Is anybody interested in a biohacking thread?

I have recently become interested in biohacking, the idea that you can reverse aging (kind of) to live a longer, healthier life. I have watched the Blue Zones documentary and am following Bryan Johnson on Instagram (he's a bit extreme, but I do find him fascinating).

Is anybody else here interested in biohacking and want to talk about it?

I’m in!

Difference for me is that I can’t take hrt snd and am on tamoxifen following breast cancer. Im also hypothyroid (tho apparently Brian is too)

However I pushed for bone check and despite being osteoponenic I feel quite confident that I can reverse it via diet and exercise after listening to an episode of the menopause and cancer podcast. Basically vit d, calcium and jump 50 times most days.

I was merrily listening to Michael Mosely around the time of my diagnosis. Finding out about all the longevity stuff in the cancer world, alongside the things that help menopause that aren’t hrt (most cancer treatments cause menopause side effects) got me into being interested in the bigger conversation.

The Red light therapy stuff is fascinating, especially bees and macular degeneration.

I don’t do Zoe but have listened to most of the podcasts and eat the way they suggest as much as possible. Drs Kitchen is also good - I found him years ago tho.

Blue zones is different to Bryan. I prefer blue zones.

I’m actively resistance training and have to have carbs but I do time it around work outs. Found Stacy Sims helpful there. Really helps fatigue.

Ive also been growing broccoli sprouts!

This is pretty much what my meno consultant told me (and not to drink alcohol)

Most folks could bio hack themselves in a very basic form to ensure you have the best chance of a healthier longer life. Stopping smoking, vaping, drugs, alcohol and eating a balanced diet with good sleep routine will change your life in unimaginable ways.

This...

One of the changes I’ve made is sitting immediately I get up with a coffee in the bright morning light - outside if possible, inside the door with it open if it’s raining. Has transformed my circadian rhythm and sleep. I used to sleep 6 hrs, now getting over 7 almost every day (last night was 8!).

It would be even better to get out for a walk for 15 minutes but I’m too lazy to get dressed 😂

My take away way from the doc was pretty straight forward tbh. If it grows in the ground, eat it freely but with extra attention on beans and pulses for protein and fibre. Aim for all colours of the rainbow with a decent focus on purple and blue. Touch the soil and grow food, even if it’s only salad leaves. Walk barefoot on the grass. Excercise in a way that doesn’t feel like a chore and keep your legs ( thighs) strong and healthy. Eat live fermented foods. Don’t eat upf. Live your life with purpose and intent, volunteer, help your community and create connections that benefit other
people as well yourself.

I have to sayi agree. I got an allotment two years ago and a greenhouse at home. Is been incredibly satisfying and in summer and autumn I am drowning in organic fruit and veg. I bake my own sourdough weekly and started it in lockdown, also make my own sauerkraut and kimchi. I eat lots of nuts.

A year ago I started volunteering in a non religious hub in my local church and for the last 4 years my sister and I have paid for, cooked and delivered Christmas dinners for our own community for the parents of fussy eaters, older People, shift workers, addicts, poor families etc. we don’t judge. Last year we fed 85 people. We fund raises all year around and also do Easter and free activities and meals for kids in school holidays. It gives me such a sense of satisfaction, I had no idea that serving your community in a completely altruistic way could be so rewarding. It’s definitely increased my overall happiness and life satisfaction after making all of these changes and I’m also definitely healthier now than I was. Mentally and physically.

One thing I do always find depressing is when people are snotty about life being "joyless" without alcohol and fags etc.

It's nice to hear someone affirm how joyful life can be in ways that aren't considered "cool".

Didn’t Bryan inject himself with his son’s blood plasma in his quest for youthfulness? I’ll be steering well clear of him thanks.

TBH I was expecting a discussion of inserting microchips and bionic eyes! What you’re describing is basic healthy living I’d have thought.

getting a dog that wouldn’t wee in the garden sorted this out for me; I now feel quite twitchy if I’ve not done my 15 min walk at 6 am!

Well, I had my bloods done and got the results yesterday and all is great, apart from a Vit D deficiency. I have just picked up a Vit D & Vit K spray, so I should be good now. As I eat a plant-based diet, I was a bit worried that I could be low in some vitamins, but no... all was perfect. Apart from the Vitamin D.

I feel vindicated. I had the same blood tests done 20 years ago when I was pregnant and before I become vegan and they were terrible: high cholesterol, low vitamin levels, slight anaemia... just goes to show. Maybe plant-based is the healthiest diet after all.

Was that b12 as well? I think I do have issues with absorbing that. I cut right back on meat and ate more vegan stuff and stopped taking any vitamins bar vit d and my levels just steadily dropped. I’d had some symptoms and they’d been testing me in the past - but I’d always taken b12 in a b complex. My levels were stable when I did.

Caffeine is terrible for you. Alcohol is terrible for you. Processed meat is terrible. To much salt is terrible. Any smoking you've ever done is/was terrible for you and some of that historical damage from smoking is completely irreversible.

That's the fab news we've just had from the hospital. DH 45, hasn't smoked for 20 years and leads a healthy life style with tons of exercise (for work) and alcohol for celebrations only and he's just had a stroke.

Still Stand by this.

I’ll add being active, getting sunlight, avoiding UPFs as much as possible, regular dentist hygiene visits, annual blood work, drinking plenty of water, taking a good multivitamin all make a huge difference.

Those who say smoking / alcohol bring you pleasure, please try a life without and see if abstaining actually gives you more pleasure…for longer.

Very Sorry to read this, I hope he makes a speedy recovery.

SombodyThatYouUsedToKnow · 04/07/2026 11:34

The Blue Zone phenomenon has been debunked, it’s mainly down to poor record keeping and pension fraud.

SpicyMargarita1 · 04/07/2026 12:41

Sorry to hear that @Laiste. Wishing your DH a speedy recovery.

He already had hypothyroidism and they tend to go hand in hand.
