Could someone explain something to me, please?

Labour councils ask for permission to postpone elections due to restructuring etc. = Starmer banning elections.

Tory councils ask for permission to postpone elections due to restructuring etc. does not = Badenoch banning elections.

Badenoch is not in power.

However, I agree with the vague thrust of your puzzlement, as when Rishi Sunak was PM, there was a faint undercurrent in the MSM of "but what can he do ?"

By the same token, it's safe to ignore anything Badenoch announces as she isn't in a position to enact it.

No, it's hyperbole (although MN really isn't the place to try and discuss this).

And it's hard to think of a person in Britain who would be lower than Boris Johnson on my list of "Who to take advice from" - whether it's the Brexit he made a complete Horlicks of, or parenting.

All he is doing (to the extent that it may be coordinated) is take the pressure off Reform and Farage as Brexit fall guy.

I look forward to seeing his relationship columns done without any hints of irony.

Ah! Tory councils asking for permission to postpone elections due to restructuring etc. = Starmer banning elections. Got it! 👍

There is a petition on it.

Talking about petitions, it makes me laugh when our friends ask how long we would give a future Reform government.....

I have noticed a lot of post now starting with 'I am not a Reform voter but'

I don’t see how it’s less incitement to violence than the ‘burn down the hotels’ tweet to be honest. Yes, he’ll say it was hyperbole, or figurative language or whatever but he knows damn well most of the people reading it won’t get that. He’s a disgusting excuse for a person. He’s managed to disappoint me even for the level of absolute disdain in which I already held him. Quite impressive in its way…

"I used to be a werewolf, but I'm all right noooowwww!"

As Nigel Fartage might say.

You are not allowed to call him Fartage, Placemats. It is apparently sneering. Or childish. Or something. Which of course, according to his fans, is a far bigger crime than him being a steaming bigot.

PandoraSocks · 20/12/2025 14:03

I just popped into our local M&S for a few Christmassy things, thinking I might miss the mad rush that will be next week.

It was heaving!

Yet certain elements of the press are suggesting everyone will be having stale crusts for Christmas dinner. Of course some people won't be able to afford much, but the likes of the Daily Mail don't normally give a shiny shite about them.

I wasn't referring to the leader of a minor parliamentary party though. Nigel is a common first name. Fartage is made up.

I'm venturing out Monday morning. Waitrose. We have 3 Co-ops, one Aldi and a Waitrose. Aldi shop was done today for Christmas Eve buffet.

DuncinToffee · 20/12/2025 14:13

We are going to MIL and be doing most of the food shopping on Christmas Eve, We don't do a tradional British meal so will be more than ok.

My local Sainsbury's was heaving at 7.30am yesterday.

What do you have instead?

placemats · 20/12/2025 14:17

No turkey here but we do have stuffing, roasties, parsnips and potatoes and dinner isn't complete without Yorkshire puddings and lashings of gravy (and alcohol). Vegan roast and for me chipolatas wrapped in smokey bacon and prunes.

Broccoli is the green thing.

We are doing what is known in Holland as a 'gourmet' A teppanyaki/raclette.

A selection of meat, fish and veg directly cooked on a grill plate with lots of breads and dips on the side.

We do have pigs in blankets, stuffing balls and cranberry sauce.

MIL does a ham for boxing day

Because context is everything.

At what point is describing a violent event understood as an incitement to that event ?

It pains me to move towards BoJos side of the aisle but I personally do not read the text as urging others to actually carry them out. And I would say the same in a jury room.

You could say it's not a very well thought out or conveyed point of view, but no more.

(With the usual caveat I can only speak to facts in view).

Also the more hysterical Brexiteers become, the more they demonstrate what a shit idea it was.

I reckon I went to the same one today . Just a tinier bit busier than normal at 8.45 this morning and surprisingly well stocked. Haven't got the turkey yet, mind!

I heard the checkout staff talking about how busy it was at 7am yesterday and that it had calmed down. Weird.

BestIsWest · 20/12/2025 15:16

Tesco and Aldi fairly quiet at lunchtime today. Sprouts and parsnips were 5p a bag in Aldi.
DH volunteers in a charity shop on an out of town shopping place with a big Tesco and reckoned it was manic yesterday, took him ages to get out of the car park. But no problem parking today at all.

Well, from me they would get the same 5 minutes that the current government got from the Reform fans on here... Sauce, goose, gander.

pointythings · 20/12/2025 15:58

Am doing the Christmas food shop in two stages - stage one done today, which was freezer stuff, alcohol, general basics like cat food. Stage two will be done Monday that will be all the veg and fresh ingredients. We don't do traditional either in that we don't do turkey - I'm making some marinaded grilled chicken skewers, there will be pigs in blankets, some grilled halloumi. We do also have sprouts (sauteed with bacon and garlic), broccoli, Yorkshires and roasties.

Saucery · 20/12/2025 16:00

Waitrose is delivering Christmas on Tuesday. They’ve never let me down yet, so the only challenge is Fridge Tetris.
