffee pudding, with home-made vanilla ice-cream.

It’s just the four of us this year, no family/visitors, so I’m looking forward to slobbing around in my pyjamas all day.

I have a food shop arriving in the next hour or so with all the veg and stuff with a decent shelf life (cheese etc). Will go tomorrow or Monday to get stuff I want eyes on - mainly meat. Probably to Morrisons because out local one seems to be consistently quieter than the alternatives. Anything they don’t have I can choose between Tesco, Asda, Aldi and Lidl within 5 mins or Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and M&S 15 mins away. I’m confident I’ll be able to find everything.

dontcallmelen · 20/12/2025 16:54

Was in M&S about an hour ago fairly quiet, apparently was manic this morning
Turkey, Gammon pigs in blankets will be picked up from the butchers on Christmas Eve morning, potatoes & fresh veg/fruit anything else I’ve forgotten I will get Tuesday.
Dh doing beer run at some point over the next couple of days have wine/spirits & mixers so nearly all done catering for eight Christmas Day which is manageable.
out for lunch tomorrow with some friends we won’t see over the Christmas period it’s my birthday Monday going over to dd’s for dinner as I refuse to go out & have set meal Chris dinner it’s bad enough having a birthday this time of the year without having to eat Turkey twice.
would very much like to try alternative Christmas lunch food but the rest of the family would implode.

BestIsWest · 20/12/2025 17:01

I’m off to Llandeilo on Monday to collect the turkey, sausages, bacon and ham then I need to do the fruit and veg shop. DC are coming home for Christmas supposedly without partners. One partner is in the NHS and has volunteered to work all over the holidays and the other is going to her family but I wouldn’t be surprised if if she turns up here so I’ve got a Salmon wellington on standby as she’s pescatarian.
Our dessert is always Nigella's pavlova with fresh fruit with the exception of DS who insists that it’s not Christmas without Vienetta.

Spandauer · 20/12/2025 17:12

First year in a while where I don't have to play "Fridge Tetris" (great description @Saucery!) No US visitors this year... so we're all going to DB's for Christmas Day. Downside is no leftovers for Boxing Day 😭

cardibach · 20/12/2025 17:16

I’m very trad with Christmas, with the exception of sprouts which I loathe. Mackerel pate to start, full Turkey dinner with pigs in blankets and stuffing as well as many veg and proper gravy, Christmas pudding, cheese and biscuits. I make an alternative pud for DD who doesn’t like the Christmas one - cinnamon and orange cheesecake this year. It takes hours to eat with lots of talking between courses ( or intercourse as my neighbours used to call that 😂).

PandoraSocks · 20/12/2025 17:24

@BIWI I am definitely going to try the individual beef Wellingtons recipe you posted on another thread. Maybe for New Year's Day.

All your Christmas food plans sound lovely. Traditional turkey this year (from Field and Flower, delivered Tuesday I hope). I could do without turkey tbh, but it was DH's turn to choose. Pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, roast carrots and roast parsnips. Delia's red cabbage and sprouts with pancetta and chestnuts. Lots of wine! I love Christmas.

PickAChew · 20/12/2025 17:51

Our markses was tolerable just after 9, this morning. Occasional gridlock, not helped by everything having been moved around.

Waitrose are bring a turkey crown for us on Monday. Salmon has become a Christmas eve tradition for us. Lots of pig in blankets. And stuffing. And DH and I will have sprouts because we both love them.

And parsnips for me only. I didn't bother, one year, and it didn't taste Christmassy enough.

That cheesecake sounds delicious!

LittleBowSheep · 20/12/2025 18:06

Mr & Mrs Grinch here I'm afraid. We both hate Christmas. I used to do the full monty when my parents were alive as they loved it.

Now I try my hardest to ignore it. No decorations, tree, lights, but we do have Christmas dinner just because we like a roast. Apart from that we just buy lots of junk food, peanuts, crisps etc and I do indulge in a bottle of Baileys.

Evenstar · 20/12/2025 18:12

Tesco delivery arriving this evening, have been to Sainsbury’s twice this week and picking up our turkey crown from Booths on Monday so really hoping that it is it now! Second fridge and freezer in the garage are starting to fill up. Trying to make this a really special Christmas due to the bad news about DH’s health, first Christmas in a long time that all the adult DC are here for Christmas Day

I’ll let you know…it’s a new recipe I haven’t trialled! I like to live on the edge.

BIossomtoes · 20/12/2025 18:24

Oh Booths ❤️ I have a bad case of supermarket envy @Evenstar. Most of our Christmas dinner has come from Cook because I’m a lazy cow. I’m girding my loins and preparing to cook for 16 on the 27th. We’ve only got 11 chairs 😱 Good thing we know our neighbours well enough to borrow some!

dontcallmelen · 20/12/2025 18:33

Yes do Cardi I love cheesecake it sounds delicious I’m hoovering between making sticky toffee pudding or possibly a lemon & raspberry cheesecake.
Evenstar much love & that you have a lovely Christmas Day 💕am well jel you have a Booths.
eveyones menus sound very delicious.

BIWI · 20/12/2025 18:39

It’s tough having to think about Christmas/happy families in the face of ill health and bad news, @Evenstar Flowers

Can I ask where the individual beef wellington recipe is please?

Notonthestairs · 20/12/2025 19:06

We will have a traditional Christmas lunch, largely because we have guests and they prefer things that way. Not that traditional though because apparently we must have cauliflower cheese and yorkies.

Sometime in the future I’ll change things up with a no-cook-just-cheese-and-wine Christmas but not this year.

@Evenstaras BIWI says it’s tough juggling Christmas/NY while absorbing difficult news. I hope you both have a lovely time with all of kids at home.

Not sure I’ve ever been in a Booths!

Evenstar · 20/12/2025 19:10

Booths is amazing, but strictly for a special treat!

We have a tabletop full of chocolate, stollen and lebkuchen. I'm also going to make individual apple/sultana cakes from an old friend's recipe - she has been gone a while, but her cake lives on.

I’ve just had a nosey on their website. I need to move 🏠

😂 @Notonthestairs

PickAChew · 20/12/2025 19:42

Our nearest Booths closed down, this year. It was over an hour away! Our nearest Waitrose is 45 minutes on some rather gnarly roads but at least they deliver. The Hexham drivers cover most of the north east and Cumbria on their rounds.

DuncinToffee · 20/12/2025 19:48

We've been to Booths on holiday, we have a Waitrose but I hardly ever go there. I don't really get the buzz
